Don't I know it, got a hire car while mine is having the side resprayed after some clown drove into it. Not a bad car but seems huge with massive amounts of metal and a rear window like a letterbox

A friend of ours who succumbed to a brain tumour in his early 40s over 20 years ago had that. In my opinion not so bad in later years but early 40s with two still quite young kids......? Don't want anything downbeat at mine, that's really gonna cheese the other half. She doesn't like Planet Rock as it is. No real choices yet to be honest, although Thunderstruck does appeal, as does Poison by Alice Cooper if only because it is a personal favourite of a very dear friend. Not intending falling off my perch yet, had a heart attack 8 years ago on Tuesday and going to a colleague's funeral on Wednesday. He had one a year before me then several more before dying in his sleep on new Year's Eve. Didn't follow the advice given to be honest, he was rather 'old school' be interesting whether he'd arranged anything or it's been left to his brother, he never married.

Alternatives to Hornby motors
great central replied to mikesndbs's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Speaking for myself I hope not, I've got a good few locos bought over the last few years towards a club project, which, if I'm honest, the progress is little more than glacial so might never be needed. Not taken many of them out of the boxes even. As I've managed to strip the gears on my last two kit builds I'm getting more than a little pee'd off with model railways in general. This kind of thing does nothing to help me keep on going. I've got Lima motors from about 40 years ago now which still run very well and reliably, AND can be repaired with the minimum fuss if anything is needed:-) -

Seeing the name above the windscreen brought back memories of seeing a similar vehicle converted into a stock car transporter in the mid 70s for Wilf Blundell. -
50 Years since the end of BR Steam!

In the top picture one of the ex ER 9Fs was, I believe,92091, the first loco I remember seeing while at Nottingham Victoria with my dad about 1957, I was 4. It made quite an impression on me swinging alongside platform 7 with a freight, almost certainly heading for Woodford Halse. Saw it many times in the intervening years on the GC, only to lose it when Annesley shed closed and it was transferred away. Next saw it as above at Carnforth withdrawn and cold, quite a shock to the system even for someone who'd seen the GC die a lingering death. But then there were other things taking over my interests then as would be expected of a teenager. -
Towards the bottom of this page: http://www.annesleyfireman.com/index.html there's mention and a photo of 60847 (nameplates having been removed by now) being prepared as a standby in case of failure of the big red thing borrowed from the dark side for a railtour in 1964

Nottingham station fire
great central replied to beast66606's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
Only trains that can really avoid Nottingham are the longer distance ones. London to Derby and Sheffield or Liverpool-Norwich, everything else either passes through or terminates. Same applies to Derby and Leicester, long diversion and buses to connect. -

We do have both empty stock and service trains which take diversion routes for route knowledge purposes, as do XC and Northern to my knowledge. -
Chiltern Model Railway Exhibition - Stevenage 13/14 Jan 2018
great central replied to adrianmc's topic in Exhibitions
Hope the organisers don't mind me pointing out an error in the guide? It shows Ally Pally exhibition as being on the 16th and 17th March, as does the MRC ad also in the guide. According to the pinned thread at the top of the exhibtions page it's 24rd and 25th March. Might be worth putting a note somewhere about it? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/129277-the-london-festival-of-railway-modelling-ally-pally-24-to-25-march-2018/ -

Fully reopened to trains now. Some facilities not available due to fire damage. Normal train service from tomorrow -
Nottingham station fire

I think a simple search on EMT website or other social media would have found the answer to your comment. Ticket restrictions lifted and travel by pretty much any operator and route!!! Tickets also valid tomorrow or available for refund, even non-refundable ones due to the serious nature of the disruption. Some people are very quick to condemn things on social media yet a simple search on the very same platforms (!) can show their condemnation is at best ill judged. The railway and businesses around Nottingham station have pulled together magnificently today in my experience, not to mention the emergency services for a prompt response which limited, although serious, the damage. -
Last year while rooting around in the freezer for something to eat I found a pot of mushroom sauce. That'd go nicely with whatever else I had so out it came. Into the microwave to thaw and heat up, done carefully and thoroughly. Enjoyed the meal and when looking again realised the label on the pot said Safeway........... No ill effects

Modelling mojo and state of mind
great central replied to Coldgunner's topic in Modelling musings & miscellany
Ah OK, sorry to hear that but you're probably right to let it go unless it's something you really cherish beyond the monetary value. Hope you can find something to replace it -

Don't know whether it helps but you can elect to keep your car and they subtract the (perceived) value from any cash settlement. Someone drove into my side door last week, minor dent and scratches. Insurance could still write off due to value of car, waiting to hear. Son had his perfectly good car taken away when he could have repaired it himself for not a lot of money. Similar thing happened to a friend who slightly bent his LR Discovery, he managed to get it back, cost about £300 to repair using S/H parts. -
As I understand it, behind the lion and wheel emblem was still green. The loco having been painted blue around it. Who knows why, maybe no arrows of indecision in stock?

Hi Willie, I hope Tony doesn't mind a minor hi-jack of his thread but talking Trent Lane Junction, I presume you're aware of our club layout of the area? I think I may have mentioned it to you before, memory not what it was (according to my wife it was never any good just getting worse ). Some pictures here; http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/74756-nottingham-model-railway-society/ Progress isn't anywhere near as fast as we would like but you'd be welcome to come and have a look and chat over a cuppa on any clubnight.

Bachmann Wheel Centre woes
great central replied to Hotspurworks's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Although Replica first released the B1, if I remember correctly a conversation I had while working at the Palitoy warehouse around 1984-5 development was started either by Airfix before their takeover or Palitoy for the Mainline range, test models having been running in their R & D department. All of the Replica ones had a slip acknowledging the assistance provided by Bachmann so maybe presume they manufactured them? Edit: Replica also released their version of the STD 4. Also I seem to recall they did the GWR 0-6-2T as well, could be wrong on that so happy to bow to greater knowledge -
Bachmann Wheel Centre woes
great central replied to Hotspurworks's topic in Modelling Questions, Help and Tips
Simplest and cheapest answer is just remove the plastic inserts and paint the wheels black. Addition of a plasticard balance weight improves the appearance, or you should be able to salvage the one from the insert. This problem afflicted B1s and Std4s from about the same time, same wheels (?). When running they don't look half bad in my opinion. I have one that's not too bad and simply attacked the swollen insert with a craft knife, carefully, until it cleared the rods. -
It wouldn't surprise me if a good number of those bemoaning the different wages in the workplace (at the lower end obviously) spend a good amount of their low wages watching football, and even spending a lot of their meagre income on doing so. Something I seriously cannot fathom out

Really can't be bothered with this kind of politics of envy. Yes I would like to have more cash, paying a mortgage until I'm 70, but I don't get consumed by fake outrage about what other people earn. There's quite lot, some on here would happily do away with my job tomorrow if they could. They think I'm overpaid and underworked in the job I do.

Yeah but for those of us at the front line just another day, often with extra numpties for good measure. Cos it's a bank holiday of course but trains are still expected to run as normal:-)

There's a Lettsby Avenue inside the shopping centre in Grantham, no idea if it appears on maps but very much doubt it

Prototype for everything corner.
great central replied to jonny777's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
No picture but on Saturday just after leaving Grantham southbound I passed an East Coast set, nothing unusual there, but there was a 91 blunt end outward tagged on the back complete with flashing tail lamp -

Pretty much all of Nottingham City Transport's fleet until the advent of the current type of registration numbers had matching fleet and reg numbers. The 1950s Leyland Titans would have been quite valuable by now I suspect. Also saw on an advert some years ago someone selling a reg no PAU1xxR I think which was originally on an Atlantean if I recall correctly -
Toy fair £5 early enterance fee
great central replied to locomad's topic in Modelling musings & miscellany
Common at most swapmeets I believe. Usually quoted as 'normal' price at advertised opening time with extra as an early bird entry. Pays yer money, etc
