A few photos of the canals in Braunston, Northants - the busy heart of the Waterways.

A narrowboat emerging from the western portal of BraunstonTunnel. Opened in 1796 and 2,049 yds (1,874 mtrs) long.

A rare quiet moment - Lock 5 looking towards Lock 4.

The Bottom Lock with a pair of narrowboats beginning the ascent to Braunston Tunnel. Braunston dry dock is the large building on the left and the well known "Boat Shop" forms part of the cluster of buildings on the right.

Braunston Marina. Plenty of narrowboats for the weekend and there are at least as many again behind me in the other part of the Marina.

(Taken from the Oxford Canal) the magnificent pair of cast iron bridges, manufactured by the Horsley Ironworks of Tipton and dating from 1830, which span the unique triangular junction of the Oxford Canal and the Grand Union Canal. There is a third bridge to the same design at the entrance to Braunston Marina. All three were erected when the Oxford Canal was straightened/shortened. Apparently Marc Brunel (father of IK) was involved in the Oxford Canal improvements.

This mornings dog walk, looking north from Durlston Country Park, Swanage, across Poole Bay, Ballard Down to the left, and the 'Island' in the distance to the right - not bad for a 'phone pic.

post-7336-0-44071300-1431545040.jpg

Meanwhile looking south, the Swanage lifeboat at full speed on a training run, and a massive container ship near the horizon, makes it's way from Southampton. Durlston ( Anvil Point ) lighthouse, like all lighthouses, is automatic, the old lighthouse keeper cottages are now holiday lets.

I was awakened in the garden chair after a good lunch by a passing mass of white cloud and was thinking it is only 4 weeks off the longest day then it's all downhill again!.... We ain't had any decent weather yet, so it was one of those days when you know you live in the British Isles....!

Stoppin-in weather yesterday...Sunshine with showers!!!

Here is the same view in spring, a few days ago:

attachicon.gifarley_may_2015_email.jpg

The previous views were taken from Arley footbridge over the Severn, built in 1972. Such a view wasn't possible 3 years earlier when I took this picture in 1969.

post-1103-0-24394900-1432161048.jpg

I remember crossing with my bike. The ferry was attached to a rope across the river, and moved sideways using the rudder against the current. The ferry closed when the footbridge opened.

Cracking pics Martin, haven't been to Arley for years, not since before my dear old mum passed away, she used to like going there for a  sunday (pub) lunch, and a strole along the riverbank afterwards. :sungum:

I walked over Clee Hill yesterday. Not as clear as recent days, but not such a cold wind either.

Make your own chocolate box. The Severn valley in springtime. Bewdley's rooftops can be glimpsed among the green in the middle distance. The camera position was SO 77784, 73789 looking north.

Well sailing is my outdoor Hobby and I particularly like the Horning sailing club 3 Rivers Race, 100 -150 boats sailing Around 55 miles of the Norfolk Broads under 4 Bridges in 12ft to 40ft boats, and you have 24 hours to do it.

I didn't compete myself this year as I was one of the course officials, but here are a huge bunch of this years photos, scoot down past the Ugly Mugs of all those people I know and err ....

and the Boats sailing Around the beautiful broads are later on.

A boat trip out to the Farne Islands on Saturday, the perfect time of year to see the nesting seabirds...

Never been to the Farnes. But always loved Lundy at this time of year. All the same breads plus deer seals, and dolfins

Hi, everyone. I was out cycling a couple of weeks ago, and took this photo' of the lovely church at  Brantingham, East Yorks. There is quite a crack in part of the tower, and I hope that everything is O.K. with the tower.
