Booking is now open for the British Festival of Railway Modelling 2016.

We’re pleased to announce a fantastic line-up of layouts and look forward to welcoming you to Doncaster for our 20th anniversary of the show!

Tickets are £8 in advance or £7 for BRM Subscribers. Booking in advance will save you money on entry, and give you 30 minutes early entry to the show. You will also receive a free showguide. Better still, there is no charge for an e-ticket.

Remember if you subscribe to British Railway Modelling magazine, entry will cost £7.00 up until the closing date at 12 noon on 12 February. You will need to enter BRM followed by your BRM subscriber number (eg. BRM85460) in the promo code box before you checkout, in order to receive your discount. If you don’t know where to find your BRM subscriber number, please click here.

I have to say that's a great line-up that Sam has spent so many hours pulling together, many of the layouts have been seen on the pages of RMweb and within BRM so it's a great chance to see the work of fellow members. It promises to be a rather special event.

Appears that the ticket pricing structure has returned to normal and Warners have taken notice by giving us Hard Copy Subscribers our £1.00 discount concession back with no hidden extra fee for etickets. But the down side is that those modellers who have no computer access will be out of pocket if they want to take advantage of these advanced ticket prices and early entry, by having to pay a £2.50 charge to have them posted. Looks like is going to be a good show - enjoy

I seem to remember an unsurpassed number of layouts and far greater numbers of specialist traders too in those early days than are ever seen now, spilling over into a large marquee as well as the main exhibition hall. It's a great shame that far more was not done to cultivate continued and growing participation by quality specialist traders.

It's a great shame that far more was not done to cultivate continued and growing participation by quality specialist traders.

A lot has changed in 20 years. For a start, higher quality RTR means much lower demand for the specialist trade products at anything other than a specific finescale show. Wagon kits are still selling, better than ever according to some reports, but loco kits and the parts to complete them? A much harder sell.

The Internet means specialists can sell 24/7 without the expense of appearing at a show. Even if the stand were free, fuel and accommodation costs would eat any profits generated. Why bother when the customers can still find you? Many traders never show at all nowadays.

Products have also changed. 20 years ago you bought flock powder not electrostatic grass and the appropriate applicator. Now shows will see at least a couple of sources of these. Ready to plant buildings didn't really exist so greater supplies of plastic sheet were required, although you'll still get this at the show.

No doubt like others, I have had the e-mail from Model Rail Live.  Out of idle curiosity I cluck on the link for 'Demonstrators' and was taken to the list of theatre presentations.  I was left wondering whether this is an aberrant link or if perhaps there are no demonstrations as hardened exhibition goers have come to know and expect them.  I do hope that this is not another example of Warnerese to follow the translation of 'traders' as 'exhibitors' ...

That certainly looks to be a much improved line up of layouts compared to recent years. There is even a sighting of some GCR pre-grouping.  I will be there on the EMGS stand but I just hope that we are not too close to one of the worst offenders in the field of over loud DCC sound on the show circuit. If we are, look out for the one with the headphones/ear protectors/earplugs. That will be me.

Well done for listing 80 "Traders" on the heading, rather than the previous "Exhibitors".

A number of specialist traders have cut back (or are thinking about cutting back) on their attendance at shows. I tend to divide shows into categories of either "modeller" shows or "general public" shows. I don't think that it is any coincidence that the specialist traders still go to events like EXPO EM or Scaleforum, where the sorts of people who will browse and buy their products tend to gather.

Other shows tend to be much more RTR based and box shifters and discount merchants can sell their wares. From having attended quite a few of the Doncaster shows, the mix of visitors between modellers and general public/families seems to be weighted firmly in the direction of the general public and from talking to specialist traders I know that their sales at such events make it not worth while paying all the costs involved to be there and sell very little.

I don't know but I can imagine that the rental for the venue at Doncaster will be quite high, resulting in the need for a high ratio of traders to layouts plus probably a high (higher than some shows anyway) stand rental, otherwise the show wouldn't be worth putting on for Warners in profit terms. A high stand rental and potentially small sales don't exactly encourage the more specialist traders to come along.

Is this show still on?  No entries since 27th November and every link I click on produces and "Error 404 Page not found" message.  Furthermore, the Doncaster Racecourse website does not have it listed.  I was trying to gauge an idea of the opening times with a view to booking rail tickets on the Saturday.  Can anyone help?

I was speaking to Sarah from Warners today and she said see you at Doncaster so yes it must be on

It's very definitely on but I can see the links are not working. I believe there will be a change in the destination of the landing page over the next day or so. Hold fire for a couple of days and I'll give an update on a link to the booking page.

Just a quick note re our layout.

Falcon Road & Oil Drum Lane is now Falcon Road and Prospect Yard.

It's correct on the Doncaster website but the original post was made in October before the name change.

Cheers and see you there.

Has anybody else had problems booking tickets recently with the subscribers discount for this exhibition? The subscriber’s link adj to the ticket price takes you to an ERROR 404 page, it claims that it’s being worked on to be fixed, but it’s been like this for several days now. The promo box on the front page won’t accept my subscriber number, stating that’s its invalid, and yes, I did put BRM before my subscriber number. So I went ahead and started to order my ticket in the normal way, expecting to find a promo box near the end of the checkout process, but as I failed to see one, I aborted the checkout before I confirmed my PAYPAL payment as I was fairly confident that I was going to pay the full price. I remember these are the same problems that occurred last year for the Peterborough Exhibition. What is going on, or am I missing something??
