  1. Just think Julia, after you've had a little lie down in a dark room following the point rodding marathon you have ballasting to look forward to. Remind me, why is it we do this................?!!!:-)

Ah yes, because when its done it looks great and gives us enormous satisfaction. As others have said, fantastic stuff and well worth the effort.

  2. I have built one of these as purchased second hand off the Great Western by the North Somerset Light Railway but I do have a second etch in stock which I may well do as it should be having seen the stunning job you have made of yours.

Your work is some of the neatest I have seen and is always so crisp. Beautiful work, don't leave it 18 months before the next update on progress.

  3. Thanks Andy. The join twix body and buffer beam on yours looks neater than mine so I shall be stealing that idea as I still have two to do. I notice you have fitted a loop and dropper on the DG, I will be interested to see how much of the front end plumbing you can still fit on. One of the advantages of my fitting loops on both ends of my stock is that I don't have to fit any on locos and can also trim down the little wings of the buffing plate.

    cheers Jerry

ps. I am going to try to get up to Aldershot at the weekend.

  4. Looks good Andy and proves that there are more than one way to skin a cat - or skim a Hymek! Any chance of a front on view. I suspect your method of fixing the buffer beam to the body rather than my trimming the body to get it to sit lower will look better.

As for Blu Tack, along with cocktail sticks, it is indeed the first choice of all discerning modellers!

  5. This coming from someone who modelled 2mm scale onions on an allotment?!  ;)   I have to agree with you though - it's touches like these that make Julia's models stand out from the crowd. When are you starting on the wire runs for the signals, Julia?  :P

With all my preaching about the broad brush/impressionistic approach I don't think I will be allowed to live those onions down!!

I would have to agree with you though Andy, there are times when going the extra mile really pays dividends. The point rodding was certainly worth the effort,  I'm not convinced making individual prize onions was. I won't be doing it again!

  6. Hi chaps. The Western I have does have issues, principally that there is so much slop twix worm and drive gear on the bogie tower that they disengage when there is a slight change in gradient (as on the front of Highbury) leaving the motor spinning but the wheels still. I have been in correspondence with Dave at Dapol and he has told me that the factory in China are tightening the tolerances so I'm confident that this is an isolated example.

That problem aside its a superb model that really captures the characteristic look of these handsome locos. I have a couple on order.

  7. A chap couldn't wish for better neighbours! A cracking weekend, St Ruth (Penzance!) looked and worked superbly. The only slight downside was that I didn't get time to 'borrow' a couple of engines for a trip down the North Somerset Light -  next time....:-)
