Good evening, David. That’s an excellent selection of ‘old’ photo’s from Gonalston, on the Midland Railway line from Nottingham to Lincoln. In the last photo’, with 25248 on a down freight train in August, 1978, you have captured a great three quarter shot of the 25 hauling a typical train of 16 ton wagons.

The Northumberland photo’s of the ECML, and Linton, on the line from Butterwell Junction to Ashington are a most delightful set, and in the last photo’, of a class 37 on an up coal train from Longhirst drift loading site, in August, 1980, that is a scene typical of the time, with a well worn 37 hauling a train of mixed coal wagons.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Back to Morpeth today with a fairly random selection of photos, mainly of local trains (except the first one).

Good evening, David. That is a great set on new random photo’s. In C8938, at Prestonpans, with 26007, on a coal train from Bilston Glen to Cockenzie, on the 11th August, 1987, you have captured a superb three quarter front view of the engine, and you can see that one of the engine room windows may have a broken pane of glass.

The ‘old’ photo’s of Normanton on Soar are superb, and in J839, with class 45, D109, on the up Thames Clyde express, in March, 1967, it is indeed great to see it in the early form of BR blue with small yellow warning panels on the nose ends.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Those three Peak photos are sublime: so well framed and composed.

Is the early blue what some people refer to as Chromatic blue?

I have often thought it might be but I cannot be definite, especially knowing the variation in colour on old slides.

Best not mention the c word! The BSYP Peaks were repainted at Toton and a different process was used …. Which may have resulted in a tonal variation …. Or not! 😉

A few black and white photos of trains on LNWR lines this afternoon.

Carlisle Class 5 up ex pass Glasgow to St Pancras June 48 JVol7247

Nice photo but hardly a train on ex-LNW lines! Pedantically, Carlisle Citadel is not a pukka ex-LNW location, having been the property of  the Citadel Station Committee (LNW & Caledonian joint, the other five companies being tenants).

5678 on the goods is a bit of a surprise. These 5XPs were always used on goods trains from new, not just in their dying days, but these were normally express fitted and part fitted trains. A humble Class H is a bit of a come down. And it still has pre-war livery, domeless boiler and still with the split smokebox saddle.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of ‘old’ photo’s of Huddersfield in February, 1972. In C0851, with a two car class 101, on a Huddersfield to Sheffield via Penistone service, you have a typical smokey departure of the unit on the grey February day.
The photo’s of trains on ex-LNWR lines are truly superb, and in JVol2140, at Sandy, with a class G2a on a short goods train, c1949, you have a most atmospheric view of how many such short goods trains were in steam days.

I'll have to be honest.  I do know about the Citadel Station Committee but I couldn't think of anything else to use as a link for the photos!

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of the Severn Valley Railway from between 1972 and 1980. In the first photo’ at Bridgnorth, with Collett class 2251, 3205, in April, 1972, you have captured a superb three quarter portrait shot of the locomotive.

The ‘old’ photo’s of Norton Bridge on the WCML, between Stafford and Crewe, are superb, and capture so well how it was back in May, 1976. The last photo’ of 87019, on an up express passenger train shows yet another typical West Coast formation of stock with the Mkl BG leading, and the 87 has only one windscreen wiper.

The Switzerland photo’s are, as always, so delightful and full of atmosphere. In C14937, at Reichenau Tamins, with a Ge4/4ii, 621, on the Glacier Express, from Zermatt to Chur, on the 7th August, 1990, you have captured the train between all those trees, and with water on the foreground, it is a most beautiful photo’.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Here's something to make you think . In 1972 3205 was just 26 years old and 46521 was only 19 years old!
