  3. Woo, fame at last! Spotted myself twice in those two vids. First video at 3:00 - leading verandah of the second car. I'm the one closest to the camera. Second video at 9:48 - hanging off the back. Matt.
  4. Yep, that sounds about right for Queensland! This is probably the closest they've ever been to running together. Matt.
  5. Now that you mention it, I do remember reading Perry on the smokebox door, and you can just make it out in the image!
  6. You'll keep! See here. It's still in kit from though.
  7. Can't speak for the Garratt in Canberra, but the shots I posted were taken at the Workshops Railway Museum in Ipswich, QLD. The first lot are in the museum and the second lot are in the workshop area, which can usually be seen by taking one of the guided workshops tours. Matt. (edit: Mike beat me to it!)
  8. Last Saturday, BB18 1/4 No. 1079 hauled a tour train from the Workshops to Laidley, for the Spring Festival. There was also a short trip from Laidley to Gatton and back, probably more for the benefit of Laidley and surrounding residents, who don't usually get a chance to ride on heritage trains. There's not too many from the return trip because I was actually quite tired and couldn't be bothered! Racing along somewhere after Rosewood Climbing the Little Range What's left of Yarongmulu Looking back down the train Coming into Laidley Me trying to be clever, can't remember what I was trying though... At Laidley This one would've been better if the safety spot on the bridge wasn't in the way Took a few attempts to get this Refilling the water tank at Forrest Hill Taken while taking on water Looking back down the train through the ducket in the lead guards van The train at Gatton, minus loco which is off in the distance running around Running around. Fired the camera just a bit too early for this one Coupled back up The Great Dividing Range Grain silos at Forrest Hill Grandchester, formerly Bigges's Camp. I missed it on the way to Laidley because I was inside handing out flyers Out of Gauge wire for container trains heading up through the tunnels on the ranges What's left of the turntable at Rosewood Ipswich signal box Turntable at Ipswich Matt
  9. It got very quiet last time I was at the Workshops Museum, so after I'd finished on the model, I went for a walk around and took a few pics of some of the exhibits. PB15 No. 444 1250 Class No. 1262, set up as a cut-away to show the inner workings of a diesel 1270 Class No. 1281, named 'Century' but the plates have been removed. This is one of two QR diesels painted in the special gold livery to celebrate the railways centenary in 1965, the other being No. 1461, named 'Centennial' of the 1460 Class. QR is looking to return one of the two to working order, and even though 1281 is part of the Museum collection, it is better suited to being restored than 1461 which is still owned by QR, so the two are likely to trade places. Bundaberg Fowler No. 3 'Flash' Vice Regal car. This is still owned by QR Panhard Railmotor RM14 Two of the coaches from the Great South Pacific Express. These aren't on public display, but can be seen when the doors into the paintshop are open. I also stayed back a bit later so I could get a few pics from inside the the QR part of the workshops. DD17 tank No. 1051 'The Blue Baby', well, bits of it! C17 No. 974, looking a little worse for wear than it does in my avatar AC16 No. 221A BB18 1/4 No. 1079, probably the only working steam loco in the workshops at the moment! A10 No. 6 C17 No. 1000 in bits BB18 1/4 No. 1089 minus tender Wheels of No. 1000, tender of No. 6 and No. 221A C17 tender, possibly No. 1000's, lifted of its' bogies Fairmount section car PB15 No. 732 Diesel engine, not sure what it came from Beyer Garratt No. 1009 1900 Class Railmotor No. 1901 Matt
  10. Comparing the first two overall shots, I think it looks better having a small structure to divide the scene. It also gives a reason for the siding to be there. With regards to the front right corner, what if you were to have the ground rise up to meet the bottom of the steps? However, given how high above the surface of the board the steps finish, if it were me I'd try and extend them down a few more risers before they reach the 'ground'. I'd also partly bury the two existing brick podiums so the contours look more natural. Obviously, this would mean a structure in this corner would look odd, so what if an advertising hoarding was placed there instead? It could be unused or have the remains of an old ad if you didn't want to draw too much attention to it. This would be placed at an angle to the footbridge to hide the hole to the fiddle yard and I think it should direct your vision into the model and away from the 'hole in the sky', or at least distract you from it. Just my thoughts, hope they help. Matt.
  11. Five tequila, six tequila, seven tequila, morgue?
  12. Yesterday while on the second and third Steam Train Sunday trips, I was able to grab a few pics of the QR suburban system around Brissie. One of the original style QR EMU's no. 13 somewhere on the mainline Roma Street from the link/avoiding line to the Exhibition Loop Hole-in-the-Wall at Bowen Hills/Mayne 2413 and 2163 hauling empty Sunlander through the washing plant at Normanby, on the Exhibition Loop Electric Car Sheds at Mayne, showing all three body styles of QR MU's ICE (Intercity Express) no. 153 at Mayne. Note the lines above the passenger windows are still in original colours EMU 26 at Mayne Inside one of the tunnels between Roma Street and Central 2413 and 2163 again hauling Sunlander consist (again!), don't know where to though. This one was taken after they'd been through the washing plant and was made &^%# difficult to get because of all the poles holding up the knitting above the tracks! I have two videos as well, but can only post them once I've remembered how I made the last one! Matt.
  13. Yesterday was the first time I went on a preserved/heritage train that was steam hauled in over a decade! The last time was Puffing Billy in '03 when I got to cab 7A as it ran around at Gembrook. Some of my pics from yesterday (the rest are going in the modern scene thread). All taken from the balcony of the guards van, except the last one, which was just before the train presumably headed to Mayne for the night. There's only one of the whole train and one of the loco because I was helping out as part of the Workshops Railway Museum contingent so not a lot of time for photos, and given the train was running on the suburban lines, I decided not to risk getting clouted by OHLE poles, signals or another train by leaning out too many times! I have a video too, but I won't post it as it's almost exactly the same as the last bit of footage in the video David posted (it's actually even got the guys who shot that video in it). Matt.

  16. How much does a hipster weigh? An instagram hat, coat, gone! Matt.
  17. Cheers, everyone! Plants? Yes. Stoney Creek Falls dam story? Dunno. The plants and gardens at Kuranda station will probably always be there, as they're one of the defining features of the station. As for the story about the dam, I don't recall hearing anything about that, and a quick check on google maps doesn't show any signs of there being a dam above the falls on Stoney Creek. There is a dam before the Barron Falls however, unless that's the one you were referring to. I guess that will depend on the time of year you visit. We were there during the June/July holidays, so in the middle of their dry season. Although, having said that we were told by some locals in Cairns that while it had been dry in the months leading up to our visit, we must have brought the weather up with us from Brissie because it rained for most of our time there! My best guess is that the 1720's used up there won't be replaced, they'll just use the rest of the remaining fleet for spares/replacements as they get withdrawn (provided they aren't sent to South Africa first!). The 1720's were originally bought to remove steam from the suburban network. I think that's why they had the 'quick start' feature; to get away from stations faster. Matt.

  19. A husband was just coming out of anaesthesia after a series of tests in hospital and his wife was sitting at his bedside. His eyes fluttered open and he murmured, "You're beautiful". Flattered, she continued her vigil while he drifted back to sleep. Later he woke up and said, "You're good looking". "What happened to 'beautiful'?" she asked him. "The drugs are wearing off", he replied.
  20. Was going through the old computer the other day and came across these. Taken on the same day as the Kuranda ones I posted a while back. Dad took them on his phone. Probably Horseshoe Bend Stoney Creek Falls bridge Stoney Creek Falls Looking back at the bridge. This angle is similar to some of the more well-known shots of the bridge and falls Tunnel 14. I'm guessing that's 24.690km from Cairns Central station, not 24,690km from Central station in Brisbane! Barron Falls, looking rather barren (sorry!) Kuranda If you're wondering what I'm doing in the second Kuranda photo, I'm freezing my a*se off and getting my phone out to take this at the same time! The reason the quality of the one I took is much worse than the other ones is because I'm still using a nokia 3200 (yes, really!), whereas Dad gets a new phone regularly from his work. Matt.

  22. Right now, 50 years ago, the last ever passenger service is leaving Southport before the closure of the old South Coast Line that ran to the Gold Coast. This year also marks 125 years since the line first opened, on January 25, 1889.

  23. Second attempt! Keeping with the 3801 theme, and because it's 25 years since this happened (links posted because it's not my own content): http://you#tu.be/x#d-PgQu4hBg (take out the two #, I didn't want to embed the video as it's not mine) Image The title of the video is wrong as while Scotsman arrived in '88, the video was shot in '89. I'm not sure of the exact date for these, but others on here might know. Matt.
  24. Edit: post deleted because I'm incompetent Matt.
  25. Can't wait until she's back up and running again! (3801) I'd really like to be on her first passenger carrying run once restored, and failing that, I probably make a roadtrip down south for the next best thing of watching her from the lineside. Matt.
