The shed at Chester Northgate on a day to day basis can be quite a mundane place with just the normal schedule of passenger trains plying their trade between Manchester Wrexham & New Brighton but every now and again specials turn up especially on weeks when Chester Races are being held. Yesterday a race goings special came in from Doncaster headed by a B17 Footballer 'Liverpool' no: 61664 so it was an a good 'cop' whilst it was on shed

Earlier in the day  BR Standard Class 4 no 76086 a Trafford Park loco came onto shed dropped its fire before running onto the turntable

Had a very unexpected visitor to Chester Northgate the other day which I managed to photograph in the shape of a BR 3F 0-6-0 which I believe is a Derby allocated locomotive.

The real reason for the visit of 43510 was it had visited the spray booth in my workshop under going a weathering session for a very good friend.

Thought I'd get some shots of the brewery area yesterday, now in the real world the  Chester Northgate Brewery was about half a mile from the station set just inside the city walls alongside the Northgate. I added the brewery for two reasons firstly to add an end scene to the layout and secondly to introduce some extra operation interest and of course from a mans point of view what better mix than Steam & Beer   :sungum:

J94 number 68063 reverses under the footbridge with some grain hoppers and heads to the end of the brewery head shunt whilst the Ted the gate man opens the gate into the private sidings within the brewery and after a green flag 68063 pushes the rake of hoppers into the brewery unloading area.

Finally 68063 is found in the loco shed under going preparation for the next shift.

Having been privileged to have a private viewing of CNG whilst in Wales last Month, I have to say, I was very impressed.

All the small details and things like the switch to give a Glow from the Ash Pit when a Loco is over it, and the fire in the Yard, and Welders etc.

I didn't get a chance to see the Smoke unit in action, but the Track work and Buildings are really impressive.

Good luck with the sale Martin, this Layout deserves a good home and to be seen at many more shows in years to come.

Well I'm still the owner of Chester Northgate Shed after a 10 day auction the layout received over 700 viewings and there were 20 watchers ....but no offers. mmmmm  :scratchhead:  :scratchhead:  I will re-advertise it over the Christmas period of 'enforced enjoyment' maybe interested parties will have time to travel over to have a look . I'm always open to sensible offers  :sungum:  :sungum:

Meanwhile I been re-creating a scene from the late nineteen fifties.

Two very old LNER locomotives are on shed awaiting their next turn whilst the crews have a chat before returning to their footplate duties.

A very evocative shot,Martin,

Though I'd put it no later than 1955; maybe '56.

I hope the layout sells.

I never did much bother with Chester Northgate Shed. The last time I looked in there (many, many years ago), there was an Ivatt Flying Pig and a Fowler 2-6-4T on shed. That was after the D11s and the ex-GC tanks had gone, and DMUs had the majority of the passenger work.

I never, ever saw a B17 on there (even in May, during the races). Did they ever work to Chester?

Regards,

Tony.

Just as a follow up on the re-created 1950's scene it's amazing the effect of black & white photographs have on the 'aged' effect

This thread has sort of passed me by until this page. Cracking layout. Hope there is another in the pipeline with a step-by-step description of its building.

Thanks for your kind comments and sorry I've only just picked up your post. I'm currently building another cheshire lines layout called 'Chumley End' which has it's own thread

If it's in Cheshire, shouldn't that be CHOLMONDELEY End?

(For those not in the know, it's pronounced 'Chumley'.  Why?  Goodness knows!)

HELLO ALL........:yahoo_mini:

I'm very pleased to announce that Chester Northgate Shed 6D  has been invited to appear at the Hazel Grove Model Railway Show 26th / 27th  October 2019.

The last time the layout was out on tour was Wigan 2017 which was it's second outing so I decided this weekend that it was time to make sure that all was still in working condition. As a sale prior to Christmas was unsuccessful I have had a good long think about the future of the layout in general. From a personal point of view I do enjoy operating the layout but in it's current configuration where operation is from behind the back scene it's not practical for home operation and the space confines within the shed. I was also unhappy with the operation and layout of the fiddle yard even though I had changed it after it's first showing, it was all to cluttered especially during exhibition operation. The other part of the whole set up that I was not happy with was that to operate it from behind the back scene it needed a step up platform to be able to view the layout as a whole whilst operating, and as myself and other group members are not getting any younger I decided that a safety issue could arise.

After much thought I have decided to rebuild the fiddle yard so that operation can take place from the front of the layout both at home and at exhibitions. The new fiddle yard will involve building a transverser for storage of all stock and below this will be a newly constructed control panel so that the layout can be operated from the fiddle yard end.

The first part of the construction has been to match the connecting end former of the old fiddle yard with a new deeper former so that the control panel can be incorporated below the storage area as well re-using the lighting pelmet.

The other part of this construction is going to involve extending the wiring loom to the fiddle yard end and I am currently await the arrival of  computer extension leads.

Work is progressing slowly on the new fiddle yard and as is my normal strange way of construction it's ' build & design' as the creation gets put together.

The new control panel will fit into the base of the board where the cut out area is with the sets of switches mounted onto a piece of ply  which will be  recessed back from the front edge so that the switches are protected. The sliding traverser will have seven roads for storage of locomotives and wagon stock which I hope will be less cluttered than my previous fiddle yard attempts.

How easy will access be to the control panel when the traverser is slide completely forward?

The traverser will not protrude beyond the front of the board so no problem with access . Thanks for the thought though
