Answers to questions raised:

Grain hoppers - These are Martin's work and I understand they are modified Hornby Dublo and Dapol. Mr Wales would be able to answer better.

The fiddle yard was reconfigured to improve operation, nothing to do with the scenic changes. All work was done simply to make the best of the layout and to enhance the scenery. It hasn't been extended at all.

In the absence of a reply from Martin, the grain wagons are the Dapol bodies on a kit chassis. They are still short of being scale length (10mm seems to ring a bell), but if you keep them all together, you can get away with them. There are an awful lot more photos elsewhere but this captures the spirit. The only missing item was a starter signal and that was sorted out on Monday evening. As Steve says, come along to the BRM show at Doncaster and see it in the flesh.

Its strange that the layout now has trees on it When I built it for martin that was one area he did not want on it I had made some but under no circumstances did he want them puting on. I did not even get a mention in the RM and have had to face many people saying that I did not make this layout and by saying I did I am trying to take the praise from martin.Well I do have pages of notes on the build as well as 1500 plus photos of the building of it which I will now start and place on this thread showing the complete build of it,

Regards

Peter

Great looking layout!

What is the parentage of those grain hoppers?

BTW - that link to the old story just takes me to the RMweb forums homepage.

Hi TC

The whole of the buidling of this was taken of by Andy York due to problems on what was being said on the Thread but I can give all the details of how I built it with the excemtion of the station building which was made by Neil.

Hi Peter, the original thread is still there, link goes to where it started getting to look a bit like a layout (as there was a lot of waffle beforehand ;) )

I think the old archive forum was inaccessable for a while due to technical problems, but it's certainly there now? HTH

Hi Steve...

Man... this brings back memories... and great to see on here.

I first meet Peter & Martin when I was considering to join a Model Club and it just happened to be in my local village hall in late December 2008.  I remember as this layout was just base boards on legs with a cork underlay glued down with no scenery started on it whatsoever and handmade track already laid on a track bed, which was the first time I had ever seen handmade track because I was impressed how good the point work looked, which up till then I had only ever heard of Hornby and Peco track/points...etc being new to it all.

I love to take photos of Model Layouts, I’m sure Peter will agree.  I spend a lot of hours taking Photos of many of Peter’s Layouts that he has made in the time I have known Peter and also to see him working on all his other modelling skills of buildings, from painting of, to the flocking and track making, weathering...etc, so it’s to no surprise that I have taken just over 1000+ photos of this layout excluding those that Peter as taken.

When I saw it in the Model Rail magazine, it was great to see as this was the first layout I had ever seen being built to which, I have picked up many tips from Peter just by watching him Model over the last 5 years or so, so to see it in Printed form was even better.

However, it was a bit disheartening to read that Peter didn’t even get any acknowledgement or thanks for his hard work and effort that he put into the layout, Martin didn’t give Peter a mention for some unknown reason, perhaps that we will never know why... but a great layout to see in Print and knowing that I was with Peter through most of its scenic side of its creation is great to see on here as a thread...

The alterations are great to see and good to see some slight changes to suit your own likes and dislikes of what we want on our layouts, like the bridge half way down looks good and effective and separates the left from the right side of the layout along with a few other bits added, taken away or changed.  I will have to sort some photos to show its early beginnings before it went to Martin Jones to take out on exhibitions etc, still a great Layout I have to say... well done.

When is it next due at an exhibition...?   :locomotive:

Warm regards

Jamie

Thanks for the pictures Jamie.

Our intention here, is how an existing layout can be taken and transformed. The origin of the model was immaterial to us. Martin is a big fan of our models and often contributes his own talents by way of  stock for those layouts. We thought it would be fun to take his layout and rebuild it to match the style and presentation we tend to favour for our models, by way of a big thank you for his efforts.

We do, as a group, have a track record of refreshing existing layouts. Two of these, Holcombe Brook And Tottington and Outwell Village have featured on this Forum, although they, admittedly, were not commissioned models. We also did a make-over job on our own Market Weighton, as featured in Issue 57, March 2012 of Hornby Magazine.

The changes and improvements we have made have been entirely down to us, our experience at showing layouts and the research we have done on the area depicted. Martin had no say in the matter except for trusting us and giving us a free hand with it.

The model as built had excellent trackwork and was a really good base from which to start. However, with the modifications we made to the substructure, lighting, fiddleyard and electrics, plus changes to the buildings and scenics, it has to be said just the bare skeleton of that original model now exists. The layout not only looks and runs differently to how it did but it is displayed and transported in a much different way.

We hope that our combined efforts have resulted in a model that Martin is both proud to own and that will give him many years of pleasure on the exhibition circuit. Which is after all why any of us build these layouts.

The layout's first outing in its new guise is the Warners/BRM show at Doncaster Racecourse on 9th & 10th February. There is a write-up in the latest edition of BRM.

It will also be at the Warners/BRM/Model Railway Club Exhibition at Alexandra Palace on 23rd & 24th March.

Cheers
