Jessy1692's bits & pieces- Coaching stock and wagon bashing stuff with the odd loco

Recommended Posts

Evening all, Happy New Year and all that! Not a lot been going on recently apart from stripping the 11 HEAs, some of them were in a real state so it's taken quite a while and I got a bit bored of them.

Anyway, I have got 10 good un's the 11th is a bit too far gone with very bent hopper sides. The 10 have had new buffers from Lanarkshire fitted and plastic coal loads which covers the mess of old glue and sponge that were in the hoppers originally. All primed up today between the rain and a coat of freight brown

In carriage news, my Dad is on with a dia 100 bar car and iv got a dia 76 cravens FO on the go so plenty to keep me going through Jan and Feb

Solebars were specified as blue for blue/grey livery though. That's not to say vehicles were always painted according to instructions, of course.

I've seen enough ex-works blue/grey Mark 1s over the years to know that the solebars were blue, and not only on Mark 1s either. Oddly enough, having glued the basic (and one side modified) bodyshell together just last night my next job will be gluing the solebars onto the Kirk Gresley Buffet Car kit I bought 43 years ago - it was 'now or never' for that particular round tuit! I've also chopped up some spare Lima Class 117 seat units to create the '2+1' seating, rather than try to saw and file the supplied seat strips into 24 separate (and square) seats 😕. It will be finished as W9135E which I saw many times at Reading in the early 1970s, and it will run with some resprayed Tri-ang/Hornby Mark 1s so the interior doesn't need to be exactly 'cutting-edge', just generally correct. The biggest challenge I think will be creating a removable roof, as gluing a model up solid is a no-go for me (goods vans excepted). I have some of those long Tri-ang coach roof bolts going spare, maybe...........

BTW, I have wondered where Hornby obtained their references for the shades of blue and grey they used on their Mark 1s........the livery diagram you linked to may provide the answer 🤔!

Evening all, the HEA's were numbered and coated last week and are now on the layout. I'll get some pics next

The Cravens FO is shuffling along, both sides on and a bit of filler applied at the ends where the sides were ever so slightly shorter than the mainline donor coach. The angle at the bottom over the solebars will have to stay, that's how they came to me and I didn't dare try re roll them to the correct curve as the sides were a bit battered and bruised.

Testing to see if this post comes out OK?

Got a new phone so hopefully whatever issues was going on with posting has now gone..

21ton hoppers now up at the layout after handrails, footsteps and fresh coal added. I really like these and now tempted to coal up and detail my empty couple to add to the rake. The HEA and HAA rakes are also still out on the tracks, going to have to store some soon.

I'll be back on the coaching stock again soon, a few more cut and shut/slightly converted mk1s to go into blue and grey.

Saturday saw the arrival of a couple of things for the projects pile from good old Ebay, a tatty Horby 60 007 body that should scrub up well with a few replacement bits which in turn may get re done as a coal sector one as an alternative to my Load Haul 60 007. Not my usual era but I do like a 60.

Another new arrival was an unexpected win of a Heljan Western. I stumbled across the listing, been stored non runner etc so put a speculative offer in and snapped it up on the reasonable counter offer. I couldn't help myself when it arrived to have a look inside and was a little worried when the body wouldn't lift away from the body until I realised it had a sound chip! Anyway half an hour at the layout got it moving and making a noise. I think it's quite an early model with an early chip too so doesn't sound the greatest so may flog it on and re invest into a new sound chip but that's a thought for another day once we have picked a Western to do, think itl end up maroon FYE.

After the Western revival early Saturday afternoon I gathered up a batch of coaches to bring back to go through the finishing shops and then set to building boplate E I picked up a few weeks back whilst watching footy, needless to say the kit building was more enjoyable than the Leeds result.

Today I set to on the coaches, some are having just a bit of filler added before painting and others are going through the paint shops. I just remembered to put the new hinges on the Cravens before I sprayed it with grey primer!

20230304_173425.jpg.b288f5fffcfc21944a326b90f3b798cb.jpg

The Thompson buffet is also here for finishing off, currently studying pics of roof vents, I'm trying to do 1706 and I think it has slightly different vents to 1705... bit frustrating as I was just going to copy Singnallar69's excellent modelling, still may do yet!20230305_183102.jpg.1078461bb27ef0f41447d83d4b6979e3.jpg

Anyway, more soon hopefully and more coaches and wagons to come.

Cheers

Evening all, paint shops have been going full tilt the last couple of weeks. Had to brush paint the 5 coaches as thr weather was a against me, many coats of blue and grey later and it's lining time!

1st up are the Thompson buffet 1706 and the Cravens FO lined out and some detail transfers applied. I'm waiting for the decal fix to go off fully before proceeding with the yellow and red stripes. Tonight's job was to get the bogie and chassis steps sorted and a coat of paint on. All being well will have these two sorted soon.

20230319_203040.jpg.c8f703ccae7dbf04bb61d091c75d3624.jpg

I do have an interior kit for the FO and I'll build an interior for the buffet but whether I do it now or later I'm not sure. I have an RBR, Fk and Doncaster SK ready for lining but probably only enough lining for maybe 2 of them...

Hopefully more soon

Evening all, I now have 3 of the coaches fully lined up and numbered and ready for a bit of final tinkering before varnishing, so we now have E1706E W3082 and E25457- this one is a Hachette cut and shut trial which has come out OK but Tri Ang cut and shuts seem a bit better to me. Once it's back on the chassis the sides do straighten up again.

20230321_233927.jpg.09ab4383c7d5f217ca38c0a1278f28c3.jpg

As I'm now out of lining again (I'm sure I had more!) I bobbed in to my Dads on the way home and picked up some bogies and Hachette glazing to paint up and also picked up the dia100 bar car to finish fettling. Tonight I added the new cantrails, door hinges and then the window frames so this one should be heading the paint shops shortly.

Latest updates, iv pretty much got the Tri ang cut and shut shut FK ready for varnish and the Dia 27 was converted from a dia 23 is also nearly there but have run out of buffet transfers.....

20230330_221817.jpg.9ed4287b4bc9f866dc0a36e5046e9c23.jpg

20230330_221828.jpg.449935dbbb8bd738adfecde6007412c1.jpg

The Dia 100 bar is having its blue coats applied, slightly worried on this one as I have a nasty feeling the masking tape may bring some of the paint off, not sure if the primer coat fully attached to the brass sides for some reason. Soon know for sure.

Hopefully have most of these ready to head to the layout soon.

Cheers

To my huge relief this morning the masking tape on the Bar car didn't cause any problems at all so iv spent the day on and off tidying up the paintwork and actually got it lined and numbered and door furniture stuck in.

20230401_221808.jpg.d7295d86eb5a988791363aa6f6e1a0f1.jpg20230401_222223.jpg.06057474db138acf722fd982521747fb.jpg

Just a couple of bits and bobs to finish then a light weathering job and varnish. Oh and some B4 bogies to build up once some 12mm wheels appear.

I'm a bit sick of white lining coaches now so hopefully back to a wagon project soon. I am pretty pleased with this latest batch of coaches, but I think I nearly have as many catering coaches as normal coaches now!

Cheers

As the family has left me dangerously unsupervised for a couple of days, I made the most of the peace last night to finish off and varnish the current crop of c9aches and the Boplate E. I got everything pretty much fettled by lunch time so left well alone till after tea and I rigged up a spray booth on the hob and leisurely worked my way through.

20230402_195558.jpg.be430e79deee2f9e23547dd8a4b1dead.jpg20230402_200041.jpg.75b69798ef1c5481a35916dd34a310a3.jpg

The Humbrol acrylic satin is great and dries pretty quick so after an hour or so I added the silver frames to the Cravens and gave it another go over before bed.

Cravens FO, brass sides on a mainline donor.

20230403_075505.jpg.2310b781ecd01113dfc62047de43447c.jpg

Tri Ang cut and shut FK, Hornby bogies for the time being but will be swapped.

20230403_075532.jpg.eda065457b90b08cb7b49acd634f249e.jpg

Dia 100 Bar Car, Southern Pride brass sides on a mainline donor, just need wheels for its B4's.

20230403_075602.jpg.17c6df50c201243b95eef2e2b473c5ff.jpg

Thompson buffet E1706E, really like this coach, created from some Bachmann brake end bodies picked up cheap on a chassis borrowed from a corridor second. Still got the interior to build. Thanks to @Signaller69 for paving the way with 1705.

Time to pack these away and drop them at the layout on the way to work, been invited for tea at me dads tonight so will no doubt come home with another batch of projects. All good fun but I need a break from blue and grey!

Cheers

Oh and last but not least the cut and shut Hachette to make the Doncaster corridor second, lots of cuts by the look of it but turned out well. Interior to go I'm and the roof will clip in properly!

Finally, the Cambrian Boplate E, nothing ground breaking and yes I know it's got the wrong number on but itl do.

Evening all, apologies I missed doing a post it seems of thr Airfix tankers we have been bashing about to make the longer class A ones. These tanks have been made up from second hand ones picked up cheap from various places so there are some odd mistakes on the chassis etc but the barrels got stretched OK.

Only things I have added are the RT Models etched walk ways and the very fine ladders, then a coat of humbrol dove grey and black washes before CCT transfers for them.

3 out of 5 done tonight, hopefully get them all done and varnished for the weekend.

More projects coaching stock projects looming after these.

All 5 tankers got a coat of humbrol satin spray today, beauty of this stuff is it dries dead quick so within an hour they were packed up for a swap over from the layout. Also good to see progress on the cattle wagons my Dad is on with after I came across a job lot that turned out to be well made on ebay, was surprised to find cattle trains ran to York well into the 70s so fits well with my area and usual time frame.

Well and truly back on the carriage painting/modification wagon again now. Currently on the go but not all in picture

Southern Pride Bullied SO with comet sides to become a maroon one from the swap deal in the 60s, underframe and roof done and sides rolled this evening ready for priming.

Tri Ang BSK to BSO to be B&G just on the last round of filler, my old man did all the mods so I'll do my bit with the paint.

2 triang sleepers, fettled up a bit and will be B&G

Gresley sleeper, I think it's a second but going B&G- part made Kirk Kit I think picked up for a 5er or so at Wakefield show last year.

Southern van going blue, think its a parkside kit, came from a job lot of 3 from ebay for about 3 quid!

20230506_163006.jpg.77738c205b122cce2563f52a6c542a8e.jpg

2 coats down, lots to go and orders for bits and transfers to be sorted. Should keep me out of bother for a few days. Bits of coaches scattered all over, glad I'm home alone for a couple of days!

Cheers

Evening all, bit of an update from the carriage works, things are moving on and a couple close to being 'nearly done'

The Bulleid is lined but I'm missing an S prefix , just doing the footboards on the chassis tonight and then need to find dome bearings and wheels for the bogies. The sides will be varnished before I glue them to the clear sides and last job will be door furniture all bring well.

The Gresley sleeper is painted and ready for lining. Looking at pics of the preserved one I'm going to do it like that, yes I know the model is a shorter one  but rule one and all that.

The other sleepers and the BSO probs need a couple more coats of blue before masking comes off and the RB & Griddle are tarted up ready for renumbering and other little bits.

Also on the go is a Southern Pride nightcap bar built as per instructions, need to do interior and transfers and that's done. Finally I have a Bachmann Thompson BSK made up from a job lot of bodies I got recently which will go into B&G as E1690E to go with my Newton Chambers car carriers when they arrive to make up the York-Inverness motorail rake.

Lots to do and lots of lining to order but getting there!

I wondered what brand of transfers you use? I could send you some coach "s" from HMRS Pressfix if it's any use. However if you use something else they might look odd.

John.

Ah cheers John, these look to be foxes waterslide straw ones, I think they should be gold but my Dad has been using straw on his maroon stock so saves me ordering more.

I'm not too worried just yet as I think he has a few more southern coaches in the works so we may end up ordering an souther sheet, I'll catch up with him tomorrow to compile a list of things to order.

This is an outstanding thread of coach modifications. Thanks for posting

Thanks mate, all good fun but big thanks go to my Dad who does the most of the butchering!

Slight update, I have the Bullied SO nearly done, I used an S off some spare model master sheets for engineers stock and gave it a bit of a thin wash of humbrol tan to tone down the white. Looks OK to me after a bit of weathering. Sides sprayed with humbrol satin last night and then glued to the clear sides. Looked OK this morning when I removed the pegs.

Bogies now made up too and just being painted and I'll add the door furniture tonight all being well.

Morning all, bit of a status update on the current batch of coaches:

Bulleid SO is pretty much done, bogies are missing nuts and bolts to fix to chassis but I'll drop it in at the layout today so calling this one done.

20230524_070912.jpg.90c7396ebd8e52e59d600f3db1418515.jpg

The Nightcap bar swiftly moved on last night, I made up an interior and pretty pleased with it so far, couple of bits to do on the inside and add handrails and door handles and the red stripe but it's coming on nicely.

20230524_071735.jpg.a7d62b0de01435494fcefe746d725322.jpg

20230524_071749.jpg.c15aa8219c31f126fd776ba8d03d10f0.jpg

The Gresley sleeper is ready for lining and lettering, I did put a yellow stripe on it only because I wanted to so it's a bit of rule 1 creeping in here.

20230524_071822.jpg.45e73d050a82acc79b798037061beafa.jpg

The soon to be Thompson SLBSK has moved onto the paint tidying phase. Still no joy on finding a pic of these things so this model is a bit of guesswork that the sleeper conversion didn't change much, I'll just model the windows with blinds down.

20230524_071836.jpg.9bccbcfae7cbeb7de38fa9070fe32801.jpg

The Dia 30 Griddle looks a bit tidier now with blue sole bars and footstep I added a red stripe masking off just above the top of the white lining. Just needs a renumber to E1102 and a but of weathering now.

20230524_071847.jpg.4571a061f8fb4c3a5e2aa1b391b9352b.jpg

The BSO and 2 sleepers are all prepped ready for lining and numbers, also the mainline RBR is ready for a renumber. Payday tomorrow so I'll treat myself to some transfers.

Cheers

James
