nicktamarensis
Hello, I wonder if someone could supply extra info on some photographs in my possession taken at Eastleigh in 1949/50? My knowledge of wagons is slight so any info would be much appreciated to add to the minimal data recorded on the back of the prints. I can attach low res. scans of the vehicles in question if this helps. The vehicles are: SR(?) Covcar 14T S.2372. PO SALT ‘SNOWDRIFT SALT’ No. 306. 6T 15cwt PO SALT ‘STAFFORD SALT WORKS’ No.C.22. GW 25T LORIOT P 42356 13T open wagon with cable drum and cut-out sections made to all four sides of the wagon. 7.5cwt. D. S1674. 'ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS DEPARTMENT EASTLEIGH'. LMS 20T double bolster. M725809. GW 25T bogie bolster. W107344. This shows a heavy caterpillared agricultural/civil engineers tractor on board. Reg. number GAA694. Many, many thanks. Nick. talisman56
S2372 was a Diag.3102 (originally, later 3101) even-planked 'Covcar'/CCT van. The difference between diagrams is that the body length of D.3102 was 32ft 6.5in over end doors, not the 32ft 4.5in of D3101. Later the length difference was ignored and the D.3102 vans were altered to D.3101. S2372 was part of a lot (A460, authorised 17/5/29) of 40 'GUV' vans, later classified 'Covcar'. An additional 50 were authorised under lot A574 (16/5/30) and the whole 90 constructed at Ashford between 4/31 and 2/32, and numbered 2371-460. Under BR the 'Covcar' branding was altered to 'CCT'. Withdrawl commenced in 1962 and the last SR-design 'Covcar's were withdrawn in 1986, apart from those in departmental service. ----- The 13T open wagon with cutouts is a 1949 conversion (to D.1899) of pre-war SR D.1379 8-plank 12T open wagons. The D.1379 wagons were the most numerous variant of the 11,650 8-plank 10T/12T opens, constructed 1926-33 and numbered some 7,950 wagons, running numbers 29001-32000 (Morton 2-block brakes and lever one side) and 32001-36950 (Freighter brakes - 2 blocks and a lever on each side). In 1947, 60 were authorised to be converted into Signal Dept. cable-laying wagons, numbered DS1657-1716. The first 36 converted were renumbered per the authorisation, but then the decision was taken to just add a 'D' (Departmental) to the S3xxxx number and the remaining wagons were not renumbered. DS1674 was one of the early, renumbered, versions and I do not have a record of its original identity. EDIT: Having seen the OP's photo there are sets of brake gear each side so it is one of the Freighter versions... In 1970 DS1674 was allocated 'Cable Wagon Hove' and was pictured there on three occasions (pictures on Flickr). https://www.flickr.com/photos/31890193@N08/14980186029/
jwealleans
I thin we'd like to see the scans anyway, if it's not too much trouble...
nicktamarensis
Dear all, Many thanks for your extremely helpful responses. I wish I had the benefit of your knowledge and source material. I'll try and find something out about the salt company angle. There are more of these Eastleigh images from the same period as well as others from Ashford and a variety of other locations. With your forebearance perhaps I can revisit and ask for further info on these as well. Low res. scans below................ Cheers, Nick.
nicktamarensis
I've attempted to attach 9 scans of the aforementioned images - nothing happened other than an error message saying 'file size too big'. I then tried advanced loader - similar result. Any suggestions? Nick.

You will need to resize the images to make the files smaller to upload them. David
RMweb Gold PhilH Posted April 22, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 22, 2015 Under the Apps, and Content banner at the head of each page you will find an Image Editor if you click on the banner.Using this you can resize your image, 1200x 900 pixels is the maximum size which can be uploaded. You can obviously resize in your favourite image editor rather than this one, as I say 1200 x 900 is the size to aim for. Once resized you should then be able to upload the images.
