BEIJIAO - a large Chinese HO exhibition layout set in the 21st century

One extremely unusual piece of rolling stock I have always wanted to feature prominently at exhibitions has been the Bachmann 32 axle D38 transformer wagon ..................

                                                                                 th.jpg.2e115c140464307b62180e2c56e0a1db.jpg

But it's a big beast and has proved to be a bit of a nightmare keeping it on the track what with tight clearances etc.

In fact, despite various 'tweaks' it has usually failed the "100% reliability" test and has spent 99.9% of its time at exhibitions stuck in a fiddle yard road - or in its box!

So. I was amused to see that similar things happen on the real railway too - Slovenia yesterday!

Inspector: "You've derailed your transporter wagon!"

Driver: "No, its just resting"

I am lucky, in that my wife usually buys me railway stuff for Christmas. This year she asked me what I wanted and I pointed out a new book - volume 5 in a series called "LOCOMOTIVES OF CHINA".

And she got me a copy - in fact she got me TWO copies - one from her, and one from her son and his wife!!  In November she bought a copy on behalf of my son-in-law having totally forgotten that she had bought a copy of exactly the same book for her to give me on Xmas day back in June when I first mentioned it.

The publisher wouldn't take either back as both were over his 28 days returns policy and so one of the copies is up on ebay now if anyone is interested. Here is a screenshot from the publisher's website ....

Does anyone know what the "XK" stands for ?

I know (assume) that the X and the K will be the first letters (in PinYin) of the two syllables making up the Chinese name.

You want to check a copy of "Peter Clarke: Locomotives in China". Needless to say I can't find my copy at the moment...

Is it the Rivarossi?

Yes, it's the Rivarossi Italian version. No real conversion work done (yet?). Has just been repainted (by Peter Morgan) to hide the original livery and the wheels now red. Will get the buffer beams painted red too.

Found my copy, but it doesn't explain about the XK2 class. It talks about the Japanese scheme, and how some of the classes get the designations but not the XK's. All the XK classes ae 0-6-0 shunters so I guess it si something to do with their function rather than a patriotic statement...

Glad we're not the only ones accidentally double-buying books...

I think Slovenia Railways were incredibly lucky: 20m to the left and it would have gone in the drink!

At least one of the end cabs (left side in the photo) is in the water.

Branchlines has some suitable etched pushbikes. I have a few packs somewhere in store.
