  4. Some of you know that Olddudders and I have our main homes in France and the UK, respectively. As we’ve been apart since early February, I was glad when cross Channel ferries resumed their operations. Brittany Ferries require everyone to don masks in public areas. Last Tuesday, I sailed overnight from Portsmouth to Ouistreham. Once on board, I spent the overnight voyage in my cabin, only emerging for breakfast where social distancing was enforced and everyone complied with the mask requirement without question. My mask was in place in public areas, apart from when eating or having my passport checked. Here in France, cooperation regarding the wearing of masks in all shops, surgeries, etc and on public transport appears to be universal.
  5. Ian (Olddudders) has just confessed to owning nine Picassos...... sadly, they are not priceless works of art!
  6. This was posted on Facebook today by a friend who is a member of the Haywood Permanent Way Society and relates to the mention of Alf Taylor in my original comment:- “Mrs Edna Taylor has asked me to send this post out on the Colwich and Little Haywood Facebook group: "To everyone concerned who has sent me a card, messages, presents, and flowers for my 95th Birthday. Thank you. These were very much appreciated. Love from Edna". This photo of Edna was taken on the afternoon of her recent birthday. The Colwich Memorial Garden was created by Edna's late husband Alf. This was following the 1986 Colwich Railway crash in which Driver Eric Goode sadly lost his life. Alf created and tended the garden until he passed away in 1997. The Memorial Garden now serves as a Memorial to both Driver Goode and to Alf. The garden has recently had a 'spruce up' both ready for the summer, and also to commemorate Edna's special birthday. The Colwich Memorial Garden will be featured as part of The Open Gardens Visual Open Day.“
  7. Yes, we are both fine, thank you! I’m looking forward to travelling to France by ferry, arriving on the 15th July. By then, it will have been six months since we were last together! Zoom has been a lifeline during that time! Hope all is well with you and yours.
  8. I wasn’t sure where to post this within Wheeltappers so I’ve settled on Early Risers. A good news story about a SE Railways employee is well worth sharing. It was originally posted on Facebook:- “Back to work today, forgot my pass so locked bike outside Cannon Street station. Left work at 6pm to find just the cut lock and no bike, resigned to never seeing my trusty steed again but asked the station if they have cameras. A guy appeared waving at me, asked me to put the code into my cut lock. He replied ‘I have your bike’ with a smile I will never forget!! His name is Abdul Muneeb and he works for South Eastern Railways, he was on a break and saw a guy bolt cut the lock and challenged him to give it back, he then took it inside and waited 4 hours after his shift finished to personally make sure I got my bike back. The world needs more Abdul’s, he is a legend of a man and a credit to his employer.“

  10. Les Miserables (to stay with the French theme!)
  11. My apologies for misleading the troops! I bow to your more accurate information!
  12. Sorry, Polly, not even after playing it on my Clavinova! It has the feel of a minor key but I’m not able to Name That Tune in 14! Failed!
  13. I saw that recently on TV! My research suggests it was “Carry On Again, Doctor”, released in 1969 so it would have been in colour, at least when viewed in the cinema!
  14. Apparently, the increases are mainly in Weston-super-Mare (largely due to day trippers from the Midlands) and Bristol but they’re recorded under the blanket heading of the SW.

  16. I know I’m a couple of years late to comment on this but it showed up as a link when I was researching this sad event. My interest stems from the fact that I lived in the adjoining village of Little Haywood at the time. Our church was opened to passengers from the trains where warmth and refreshments were provided. So many good hearted folk arrived with kettles that it blew the circuit! A few months later, many of us enjoyed a free trip by rail to London as a thank you from BR for our support. The memorial garden is now well maintained and the plaques to honour Eric Goode and Alf Taylor have recently been cleaned and polished by a friend of mine who is a member of the Permanent Way Society, as may be seen in this photograph.

  19. Your photos brought back memories! We went to the 1971 or 1972 Detroit Auto Show (I was in the US from June, '71 - May, '72) and remember the models (cars and girls!!), if not the exact year!
  20. My apologies: I’ve just checked and there are indeed five on his profile! This could well be a typo on his part but (and I need to inform you of this before he does!) it might explain the reason I was always given set two to teach for Maths.....!
  21. Really? Only counted four the last time I checked.....!
  22. But there are two letter d's in the middle so it should read as old dudders but Ian has elided the two words to make his name.
  23. You believe correctly regarding Olddudders - I know because I was there, too, although two years lower down the school. Many years later (2004) he traced me through (the now defunct) Friends Reunited and we have now been married for four and a half years. ❤️
