  1. after a lot of concentration, I have hand painted the window frames.  A very tedious job but it needed to be done.  Have also touched up a few areas of white paint - not the greatest match but it will do.  Very pleased with the outcome and hopefully have another couple of TSOs on their way!

  2. Decided to go for it with the other four coaches.  A few issues but nothing that can't be sorted out.

First two photos after three coats of blue but before correcting.  Second two show the after effects of a cotton bud, kebab stick, some white spirit and a sheet of kitchen towel!  Will sort out the other issues by adding some white paint.

  3. Evening all,

One job I have been meaning to do for a while is repainting a Bachmann mark 2a rake, changing the blue to a lighter shade.  Whilst I agree that a handful were painted with the darker shade of blue, the majority carried the lighter blue right until the end.

Getting hold of coaches hasn't been easy, I currently have 3 TSO's and have recently taken delivery of a couple of cheap Hattons BFKs.  Plan is to have a rake of 7, I have a couple of blue/grey TSOs that I will use until I can source another couple in NSE.

Thanks to information from Temeraire, armed with a can of Ford Monza blue, I have attempted to spray one of the TSOs.  The results are shown below and also compared with RTR Mk1, Mk2 and class 50 to compare.

Yes there is a little bleeding which I will sort out but I am pretty happy with the outcome.  It's interesting to see how much more yellow, the white on the mark 2 is compared to the mark 1.

  4. I've promised to paint an HST pink for my daughter who decided she would like her own train.  I haven't managed to find any Railmatch pink though!

  5. If your set is as original it may well be worth more.  I guess that FGW has such a large network that they are desirable.  I must admit, I will miss it even if my son is not that bothered about it.

Now I wonder what his FGW Turbo is worth...

  6. How much will this go for?

Well, it finished last night at a whopping £470.  My son is absolutely delighted and he has his eyes on spending it already.  He has been looking at the possibility of getting a sound engine though I don't want him to rush into anything.

Interestingly, one of the high bidders (that didn't win) appeared to be a trader of high priced items.  He had, for instance, recently sold a few FGW coaches at around the £70 mark as well as some Bachmann NSE 2EPB's at around £200.  It surprised me that he would be bidding on a 'not mint' HST.

I hope the new owner gets as much enjoyment out of the HST as my son did for around 4 years.

  7. I know, my eyes popped out when I saw the prices increase.  Interestingly the highest bidder looks like a trader - certainly his for sale listings are eyewatering (it's not gostude by the way).

  8. Just a heads up, Jon. Have you looked into using Parcel Force to ship this?

I only ask as my Mrs uses it to post Equine Saddles occasionally. Due to the value of these, some in the region of 6 to 800 pounds each and the weight of them, she can get them shipped with full insurance and proper tracking for about £25. A saddle must 5 times the weight of that HST set!

I haven't.  I'm a bit reluctant to use a service that collects from home as we are frequently out.  I Can you drop them off at the post office?

My plan was to get 2kg worth of stock into a parcel and send it special delivery (about £11) with the remainder going as a small parcel recorded delivery (about £4).

  9. How much will this go for?

It's my auction.  My son saw a Piko digital set that he just had to have.  We discussed that he would have to sell something to pay for it and the HST was chosen as he doesn't tend to run it much.

I don't think it will go crazy as the set is not mint.

It's taken 354 pages for me to appear on Ebay Madness!

  10. I couldn't find a varnish spray but I did find a bottle of matt varnish which I have coated over the glossy brown paint.  It has 'dulled down' the glossiness significantly.  I have also sprayed the roof dark grey.  It could probably do with another spray - have realised that I need to remove the guard lookout which i'll do before respraying.

Couldn't resist making a short boat train with 1500 and 9005 at the back.

  11. I might have to use a different number as it looks like 1549 only carried the version of the livery with a black stripe separating the orange and beige.  Just checked 1500 which appeared to carry both (which is a relief!)

I must have used a different brown on 1500 and the MLV as the colour appears much less glossy.

Ian, I seem to think that Jaffa continued for some time, complete with NSE branding.  I'm not sure why apart from to maybe keep sets in a uniform colour (not much use when coupled to a VEP!)

  12. Right!  A few updates.  After careful thought, I decided not to continue with the EPB.  This has been sold to another RMwebber who will hopefully finish off the job.

In terms of the CEP, I have spent a bit of time fitting the hopper window frames to the DMSO's.  I had tried this a couple of months ago on one vehicle using some Poly Cement (as it was the only thing I had in the house).  It appeared to stick nicely but once it had dried the frames pinged off easily.  After a visit to a hardware store earlier, I have come home with some very runny superglue that comes with its own brush to paint it on.

I have gone for double gluing am happy with the outcome.   Poly cement has been used to initially glue the frames to the bodysides.  Once this has dried I have painted on superglue to the inside strengthening the bond between the two materials.  It appears to have done the job without me doing my usual of getting glue everywhere.

The photos show the outcome (and highlight the glossiness of the brown paint I used!)  Comments welcome!

  13. In terms of a chassis for a 3H, a CEP trailer coach may do the trick as it should (in theory) be wired correctly.  Using a Replica suburban body or cut n shut EPB shells could be placed on top.

It is a shame, I quite fancied a thumper when it was announced but delays, lack of centre cars and availability of EPBs at a much lower price has removed any need for one.  It does frustrate me a little waiting for a 2HAP to be announced.  I'd love to get my hands on a couple of Thumper trailer bodyshells to swap for an EPB one.
