  1. I think I still carry my late 70s/early 80s prejudices against class 47s - there were loads of them and they always seemed to be replacing something more interesting.

I'm with you Andy, when I was a spotter in the early 70s the cry of 'not another Duff' was regularly heard - they seemed to be everywhere - usually replacing a Western:-(

That said, I'm currently doing 47091 Thor which was a bit of a celebrity locally as it was the only one we saw regularly that retained two tone green (albeit pretty grotty) with the tops number.

Still very much enjoying your blog updates - keep them coming.

  2. Yes, that's exactly the issue.

I know that Jerry is a PICtroller fan but one of our friends in the North bought one (or maybe more) a year or so back and had issues with them. From what I heard they were taking too long to work out what sort of motor they were looking at with strange results while they were 'thinking'. This is all second hand info so I'm not ruling one out but trying to figure out a way to try one out before committing funds.

I reverted to my Pentroller as the Pictroller didn't like the little 8mm coreless motors - either Faulhaber or Nigel Lawton, it was great with all other motors. I really like the Pentroller and use it all the time. The great advantage with the Pictroller was that it eliminated my constantly forgetting to switch between the motor options on the Pentroller.

  3. So far I have an A1, A4 and a B1. I hope to add a few others when funds permit. Also, I'd like to get hold of a shed allocation for Grantham from the late 50's just so I get the locos numbers correct and also any visiting locos.

As others have said, really starting to look very good. Regarding Grantham allocation, a look at this thread and maybe a pm might help  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/58826-grantham-the-streamliner-years/

  4. I suspect, as Bernard has suggested that your chassis is 2mm, your body is N. I would adjust the chassis to suit the body. The main problem with chopping up the body is that it will always be weak around the joints.

As an aside, I am very interested in your chassis building method using 0.5mm PCB, I'd be interested in more details on that.

  5. You may find it hard to believe but I made the decision that Bath would be DCC some time ago due to the operating pattern and the huge number of sections that would be required. I was going to keep the North Somerset stuff analogue but have decided that, in time, that will be going DCC as well mainly due to the operating possibilities opened up by the Tucking Mill extension.

  6.

As for the western, its added to my 'to do' pile for now. As Jerry said, removing the wheels shouldnt be that difficult but I think I will wait untill he has tried it first! I think the model has the potential to have a go at some laser cut glazing too...

One advantage with the Dapol Western is that you get a spare bogie with it which helps enormously in the experimental dismembering department!

  7. Was great to see St Ruth and the team at St Albans - Pauline's cakes were as good as ever and the new backscene is looking great. Just a shame we didn't have time to get away from the 2mm stand for long enough to have a play and run the threatened Midland (c.1922) excursion!!

As for the Dapol Western. Getting the wheels to 2FS standards is a simple turning job, the difficulty is getting the wheels out without doing any damage - they are a very tight fit - and then getting them back in. As usual Missy Julia took one look at the problem and suggested a solution that I'm pretty confident will work. I'll report back once I've had a chance to give it a go.
