Toton 20088 & ano down ballast Oct 77 C3604

David

The pair of 20s are hauling Iron ore hoppers, not ballast wagons. Although these types of wagons went in to alternative uses during the 1980s Iron ore or Sand was the usual use at this period.

Good evening, David. That’s a splendid set of photo’s of Cramlington and Morpeth. In C15545 (2), at Cramlington North, with a Class 142, “Skipper”, on an up service, on the 12th January, 1991, you have an excellent shot of the unit. They always looked good in the brown and cream livery.

The photo’s from the 1970’s at Cambridge and just south of Trumpington, are a superb selection. In the first photo’, at Cambridge, with 31239, running light engine, in September, 1976, you have taken a superb portrait shot of the 31, and the 31 is quite well weathered.

That’s a most impressive set of black and white photos at Grantham in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. In JVol5004, of J6, 64237, on an up goods train, c1950,  is a splendid shot, and the  Gresley third corridor carriage, on the left, has a piece of paper, on the quarter light of the second compartment, with a big X on it. I wonder if it was a reserved compartment?

Finally, the photo’s of the Grantham to Nottingham line are an excellent selection. J1488, at Aslockton, with a Class 114, on a Nottingham to Grantham service, in November, 1968, is a beautifully composed shot by your Dad. The unit has the DMBS still in green livery, with the DTCL in blue.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Good evening, David. That’s a most impressive set of photo’s of the Great Eastern Main LIne going towards Colchester. In C4862, at Marks Tey, with three permanent way machines, on the 2nd November, 1979, you have taken a most fascinating and well composed photo’.

The photo’s of Brighton, along with two at Sellafield, are an excellent and intriguing selection. In the first photo’ at Brighton, with the Jig Saw train, in August, 1954, that’s a fascinating photo’, and how delightful to see you and your Mum in that right hand ‘coach’.

That’s a superb and atmospheric set of photo’s of Oensingen in Switzerland, on the 11th August, 1988. In C10775, of OeBB Be2/4, 201, ex BLS, 721, you have taken a superb portrait shot of the electric single car unit, with the mountains in the background.

Finally, the photo’s of Horton in Ribblesdale and Long Preston, are a splendid selection. In the first photo’, at Long Preston, with BR Class 4, 4-6-0, 75019, on an up goods train, in September, 1966, your Dad has taken a superb shot of the train, and once again, near to the end of steam, the locomotive is covered in dirt and grime.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Hi David.  In J6638 the blue house set into the concrete retaining wall is the site of Magnus Volk's original workshop and power station.  The section of line immediately to the east of the Groyne, on which the cars are travelling, is actually on a steel viaduct which has become buried in shingle since this section of the line was built.  One wonders how much of it is left under the shingle!

Good evening, David. That’s a splendid set of photo’s of Didcot in May, 1979, including the Morris Dancers. In the last photo’, that’s a fantastic view of Wantage Tramway, 5, Shannon. And what a great sight the Morris Dancers make in C4537.

The photo’s from around Darlington North Road in 1975 and 1986, are an excellent selection. In the last photo’ of the goods station, on the 1st August, 1986, you have taken a superb shot of the building which would make an excellent model.

That’s a delightful set of photo’s of the London Tilbury and Southend line. In C1804, at West Horndon, with 302256 leading a down passenger train, in October, 1974, that’s a beautifully composed photo’ of two of the electric units going about their everyday work without fuss or applause.

Finally, the photo’s from around Newark are a superb selection. In that first photo’ at Newark South, of a class 47, on an up express passenger train, in January, 1970, despite the headcode difficulty, it’s a splendid photo’, and what a great plume of exhaust as the 47 powers it’s train past your vantage point.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

C3399 can only be one of two Deltics, either 55 004 or 55 016. Both were in traffic in July 1977. IMO, the plate isn't long enough for "QUEEN'S OWN HIGHLANDER" and the crest isn't round enough or big enough. I'm pretty certain that it's "GORDON HIGHLANDER".
