RMweb Gold toboldlygo Posted March 24, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 24, 2018 Here you go then guv'nor, a great model made even better by who else but toboldlygo himself, take a bow sir, if you can ignore for the moment that passing piece of history, great British locomotive design.... 70042_Britannia_country5_3a_r1200.jpg 70042 'Lord Roberts' passing Thankerton, just south of Carstairs, on a Glasgow-Carlisle turn, c1966. edited cheers p.s. I was curious to see which in any other Britannias in the 70000-70045 series kept their original deflector handrails to the bitter end, and they were very few, after a quick glance at 'The Book of...' by Irwell. Certainly the Carlisle-based engines, which was a majority of them. I've been busy with a lot of GWR things for several members of ANTB... 1361 class 1363, previewed on here, but now complete... My Nemesis the 72xx A resurrection of epic proportions - 5771 Spitfire (see ANTB for details) ready for weathering (didn't need the Genesis device either) A back-dated 3000 ROD Class And I still managed to squeeze a bit of work in on the Sea Fury...

34theletterbetweenB&D
Well now, it has happened. I had to wait quite a while to receive my B12/3, having been only allowed to test run it after purchase before it was packed away months ago to provide my dearly beloved with a gift to give on my birthday. But now it is mine to play with and assess properly, and is the first UK OO steam model in my possession to have busted through the 90% rating mark on the scheme I use. It doesn't have a hint of the visible line where the chassis block enters the boiler tna some examples have displayed, the sole demerits are for the bogie fore and aft slop and bogie wheel non-conformance to the correct protruding hub pattern, and both these I can fix. Really impressed by the construction and the resulting traction, this is the best RTR UK 4-6-0 I have ever seen in these respects. (Outpulls the 4-6-0 selection I have had my hands on to test, Hornby B1, B17, Arthur, Castle, Patriot, Bachmann Jubilee, Std 5MT: no wonder they were the last inside cylinder 4-6-0 types in service ;-) all quite simply down to mass in the right place due to plenty of metal in the body construction.) ... Sea Fury... I first saw one of these monsters fly at a Confederate Air Force display many decades ago, and if there is a more scary single piston engine fighter operating, I want to know about it. Still remember the commentator announcing it as "this one shot down Migs". The pilot did the low level beat up that just doesn't happen nowadays, 20 feet off the deck and giving it all the beans...

B12/3 is one very impressive loco - I have one to do halfway my renumbering/weathering stack Yep, the Sea Fury is a beast and a confirmed MIG Killer. In fact the A scheme of my build is one those Sea Fury's, though I'm doing the Historic flight scheme - as I was lucky enough to sit in the cockpit of her
robmcg
Tell ya what toboldlygo there's an easy hundred waiting for you if you purchase lightly-weather and deliver an R359TTS 46235 Duchess to my humble abode this week. It must of course be faultless. I know that neither you nor Hornby PLC will let me down. Consumer guarantee act applies of course. I was idly wondering what the LMS and Stanier might have made of a 2-8-2.... I know that post-nationalistion there were some who preferred a mikado over the 2-10-0..

robmcg
I don't know if I'm lucky or what, but found a Duchess 46235 R3509TTS at the equivalent of £175... and VAT off under £150, and international post-free I couldn't resist. Now looking at toboldlygo's weathering I am thinking I might have a go at lightly weathering the 46235 model into something resembling the look of late BR steam days with on Duchesses and Princesses quite a lot of oil on the motion and grime in the nooks and crannies where a quick clean never quite got to. I think I have some weathering powders stashed somewhere and some brushes, and some thinners, What can possibly go wrong? Here is a new photo of one of my recent purchases, Clan 72008 with lowered front lamp bracket, redolent of days hanging around engine sheds in the early 60s, and it probably needs a bit of weathering too. cheers Edited March 28, 2018 by robmcg

robmcg
On the theme of not-entirely-Hornby here s Heljan's lovely 47XX in GW green... heavily criticised in the relevant Heljan thread, smokebox lance too small, frame stays wrong-ended, rivets to large, I sometimes despair at the ability of armchair reviewers, and this mostly by people who haven't bought one, never mind, I have edited this ever so slightly, and have bought this and a BR black one. Here also 'my' BR black 4706 Both pictures edited from Rails originals. Don't they look great? and I'm not even a student of Swindon. robmcg
I nearly put a picture of a Hornby engine in this thread then thought better of it, we need submarines, aircraft, motorbikes, and even as a last resort blue box GWR Halls to give balance to the site... here is a recent upgraded Bachmann V2, a model which to my knowledge has not received much comment. Edited of course. I do have a weathered Rails BR 45000 Black 5 coming, and Duchess 46235 so all is not lost for those of the true path....

robmcg
In looking at my not-very-large collection of Hornby A4s I was shocked and amazed to realise that Hornby have never done a full-fat super-detail 60022 Mallard in BR green and I shall have to concoct one for a picture by editing it. Must check my Irwell book to see what tenders are appropriate. The work never ceases!

Must check my Irwell book to see what tenders are appropriate. The work never ceases! I’m not sure but I think there is a BR Green super detailed A4 all be it early crest. I think it might have been produced for one of catalogue sellers like Littlewoods. I’ve certainly seen them for sale with traders at shows a couple of years ago. Cheap too ...
