Of all the items announced today, the Bulleid ' shortie ' sets are the stand out models for me.

For post-war Southern modellers, they are very versatile vehicles, and something to hang behind

Hornby's early malachite Merchant Navies.

These coaches were both main line and cross country vehicles and later used on branches as well.

They were well known on the latterday Somerset & Dorset line.

Well done Hornby, consider two sets sold.

Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah! This is indeed excellent news, well done Hornby. Hopefully it will encourage Bachmann to pull their finger out with developing the longer Bulleid coaches; they have held of for far too long and undoubtedly will pay a price for that.

I can see me needing to do some very careful financial planning to cope with what Hornby have announced today.

Many thanks Andy for getting all this out.

all the best

Godfrey

Courtesy of SEMGONLINE  I can see these make up into sets.

set 965--5711/2845/2846

set 973--5719/2861/2862

set 968--5714/2851/2852

set 972--5718/2859/2860

Formed 1946 and lasted well into the 60,s.

Listed as Waterloo-Wof E

Does this mean they were on the ACE and such trains  only or could they be used on the Bournemouth line?

regards,

Ed

From what we've been given so far, it LOOKS like these will be on the early-style Maunsell underframe not the revised version ( different battery boxes and dynamo ) that Hornby correctly used for their Driving Trailer ................. I hope they're aware of the apparent anomaly !!?!

You can use them on any Western or Central division steam operated lines.

Examples from memory and photographs: Somerset & Dorset, Guildford-Horsham, Horsham- Brighton,

Waterloo Bournemouth/ Exeter, Lyme Regis ( off a service to Exeter from London ).

There is even photographic evidence of a part set on the Hayling Island branch.

One of the last steam runs on the Bournemouth line had two of these coaches in the train.

The Southern modeller has never had it so good!.

Brilliant news and another clever use of the existing Maunsell chassis. Will have to downgrade my Ian Kirk/Hornby Maunsell conversion 3 carriage set, just as I did with the Maunsell diner last year. Will be ordering both BR livery 3 set types.

They were frontline stock when built and certainly appeared in the ACE - there is a video of the ACE leaving Waterloo in SR days with two sets in the formation.  Per Mike King by 1947 they were Waterloo-Salisbury and the Bournemouth-Weymouth line.  As 64ft 6in stock came on stream they tended to be 'demoted' to main line stopping/semi-fast services.  In Nov 1959 963-972 went to the S&D but returned to the SR proper for summer 1960 but from 1961 were allocated  to the S&D for longer periods.

What I find refreshing about this announcement is that they will be available this coming April.  Compare that to some of Bachmann's products: for example, I pre-ordered the 2-HAP in March 2016 and yet there's still no indication as to when this will be available. And Bachmann's Bulleid coaches announced this time last year? Could be still a couple of years away .....

Let's hope Hornby aren't promising more than they can deliver.

Yes, set 978 went to the Hayling Island branch from 1959-1962 - usually running as 2 coaches, BSK and CK.

....... or mix 'n' match with a driving trailer ( Hornby ) or non-gangwayed Mk1 stock ( Replica ? ) ........... did some of the rebuilt LSWR stock gravitate there too ??!?
