Today's replacements are from Norton Bridge on the WCML between Stafford and Crewe.

They were all taken in May 76 by Dad.

David

To me the first two images look like those of a model railway.🙂

Good afternoon, David. That is a great set of ‘old’ photo’s of Thorrington and Great Bentley on the Great Eastern line from Colchester to Walton on the Naze and Clacton. In C2481, at Great Bentley, with 309604 leading a Walton and Clacton to Liverpool St. express train in October, 1975, it would appear to either be raining lightly, or has just finished raining, only spray from some rain can be seen towards the rear of the train.

That is a delightful set of mixed photo’s which captures the 60’s and 70’s BR railway so perfectly. In J5779, at Culgaith, with two class 40’s on a down freight train in August, 1977, it was not everyday you came across two 40’s on a train so it is excellent that your Dad was able to capture that sight for posterity.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

It may sound odd but I remember taking the photo of the 309 at Great Bentley.  It was a day of short sharp showers.  When I got out of the car it was sunny and dry.  By the time I had taken the photo I was distinctly wet.

It's funny how one can remember specific incidents which happened 47 years ago!

By the way I also remember taking the February 1975 photos at Thorrington and Great Bentley.  At home in Basildon it was cold and wet so I nearly didn't go out.  When I got to the railway it was just dull, wet underfoot and cold.

  Quite possibly.

The paddle steamer could also be Sandown, withdrawn in 1966.

The other ferry could also be Brading or Southsea,

Indeed. I guessed Ryde and Shanklin because we holidayed on the Island in that same month and I remember those two clearly.

Good afternoon, David. That is a great set of ‘old’ photo’s of Sowerby Bridge on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway line, from September, 1967. It is fascinating to see you in J1141, complete with camera. And in J1146, and J1149, with Stanier 8f, 48111, on a down goods train, you have a couple of shots of a typical steam hauled goods train near the end of steam, and the 8f is quite grimy and rusty.

The photo’s of the line from Newsham to Bates pit in Blyth are most interesting, and it’s sad that it is now gone. The last two photo’s, J11876, and J11878, of 56127, on a coal train to Bates loader, in April, 1991, also show the typical coal train which is no longer to be seen.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Depressing, isn't it?

All that rust!    🤣

Tell me about it, a few years back David posted a picture on here in the early 80s with the J72 on grosmont crossing  I'm stood on the crossing as a young box lad about to do the gates.

Seems like yesterday and now thoughts of retirement are increasingly entering my mind!

A cl.26 added enough to get a fully laden train around the curve and up the bank at Holytown. Not just the ore trains either but also the loaded rakes of HAA. Initially any trains needing it were banked from the rear but after some derailments (caused by the banker not reacting quickly enough to the train), it was decided to put the loco on the front. In later days, a single class 60 was used.

In C8963/8967, the loaded Ravenscraig trains would be on the left going away from the camera i.e. heading south. The sharp curve and incline start just under the road bridge visible at the rear of the photos.

These pics are taken at the South end of Mossend North yard, like this video (and many others):

Good evening, David. That is a most impressive set of ‘old’ photo’s of  Mossend North on the 14th August, 1987. In the first photo’, with 26006, on a down freight, you have captured a superb three quarter portrait shot of the locomotive.
The latest Carlisle photo’s are as excellent as always, and in J10954, with 90024, on a Carlisle to Birmingham train and 87007, on an up light engine movement, in May, 1990, it’s a well composed shot of the two locomotives side by side.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Some interesting pictures today David

Just looking at the class 505 Altrincham unit there doesn't appear to be any multiple working jumpers or sockets on the front only a RCH lighting cable . Did these sets work in multiple?

In the last picture you have managed your to capture a very early montego Efi these are super rare now and had a digital talking dash in them

A quick search reveals it only possibly lasted another year as not taxed beyond Oct 1991

That didn't last long, can't imagine it rotted away in six years and engines in the 2.0 go on forever

Replacements for Manchester Oxford Road today.

The station was only a short walk from the University but film was expensive so I rarely took photos while I lived in Manchester.  Four of the photos date from those days.

The fifth photo dates from 1990, I can't remember why I was in Manchester that weekend.

Like the way the crewman is looking at the gubbins on the chassis of the 108 at Manchester
