RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted March 28, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 28, 2017 For "completeness", here's the floor pan after another 700kg of concrete has been added on the top. Other jobs to do in the garden, but hopefully this is now ready for the observatory shed next week. Jeff
RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted March 28, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2017 This shed, Jeff is it going to be one of those roll-on, roll-off roof jobs?
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted March 28, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 28, 2017 This shed, Jeff is it going to be one of those roll-on, roll-off roof jobs? Hi Jonathan. Yes, it's exactly one of those. I could have bought a fibreglass dome design, but it looks silly in a "normal" garden and the thermodynamics of the wooden roll-off shed are better. So the telescope reaches thermal equilibrium quicker. Here's some pics. The first is the generic design, the second is from a previous installation by the company I'm using. My shed is similar to this, but the area holding the 'scope is 6' x 6'. Even a 10' x 8' arrangement is reasonably priced, but I wanted to use up as little gardening space as possible! The third pic is the beast that'll be housed in the shed. Mr Edwards proportional sketch.pdf Jeff
RMweb Gold PeterBB Posted March 28, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2017 Hi Jeff, That 'looks' impressive ... no pun originally intended. I'm sure we will see many excellent pictures on the lounge once it is use.

RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted March 31, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 31, 2017 Does the long dark-haired lady in the sketch come with the shed too? Afraid not! Update, 31st March. Here's a couple of pics showing the completed base. The brick layer is still to be completed and extended, but is a way of keeping soil used for climbing plants away from the rear of the shed. Peter Kazmierczak
Couldn't you "double-up" the shed, by having a garden railway terminating in there Jeff? Possibly O-gauge?
RMweb Gold Anotheran Posted March 31, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 31, 2017 (edited) So from the shed design that you posted earlier would I be correct in thinking that the roof will open up by sliding over the fence? I only joke because I'm very jealous. Edited March 31, 2017 by Anotheran

RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted March 31, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 31, 2017 Impressive brickwork - your apprenticeship on the stone walling has obviously paid dividends. And working in 12" to the foot scale has the advantage that the bricks are ready-made. No DAS in the garden for me!! Couldn't you "double-up" the shed, by having a garden railway terminating in there Jeff? Possibly O-gauge? To quote the title of Sir Tony Robinson's recent autobiography, I have "No Cunning Plan" for the shed... But if the telescope annoys me then there's always another use for the shed - though it is only 6' x 6'. Jeff

Peter Kazmierczak
What gauge are the shed runners I wonder? Anyway, onto more things of a higher plane........... My trusty "Filofax" says there's a Full Moon tonight, so this is the view through the trees opposite, from my front door at 9.55pm.
RMweb Premium Physicsman Posted April 12, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 12, 2017 Nice image, Peter. Good picture composition with trees framing the subject! Cloudy here tonight. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted June 10, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 10, 2017 It is Slaidburn's Steam Rally this weekend. It's a small gathering but has raised many thousands of pounds for local charities since it started. The weather has been atrocious today but my photos have turned out quite well for those of you who enjoy anything steam.
peach james
A pair of S type waggons, a couple of rollers (both A&P ?) a lovely looking Foster Compound Agri, and a 4 1/2" Burrell. Not a bad turnout for a horrible rainy day...we've been there, done that, gotten completely wet before. 2" scale engines don't want canopies, because all they do is make firing much harder. (and 4" is little better...). My Caribou (0-8-0 railway engine) is sitting outside, I put some 262 on threads earlier to seal them up (brass screws that hold the firedoor on). I might get steam up again later, I also worked on the blower valve.
RMweb Premium Jason T Posted June 12, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 12, 2017 Didn't really know where to post this as it doesn't really belong in the Mill or the Bacup thread so here is as good a place as any. Whilst sorting through some locos, I came across my Ivatt Class 4 Mogul which never got round to being weathered. Upon opening it up, I remembered why; one of the side windows had gone walkabout. So, as you do, I brought it downstairs and cut & filed up a replacement one. All good so far but then I noticed how bad the other glazing looks compared to the replacement, as can be seen in the below shot when compared to the cab front. So far, I have just replaced the cab windows as I am scared that if I do all of them in this loco, I will feel compelled to do it to all the others too. If only Shawplan did laser cut replacement windows for steam as well as diesel locos. Note: you just know I will end up doing them all at some point....

RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted August 21, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 21, 2017 There's so much smoke from all the wild fires todays spectacle proves to be interesting. peach james
Sorry, I was naughty and posted in the main thread- I knew Sasquatch was to the south of me, but I would have thought in the zone of totality. We got to 91% here to the north, it was dark for a summer day & cool. As I posted over there, it is awe inspiring that these events are literally once in a lifetime for any given area. & those are nice photos . I didn't bother at all, as I know there are far more $$ $$$ worth of cameras taking photos that will be on the internet than what I have. As I just explained to my wife, I need another hobby like I need a hole in my head ! James
