  1. Paula and I were on the 2mm demo at the fiddle yard end of the layout and rather inconveniently there were people two or three deep in front of the layout spoiling our view all weekend - shocking!

Seriously, the layout really is looking superb now.

  2. Hi Ian, I have just picked up one of these etches so I can add another Terrier to the North Somerset Light's roster.

I have used several of the Nigel Lawton 8mm motors in my. NSLR locos and the MR 1F on my Bath Queensquare thread also has one. Almost without exception I make up a simple sadly from plasticard, or filed into the PCB spacer depending on the amount of space available and glue the motor in with a spot of superglue. I tend to set the mesh up tight then glue a piece of paper or two to the motor to give a nice working clearance. If you need to take the motor out at some point in the future put a small screwdriver under one end and twist to break the joint.

I'll post a picture of one with the lid off if interested.

  3. Hi Richard, I also have a spare Pictroller following a similar experience!

In my opinion you still can't touch the Pentroller for control of coreless motors and would dearly like to get hold of another as a spare but those that come up for sale fetch silly prices.

  4. A really good weekend, we were back to back with st Ruth. The team are a lot of fun and we managed a beer on Friday evening as well as plenty of banter on the Saturday - along with a couple of Pauline's cakes:-)

A well deserved best in show for St Ruth and good to see it retained by a 2 mm layout - we won it last year.

Overall a good show although, as others have said it was difficult to get away on a one day show, particularly as Kim and I unusually didn't have any guest operators.

Another treat for 2 mm fans was Julia's demo complete with a section of her superb layout Highcleare.

  5. A fascinating read. All that computer aided design goes way over my head, I still use bendy stick and pencil to lay all my track work! That said, I can confirm that soldered points and easitrac plain track, when carefully ballasted and painted will be fine. Tucking Mill is done this way and people regularly ask what methods of track construction I've used. I also use a moving sleeper for a tie bar and find it perfectly unobtrusive and very reliable.

    Following with great interest, Jerry

  6. An interesting and useful tail Andy. I also tend to use top acting wipers where there is room as they are much easier to fit, adjust and keep clean. I also open out the axle holes so that there is a little bit of slop - in much the same way as you do for Simpson springs.

I suspect things will improve even further when you fit pickups to the pony trucks. I seem to remember when we had a look at the loco at Warley that there was some self centring springing on the trucks, any chance of a bit more info on that.

Driving between layouts must have been a bit nerve wracking - hope you weren't out of gauge!

Cars weren't a problem but at least one layout suffered from being rammed by a mobility scooter over the weekend.

  8. Must admit I saw more of the back of the layout than I did the front - mainly due to the constant crowd, but you made excellent neighbours and contributed to a very enjoyable weekend. Hope we weren't too rowdy on the other side of the pillar!

Will put some pictures of visiting locos, including a couple of beauties from St Ruth, on the Highbury thread in the next day or two.
