They are the standard wheels which come with the crane it is a conversion of the Hornby steam crane.

The crane already has wheels fitted they are not very visible as there is a lot of heavy engineering on the bogies

I have been working on the crane again and on studying my reference photos for the crane I noted that the weight relieving bogies had angled lifting eyes mounted on the top so they could be lifted out of the way when the crane was in operation.

These are fairly obvious can't believe I didn't spot them before I was trying to work out how best to make them and realised that if I cut the end of a metal solder/Banbjo tag that I could then fold it at an angle and simply glue it to the top surface.

The photo below shows these in progress, cut of the large terminal connector section first (I used tags with a 3mm terminal hole). I drilled out the hole with a 2mm drill to increase the size slightly.

To ensure they were all of identical length I then threaded all the flat tabs onto a 2mm drill and holding them together as one block filed it so the ends level.

The unmodified tags are top left with the completed tags bottom right.

I have added the same detail to the jib runner truck

I have also added coupling hooks to the outside ends of the bogies; I really should have spent more time planning the level of work I was going to put into the project it seems to keep increasing. I am however enjoying the project but could have made it easier to plan it first.

Bit more of an update have been working on a few items; have removed the moulded hand wheels from the side of the main crane chassis to be replaced with etched items once painted.

Needs a bit more cleaning up and will be ready for painting, the photos really show every little flaw, probably a good way of checking that the preparation is complete

Optical car is now basically complete

Work on Chassis is as finished as far as I can go.

I have added the end details along with wire handrails and other small detailing parts.

This has now all been painted black, there are a few minor imperfections in the body but I don’t think the original was 100% perfect.

I need to fill in the circular windows in the side and apply the transfers, probably needs a bit of light weathering as well but I will leave this for a while yet

Latest project arrived in post yesterday

Silverfox kit for RTC Laboratory 9 “Hydra”

Comes in a very nice little box and is a plastic body with replacement sides for one bogie with the hydraulic drive detail added.

Quality is very impressive the only issue is that if using a Hornby Chassis then the chassis is slightly wider than the space between the body sides.

I have filed down the side of the chassis slightly using sandpaper mounted on a piece of MDF so that the body is not so tight.

The photo below shows the kit with a Hornby 101 donor chassis (purchased from ebay)

Have completed the Optical Car and applied the Transfers.

The vehicle number and text “Optical Car” were re-printed on white transfer media using a black background as the ones I purchased had the body side text too large.

I have added two more sidings and a head shunt to store the departmental stock on my layout. I have also started to add a few buildings adjacent to this area based on the actual buildings at the Railway Technical Centre in Derby  these are not exact copies but more to give a feel for the facility.

The large office block at the back is yet to built and is currently a card model with a printed overlay to get a feel for the final layuot.

I have also decided to create a new thread for the Hornby Crane conversion which can now be found at.

Found this interesting website on the structure guaging train

http://www.rail.co.uk/rail-news/2012/unique-train-that-can-only-operate-in-darkness/

If you check out the photos at the bottom if the page there are a couple of photos showing the inside of the vehicle itself, not something which needs modelling but interesting in any case

An interesting article but:

"It is always powered by two locomotives"

Not quite. When RTOV 9708 was converted in 2008/9 it was dedicated to the SGT set, negating the need for a loco at each end.

This SGT is now retired as of mid-2013 and replaced by a much less interesting looking mk2 pair.

Cheers,

Mick

I have now built a copy of the gauging rig which was used at the RTC to calibrate the optical car this is made of brass square section, 2mm square for the frame and 1mm square for the members.

I was going to hinge the side sections as per the original but it got rather fiddly and decided that as I would probably never actually close them that I may as well model them in the open position.

The base will be hidden by ballast and I need to add the limited clearance signs and line side telephone.

Targets were added to the fixed frame in later years but don’t appear to be thee in the early 90’s unless anyone know differently

Few photos below before and after painting, looks a bit rough before it was painted.
