Hi Guys

Reading what you ex BR blokes got up to on tax payers money, for the first time ever I am glad it was privatised. :rtfm: :threaten: :rtfm:

Never had anything like that in the NHS, well not at my level. However if I done a course or a similar with the RCN you knew if there was someone senior either presenting or on the same course by the stars outside the hotel. It was all for the benefit of the members. :secret:

To illustrate the sybaritic hedonism we had, the Derby School of Transports dining arrangements were that we all sat round large tables, but occasionally you be invited to sit at the Principals Table. The distinguishing feature was that the cheese boards on the peasants tables had cheddar, Caerphilly and Leicester, but the Principals Table also had a piece of DANISH BLUE!!! It seems that became the main preoccupation of everyone going there, with rants from the more socialist minded on class warfare, over the b***** cheese.

Comrade Northroader,

I am sure I have read similar accounts of situations like you mention and how to deal with the inequality of the distribution of cheeses at multi level functions in my little red book.

I think the conclusion was, too right, so the senior table should have Danish Blue. I bet the pinkos if they were invited to the top table wouldn't share their Danish Blue with their lower class comrades. All animals/railwaymen are equal just some are more equal than others.

Next thing you know the senior railwaymen will be seen eating cheese with humans.

Winter salad as dinner if you arrived on Sunday night. And the blonde-rinse serving ladies. All dressed in their blacks, lined up before the meal in seniority order. Quite Victorian. A nice lady called Madge was the breakfast server. None of our course was ever invited to the top table.

I did hear a tale of a lad on another course who’d left some change on the dressing-table of his room. The cleaner kindly scooped it up, put it somewhere safe, left him an explanatory note. He responded with thanks, but unwisely asked whether she had had any lately? Not a good move, and he was hauled up before Mr James, the barrister Principal. Was lucky to keep his job!

Everyone was allocated a napkin with a silver ring for the week. You had to get it from a pigeon hole before each meal, then fold and roll it up and replace it afterwards. After a dozen or so meals some of the napkins were getting decidedly manky.

Oh, and everybody had to stand when the Principal entered the dining room...

This is the official photograph of the Engineering Management Trainees' Diesel Traction Course, taken outside the School of Transport in July 1975. Weren't 70s fashions (and haircuts) wonderful?

My lasting memory of Derby was the selection of single malts, over 30, behind the bar. Fortunately one of the last times I was there was for Advanced Signalling Technology which lasted a total of 4 weeks, so we were able to sample them all during the late-night snooker sessions which usually got abandoned when Cell Block H came on the telly at about 4am.

Yes, that was later at the time when Charles Underhill - a distinguished railway modeller in his own right - was Principal.

Not front row centre; that's Denis Norden.

Just following today's flight from Exeter to Edinburgh (flightradar24.com) - currently taking a wide left hand turn over the sea off Leith, should have a great view of the Fourth Bridge from there.

Stu mate,

It is November you are going? A view through the clouds?

Anyhow they haven't built the fourth one yet they opened number three last year(?).
