Appleby Frodingham Railway Preservation Society. 21st May 2016.

Avonside Cranford

The only preservation society railway where you also get to see a real industrial railway in action.

ApFrod-045.jpg

The good old Yorkshire Janus diesels appear to be almost extinct, replaced by these hideous foreign things. What are they?

Hi Ruston,

I'm glad you enjoyed the tour on the 21st, I was shunting that tour and Cranford worked very well on that tour with her sounding like a beast going up the perimeter hill. The new locomotives are the ex-Lackenby Di8 bo-bo locos originally from Norway as Russ and Mick have already said.

Quainton Road on the first of this month.

I'm intrigued by the triple coupling hooks.

Just look at how much kindling and coal there is in there!

The last of the line

It's not obvious from this picture, but all three locos had their regulators wide open when I took this.  The sound was great!

The track of flat-bottomed rail running up middle is still part of the national network.  Freight-only at the moment, it might well become part of HS2.

Possibly the worst livery ever applied to  loco?

Tanfield Railway "Legends of Industry" gala, 11th June. Visiting locos were Manning Wardle L class Sir Berkeley and USA tank 30065, painted and numbered as an NCB loco, as based at Hartley Main Colliery.

The next outing will probably be to the Foxfield gala. Does anyone know what, if any, visiting engines will be there?

The Foxfield Gala roster does not look too exotic, with a visiting Austerity, apparently the Beyer Peacock 0-4-0ST failed. The NSR 0-6-2T is apparently there but static. Still the only place you'l see a working Crane Tank.

"Steam Engines in operation throughout the weekend:
The currently planned engines are:-
Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST "Norman" - Courtesy of Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway and Southern Locomotives Ltd
Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST  "Whiston"
Bagnall 0-4-0ST  No.2842
Dubs Crane Tank 0-4-0CT No.4101
Bagnall 0-6-0DM "Wolstanton""

Just to update this, the gala now has two visiting locos and the line up is:

Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST "Norman" - Courtesy of Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway and Southern Locomotives Ltd

Avonside 0-6-0ST 'Cranford' from Appleby Fordingham

Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST  "Whiston"

Bagnall 0-4-0ST  No.2842

Dubs Crane Tank 0-4-0CT No.4101

Unfortunately Bellerophon has been accidentally double booked and will be at the Middleton Railway the weekend of the gala, much to our chagrin!

Talyllyn Grand Finale

The Grand Finale was the concluding event of the Talyllyn 150 celebrations which included bringing together the five surviving British based Fletcher Jennings locos with the Betchworth Three, Captain Baxter, Townsend Hook and William Finlay coming to Tywyn. The event marked Dolgoch's 150th birthday and the 150th anniversary of the first passenger train run on the Talyllyn.

Whilst Talyllyn and Dolgoch operated passenger, goods and mixed trains on the TR, Captain Baxter shuttled up and down a short length of standard gauge track at Wharf.

This was the first time since Betchworth quarry closed that the three locos had been reunited, plus it's the first time that the Talyllyn Fletcher Jennings locos have met another FJ loco since they emerged from the factory. It was also the first meeting of the only two surviving Fletcher's Patent Locos.

It was a fantastic and very busy weekend and I was fortunate enough to be driving both Dolgoch and Captain Baxter over the weekend.

Thanks, I hope they dont repaint NSR 2, after 50+ years the livery looks just right for a working loco. Probably needs new wheel tyres though. Cranford also looks splendid.

A couple of mine from Foxfield as well.  The first one is very similar to Ruston's.  Not really surprising as I was standing next to him.

No. 2 storming the bank.

Note that 'Dubsy' the crane tank is assisting at the rear, the two of them producing a considerable amount of low level cloud cover and partially hiding Ruston himself!

And the vintage carriages which did little to help my bad back!  But it was a very interesting ride and they are in super condition.

I made a slight cock up because i didnt have enough on me for the £10 to get in so instead i went everywhere else instead, the foot crossing by the tunnel, Beza road and walked up as far the new road bridge. my first time walking around the area and i will probably do this from now on as well having a ride

Does NSR No2 live at Foxfield now?

I remember a footplate ride on her on the line from Sandhole washery to Sanderson's Sidings with my Dad. A marvellous morning!!!

Great shots! I must try and get to the Foxfield line again.
