Well done a great post indeed. Much preferred King's Cross with A4s and Deltics of course. Likewise, the route west from Paddington before all that electrickery went up. Agreed on the preservationists as they are modellers on a 1/1 scale, with these days a very limited amount of ready to run being attractive.

That square looks like a school made example just like mine still in my tool box fifty years later, although the toffee hammer, screwdriver, scriber, dot punch and chisel have long since departed through the mists of time.

Yes tape has always worked for me on straight cuts, also let the cutter do the work ie lots of revs and very little pressure.

First rule when modelling beyond the lifetime of those of us still alive, is that you cannot be proven wrong unless the Great Western Museum can come up with a paint sample. If it looks right to you then it is right in my view. For guidance perhaps the earliest restoration of City of Truro had a shade of  green maybe selected by one of the "old boys" in Swindon's paint shop who as an apprentice might have worked on broad gauge locos or remembered them as a lad and thought City of Truro should be in the "correct" shade. Would it have been too different to what became the accepted green after the grouping, who knows? If you want get a few folk excited start a debate of the correct shade of Caledonian Railway blue in some circles... After all there is plenty of debate about shades of black elsewhere, and that is just about how much light they reflect back according to matt, sheen or gloss most of the time! If the locos were varnished they would appear to be in a different shade anyway if that helps or hinders the decision.

Follow our government's advice, strip out the old lump and install an old Hornby XO4 in its place, as they want us all to be driving electric cars very soon, you can get ahead of the game. Upgrade to a Portescap if you find the running a little rough or even go for a new DCC controller on the dashboard...

Just a thought why not if not already too late show the odd door either ajar or open to show some life and also a glimpse of the interior, don't get me wrong top marks so far all round.

If I remember correctly this was my first experiment with Johnson wax Klear floor polish applied by brush.  I didn't do the smokebox.  The whole lot was next covered with black gouache which I then cleaned off (probably with a cotton bud) except for the smokebox and rear of the tender.  This leaves a matt dirty finish on the uncleaned areas and in the corners.  I was going for the workworn but cared for 'shed favourite' look.

 

I've just finished my third C class for Cill which will feature in the next few weeks, by contrast this one looks distinctly uncared for!
