If you fancy spending more cash, have a look at the Mk1 Design detail sets, expensive but impressive. Hannants sometimes have them at a 30% discount. The mast and radar set is a good investment if you are planning to RC the kit. The armament set for the Rodney, which is slightly different from the Nelson, is on offer at the moment. Enjoy Roddy Ps. Hobby King are very good and are often competitive with prices. However they have a number of warehouses spread around the world and if you order from the wrong one, you may be hit by custom charges. I tend to order from the British or European warehouses where custom charges are not an issue, at least until 31 December for the European one. Some items are only stocked in some warehouses, so you have to search for the best deal/risk for what you want. The page for the item will show where it is available. Most train items only seem to be available in the global warehouse and you should therefore factor in the risks of custom costs being applied when it arrives in the UK. Best wishes Roddy

Some one posted earlier that the deal in WHS only started on the Friday. Similarly in Tesco it started on the Thursday. They also said it was for a limited period. Computerised tills in Tesco and WHS are normally updated centrally, so be polite to staff, it's probably not within their control. From my own experience the offer was not available in Tesco at about 9pm on the Wednesday (January edition of Hornby mag on display), but was available early on Thursday morning with the Febuary mag. Sorry about that, the perils of responding to something to quickly. I've also had a look but can only find the normal door release buttons (9075) but not the emergency door releases. I am wondering if I got mixed up and was thinking of someone else's decals at the time. Precision Labels do door release labels (ref L91A) which you might be able to use. I didn't end up using decals as I realised the Hornby Scotrail Mk2fs had then already printed, it was just difficult to see them in that livery. Sorry once again about the confusion. Thanks for that heads up Signaller, I've never seen that version of the grain wagon before. I do wonder if those wagons were taken over by LGW, as when looking at a train of wagons, one or two are sometimes noticeably not as high as the others, are they perhaps the old Distiller's ones which have been added to the LGW fleet? It would seem odd that LGW would build two different sizes of wagon for their own fleet and the photo you highlight might explain the difference. Thanks once again. Roddy

On the grain wagons, you might be getting these mixed up with the Leith General Warehousing (LGW) or the Robert Hutchison grain wagons. As far as I am aware, Distillers did not have any of these type of grain wagons themselves. Roddy

How about this for a series of articles? There are a number of topics focused around adding train crew to various locomotives but the discussion seems to be based mainly around where can I get suitable steam or diesel train crew. Would it be a good idea for one of the magazines to do a series of articles about what clothes/uniforms would have been worn by train crew and when? During steam days, did everyone just wear filthy overalls, did a BR driver of a class 31 wear a jacket and tie, when did hi-visibility aids become the fashion and are they worn when actually driving, what is the normal dress code of Scotrail, DB, GBRF, DRS etc crew over time? We seem to spend a lot of time focusing on the detail of individual locomotives, but are we prepared to just dump any old figure in the cab? Perhaps one of the magazines could pick up on this idea, or if others on this forum have knowledge of what was worn by whom when, then perhaps they might be willing to share it with others. For instance Big Jim, what do you normally wear when driving, do you wear a tie and jacket, fleece, jumper? If so what colours? I know there are other train crew that are members as well, no offence meant by highlighting Big Jim. I for one would like to know that if I am adding a driver to my GBRF Class 66, what would the driver be wearing. Thanks very much for the reply Ragtag, but I a hoping to get ones which project, like the real ones. The Hornby Scotrail 2fs have the CDLs printed on but they look better with the Hurst replacements, unfortunately I don't have enough for a complete rake. I will probably use the Railtec transfers for the emergency door releases, which are missing on the Hornby models, either straight on the models or using the Hurst etches for relief. Can anyone suggest a source of 00 scale central door locking lights? I am after the basic square amber lights for fitting to Mk2 coaches. Hurst makes them but they are out of stock and, knowing Hurst, it will probably be some time before they are made again, hence the search for an alternative source. Best wishes Roddy
