Class 37 Photos...

Recommended Posts

Scanned from an old print I took back in the summer of 1986
2 unidentified 37's on the return journey from Aberthaw power station,
with a train of empty hopper wagons, pass the disused Gileston Station on the Vale of Glamorgan line

At this time, there was no passenger service on the line,
and hadn't been since the 1960's
However, the line has had passenger services reinstated in the past 10 years or so....
Sadly, Gileston Station remains closed

At Eastleigh 100 open day, which is already further back than I dare to think about......

422 sits inside the shed, with an unidentified sister, painted in pale blue....

I'm pretty sure that 308 in pale blue in the background.

Cheers,

Al.

You remember correctly (but I can't list the crossings unless I look them up ;) and I think the Instruction actually said that the lights must be used approaching and passing the listed crossings).

Leekman beat me to it - but as I'd already scanned the entry in the Cardiff Division Sectional Appendix 1969, only the 'accomodation crossings' are shown on the scan below, the level crossings were at Bucknell, Llangadog, Ffairfach, Llandebie and Pantyffynnon..

.

I've also attached a scan of part of the 'Lucas' headlight mounting arrangement for Cl.03 shunters 03119 / 120 / 141 / 142 / 144 / 145 / 151 / 152 - the drawing is dated 10/12/1976. I suspect the Cl.37s used the same, readily available headlight.

.

Finally, a Landore Cl.37 complete with headlight rolls an 'up' freight along the SWML through "bomb alley" near St. Fagans during the mid 70s.

The bit about the switching off of the headlight was honoured more in the breach than in the observance, from what I remember of waiting for the last Salop- Swansea of the day at Llanelli in the early 1970s.

"And management in Swindon now a'bed would think themselves accursed.................."

.

Another indescretion they didn't catch

Here are 3 photos of the same loco - 37037 in 3 different liveries....
Firstly, in Railfreight Metals livery, in the 90's
Then in BR corporate blue, in 2007, on the South Devon Railway
and a year later, in green on the same preserved line

EDIT: I don't know why they repainted it
It looked in really good nick, in blue
I'm glad to see they restored the buffers & buffer-beam skirt,
but wish they'd painted a small yellow warning panel on the front....

.... unless they've done that since?

Here's another couple of my happy snaps, taken on my former stamping grounds.

First is 37 120 at Broxbourne in August 1975. The coolant staining down the side of the loco would make an interesting weathering effect, I think.

Second is 37 110 on the stops at Liverpool Street on 28th September 1980. And yes, I did use a flash to get the shot because this part of the old station was always a bit murky. It's hard to believe that what was then an everyday shot is now over 33 years old! Must be a sign of advancing years...

30th April 2003, this time the Cardiff Docks - Newport ADJ return working sits inside the ABP Coastal Containers terminal with 37419 biding its time until departure.

.

Penarth pier can be seen in the background - now recently reopened after restoration, a first class job done too.

Climbing away from Margam, through Kenfig Burrows, Stormy (Down) Bank towards Pyle - Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.

And the pairs of Grids that replaced them could scream a bit.
