Finally got my hands on her after two years of waiting two new locos in two weeks that have been preordered for ages out of the box cracking model although the water tender looks like it could be similar to the older Flying Scotsman on axle boxes don't look so detailed as the coal tender will post pics later

You might want to combine with the Hornby A4 thread.

Detail pics would be great, esp the Cab Roof - I would like to know if it is only REF models that have strange indentations just in board of the rain strips at the rear of the cab.

Water tender will likely be the old Flying Scotsman Tool, which is actually incorrect for the Water Tender as it is today. Southall built a new body for the water tender; the old one was converted from the original water/coal tender, with, I think the side corridor remaining, New body has a corridor running down the middle of the tender, and both ends of the body are all but identical, aside from filling positions on the roof. Don't quote me on this though.

I managed to get a few minutes with my double tendered Bittern and took a few snaps in case anyone is interested.

However I'm a bit disappointed really as I've noticed a few QC issues, and am in two minds whether to return it. In particular:

  • Front number plate has been stuck on by someone after a few pints.
  • Filler lid is also not straight.
  • Glue marks around number plate and to tender join.
  • Window to the rear of the coal tender looks odd.

Good work Sanda Kan!

I cannot vouch whether the water tender is a new moulding or not.  The rear axle is articulated, so I presume it dates back to the Scotsman model.

All buffers are sprung except the ones between the water tender and the original tender.

I'm out of the seven day return period, so I think I'm a bit stuck really. What do you guys think? To return, or not return. That is the question.

It's up to you, but if it runs well  - assuming you have purchased the model to run it - then I would suggest you stick with it. The minor detail errors are easy to correct. The window to the side corridor in the tender really was present, does the preserved loco have it 'chromed'? If not a little dab of paint sorts it out.

There are a dozen more aspects of the model which are in error, available to sort out if they bother you. The two that really get me are the flangeless wheelset in the Cartazzi truck, and the vast hole through what should be solid frames immediately in rear of the cylinders! Glaring, horrible defects! But all is forgiven for the generally very good representation of the difficult hand panel beaten streamlined casing: this and much else being very right makes it worthwhile correcting the various deficiencies.

If I receive mine in this condition it will be going straight back, after all it not as if they are giving them away at £150 rrp plus.

With regard to returns, if you bought over the net you now have 14 days to return an item in accordance with distance selling regs.

When you look at pictures of A4s in service you occasionally see wonky front numberplates and whistles- and as for the parabolic lining at the front, it was possible to look at an A4 head on and see two different radii.......

Seriously, the first bird strike in service often knocked the whistle off-straight and fitters feet then sometimes affected the numberplate when trying to straighten the whistle, not always corrected immediately if the loco was due back in service quickly or if just not noticed at the time.

Have you checked if the filler caps are actually glued in place- if a push fit then transit vibration might be enough to rotate them.

All the very best

Les

Have just received this loco from Richards Models in Bristol, very impressed at first glance and nice to see that the brunswick green is a better shade/match than other recently produced Hornby BR loco's.

Full marks to Richards Models who supplied this item at a very competitive price and were very friendly and courteous. My order arrived very well packaged.

Will definately use this shop again rather than the "box shifters" some of whom are now very short on customer service !!!!

I'd check with your retailer that they've got a replacement before sending it back. This model R3103 was apparently also seriously undersupplied by Sanda Kan to Hornby (shades of Exeter but not that bad) and is out of stock with many retailers. So if you really want one, you may have to live with the faults because you may not be able to get a replacement.

I've just got round to taking Bittern out of it's box. What gets me is why do Hornby keep using a Polystyrene box. I had an awful job getting the loco out. I Know some newer models now have a plastic casing which is a lot better. But surely Hornby could adapt this idea to hold train packs.

Kind of a strange thing to model as a prototype as it was realised very early on that it wasn't really an advantage to run the thing in this configuration, and so it didn't and doesn't any more.
