DavidB-AU
A Swedish rail operator has vowed to name one of its trains Trainy McTrainface after a public vote, saying it would bring joy to people disappointed when Britain rejected the name Boaty McBoatface for a polar research ship following a similar poll. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jul/20/swedish-rail-firm-approves-trainy-mctrainface-as-newest-member-of-its-fleet

eastwestdivide
Well, sceptical as ever, I followed the links off MTR Express's own site via https://mtrexpress.se/sv/press and ended up at two official press releases (in Swedish): the first, from 18th http://www.mynewsdesk.com/se/mtr-express/pressreleases/taaget-ska-heta-trainy-mctrainface-har-folket-bestaemt-2072732 (Tåget ska heta Trainy McTrainface, har folket bestämt = Train to be called Trainy McTrainface, the people have decided) and this from 21st http://www.mynewsdesk.com/se/mtr-express/pressreleases/trainy-mctrainface-blev-en-vaerldsnyhet-2077848 (Trainy McTrainface blev en världsnyhet = Trainy McTrainface went global) [edited for missing "ever"] Edited July 23, 2017 by eastwestdivide

RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted July 22, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 22, 2017 In a similar way you get the Politicians you deserve! Isn't that something we'd all rather ignore? After all, when governments do stupid things it's much nicer to dismiss politicians as idiots rather than accept that their decisions are to a large extent driven by what they perceive to be what voters want them to do. EddieB
Where DOES that idiotic format come from? I think it started with some BBC "wag" (overpaid, no doubt). Not funny the first time around, and progressively worse ever since.
Mad McCann
Well, at least there was no danger of it getting named 'Elizabeth' in Sweden... ;-) D.
eastwestdivide
Where DOES that idiotic format come from? Apparently a former BBC presenter on This Morning Jersey (obviously highly paid!), who saw some of the silly names being suggested when they had a poll for naming the Antarctic exploration vessel (eventually named after David Attenborough), and decided to add his own suggestion. He later apologised. Inspiration possibly from the comedy series Blackadder? There was an episode with the line "madder than Mad Jack McMad, the winner of last year’s Mr. Madman competition"
RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted September 16, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 16, 2017 I still think it was a bit sad that BAS discontinued their tradition of naming their ships after Antarctic explorers. Names like Bransfield and Biscoe are all but forgotten but they lived on in the names of BAS ships.

RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted November 18, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 18, 2017 (best read in a Two Ronnies news item voice) In other public vote naming news, two Doncaster road gritters have been named: Gritsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Anti-Slip Machiney and David Plowie http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-42026485 I heard that on the radio this morning. There were some really good suggestions but this made me laugh and that is quite unusual because I am a really miserable bas###d. I also consider this to be a very ingenious idea from a place where I though ingenuity had died when the Plant became a refurbishing depot (apologies to those that may work there) and Kellingly finally bit the coal dust. If anyone thinks this is all a load of carp then you must be even more miserable than me. Good afternnon. 36A
