RMweb Gold pheaton Posted March 24, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 24, 2014 The Yeoman O&K stuff is 45 mph, the ARC (later Hanson) stuff is 60, running as class 7 and class 6 respectively. The 59/1s are definitely 60 mph machines. If my memory serves, as built the Yeoman ones were lower but adding the yaw damper to the bogie allowed them to run at 60 mph. RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted April 2, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 2, 2014 59001 heads north through Three Bridges on 26th November 2012 59002 also at Three Bridges the following day. Presumably these are the service from Ardingly; the Crawley New Yard trains reverse just north of Three Bridges.

Steadfast
I thought I'd kick some life back into the thread since I've photographed a few 59s lately. 59104 roars past the site of Lacock Halt working 6Z75 Whatley Quarry - Oxford Banbury Road 14/4/14 59204 passes Great Cheverell working 6M20 Whatley - St Pancras Churchyard with a varied rake of hoppers 16/5/14 59004 leads 66129 past Great Cheverell working 6A17 Merehead - Acton. The rusty Bardon hoppers add some variety to the clean Mendip stock 16/5/14 59004 approaches Crofton working 6A17 Merehead - Acton with the same rusty set of Bardon hoppers as when it was seen three days previously on the same working 19/5/14 59104 passes Little Bedwyn working 6V18 Hither Green to Whatley, the River Dun on the left and the Kennet and Avon canal on the right 19/5/14 Compare this shot with one I found on Martin Loader's site http://www.hondawanderer.com/L583_Little_Bedwyn_1979.htm - how things change! Clashing colours as 59005 passes Bedwyn working 6Z21 Grain - Merehead 19/5/14 A couple of angles at the Churchyard in Great Bedwyn. These two trains tend to run very close together east of Woodborough, though lighting isn't ideal for eastbound trains mid afternoon. 59101 passes St Mary's Church, Great Bedwyn working 6L21 Whatley - Dagenham 19/5/14 59204 passes St Mary's Church, Great Bedwyn working 6A83 Avonmouth - West Drayton 19/5/14 59203 approaches the crossing at Crofton bottom lock while heading 6C76 Acton - Whatley 19/5/14 That day on the Berks and Hants was my first day of sunburn this year! jo
60091
I've been copying old slides onto computer so here are a few 59/2s from August 1996 With no chance of seeing 59s in the North East at that time, I had a trip down to South Yorkshire to photograph the area and in particular any 59s that turned up. The photos of Gascoigne Wood are particularly poignant with the site now completely levelled and only the two main running lines remaining. 59201 passing Knottingley Station 59206 at Hensall Station 59206 Gascoigne Wood 59201 and 206 at Gascoigne Wood 59201 with 58047 59205 arriving at Gascoigne Wood 59202 with 205 light engine 59205 with 60020 on tanks

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 18, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 18, 2014 Just found this thread. I was lucky enough toget a few cab rides on 59/2's at Ferrybridge and will try and dig out my photos. Jamie
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 18, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 18, 2014 The most obvious differences are with the first batch for Yeoman (59/0), which had two headlights in the centre of the front panels, whereas subsequent batches had WiPAC light clusters. There were other differences with fixtures and fittings, hence the sub-classes. IIRC the 59/2's were fitted with twin air pipes and thus could work passenger trains and had 75mph top speed. Steadfast
All three sublasses are twin piped, I believe it was the yaw dampers fitted to the bogies that allowed 75mph running. Here's some more GM super power, bringing us up to date. 59202 heads towards Bincknoll Lane, Wootton Bassett working 6C48 Appleford - Whatley 21/5/14 59201 passes Manningford Bruce working 6M20 Whatley - St Pancras Churchyard Sidings 19/6/14 59101 approaches the M4 motorway on the western edge of Swindon working 6C48 Appleford - Whatley 2/7/14 59005 and 59001 pass Wootton Rivers working 7A17 Merehead - Acton, running with a mix of IIAs, Yeoman JHAs and Bardon JGAs 3/7/14 59101 passes Bourton working 6C54 Oxford Banbury Road - Whatley, unusually running on a Saturday 5/7/14 59004 approaches Friday Street near Dauntsey working 6C48 Appleford - Whatley under a heavy sky on a muggy summer's day 16/7/14 jo
South of 1E
A rare service train working for 59204. The 59 rescued a failed 47807 at East Croydon on 230201's 1418 Brighton - Manchester. Believe she was swapped for a 47'8 at Reading. A hurried phot at Kenny O some 83 down.. NR http://www.leightonlogs.org

Peter Kazmierczak
Since the Whatley - Hamworthy stone trains stopped running two years ago, we don't get Cl.59s down in my neck of the woods anymore. In happier days we find the driver of 59104 checking the connections before easing onto a rake of empties at Hamworthy. 60091
The 59/2s did eventually reach the North East although I can't remember what the working was. 59201 at Pelaw Junction in August 1997.
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted July 20, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 20, 2014 (edited) They did Ferrybridge to Wardley for opencast coal then back to Drax to unload. I was on one working that broke down opposite Tyne yard with a stuck relay and we had to be towed down through Newcastle station, round the loop and back to Tyne Yard by a 60. They then sent another 59/2 light from Ferrybridge to tow the train (still empty) back to Ferrybridge and sent another empty train up to Wardley to pick up the coal. I've got some pics of the journey somewhere, including a shot from the 59 cab of the 60 towing us through Newcastle Central. bigdaveadams1
As a freight train driver who works mainly on 66s I love looking at the 59s and thinking what if. If my lot had bought 250 59s the world would be a better place! As for twin pipes, surely the 59/0s had main res pipes fitted to provide air pressure for the bottom doors? We run single piped trains at 75MPH so whether there's a main res or not is insignificant to train speed. Instead it is mainly brake force and RA that influence this.
ews60002
I see from wnxx.com that 59003 is to return to the U.K. What state is it in? Last I heard it wasn't on bogies and needed considerable work done to it. Mathew
Steadfast
Wasn't it on accommodation bogies whilst it was getting work done to its own (new wheelsets springs to mind...) NXEA!
It's operational, allegedly been sighted working since it was photted at Cottbus on accommodation bogies. Supposedly snapped up by GBRf in their never ending quest for traction.
ews60002
IF it has been snapped up by GBRf they the next thing we will hear is that the large amount of 58 stored in france will also be snapped up by GBRf too.
Penrhos1920
Alas no Bachmann 59 this year... ... I thought it was a racing certainty Ah but DJ Models have just announced a 59: 59002 ‘Yeoman Enterprise’ in Foster Yeoman Livery, 59103 ‘Village of Mells’ in ARC Mustard and Grey livery, 59204 ‘Vale of Glamorgan’ National Power Livery, 50206 ‘John F. Yeoman’ DBSchenker Livery. Why did a couple of 59s transfer to operating the Llanwern iron ore trains in July 1998? Does anyone have a complete list? So far I can only find evidence of 59004, 59103 & 59104 on the Llanwern trains. Edited July 28, 2014 by Penrhos1920
