  1. Bloomingarry Andy. Glad that you were given an OK result and trust that you will take it easy. Dee did the correct thing and I hope that she is OK after the scare that she had. Cheers, Peter
  2. Dishwashers - they are in fact better than the hand-washing hygienically because in drying the temperature goes up to 80oC -don't know how to get the 'o' up to the top. We are on Economy 7 with a good dishwasher with timer like Tony and only do a second run if we have guests so no second runs so far this year! Strange how 'gas' has gone from domestic pressure to wellhead pressure demonstrating the breadth of expertise in ER. Took the two minutes silence today - did lose an uncle in WW2 but all older known uncles survived WW1.
  3. As I understand it the pressure of the gas is provided by electric pumps so potentially gas would also not work.
  4. Strangely we have had the same problem with the same company of late. The previous lady was excellent but ... this last few weeks with someone else ...
  5. Polybear Does anyone prefer an induction hob over a gas hob, out of interest? Absolutely - gas is always a pain apart from its obvious danger. We used to be gas but it is not available in our village so we went electric and a few years ago replaced with an induction hob. It has been absolutely superb as we had saucepans etc. that worked with it. That would be an additional expense bit it is well worth having as control is far better than gas. Hope that helps. Peter
  6. Seems to be that by the time of day one remembers that you were going to ring X,Y or Z it is too late in the evening to do so ... anyway that is my excuse and it has happened this evening as I spent too long on the virtual model railway show. That in itself was very good and informative.
  7. On doorstep at the stated time - seems only one other couple could be observed likewise. That being said it is cold here.
  8. The quality of your platforms comes well into view - the time taken to obtain this was well spent.
  9. Unless you have Hornby track (unlikely) do not use Hornby - they do not fit over Peco point 'sliders'. Gaugemaster also do surface mounted - look a bit bigger than Peco. Forgot, you are running O gauge.
  10. Early 'retirement' from NHS cuts at 53 but had no idea then that 22 years teaching in one way or another would follow - one of the lucky guys who was privileged to enjoy every job he had.
  11. True, and thinking about this has also built 5 of his own only 1 of which has been on the web.
  12. Thanks to Barnaby and yourself. Cadley Hill now has surface point motors that need hiding and I will now see if he same principle can be used on them. Pity about the roof area but health is paramount so a correct decision.
  13. Thanks John - you seem to have hit it fair and square. Peter
  14. This just came up with a previous message thanking Tony and Jamie especially for their help with the fictitious scenario. Singers, as I read I realised that I had never heard of them but eventually Enya and Kate Bush were recognised and finally Ella Fitzgerald - one who I had listened to live from the front row in a concert with Duke Ellington at the Royal Festival Hall. Must be some time ago as I have not lived in London now for well over 50 years. Have to admit to getting a bit fed up of all the politicised criticism of our 'leaders' when the reality is that far too many people have not, do not, and will not take what was clear guidance that remains and are responsible for excess spread of Covid-19 over and above what might be considered 'normal infection rates. I am not without criticism of the scene bearing in mind the complete lack of recognition that IBMS members have the expertise in testing in NHS but that they (we although personally retired) were thought of as a company rather than the NHS professional experts who were ignored while money was spent on 'lighthouse' companies who had no idea ... and of course the problems with T&T that still remain.
  15. George, been able to look through your postings. The quality of your work is tremendous and the end results absolutely amazing. Keep up the good work, cheers, Peter
  16. Many E-numbers are absolute essentials but over time E-numbers have been vilified by incorrect generalisations and prejudice.
  17. Hi Guys, Things have been hectic, so I have not been active for a week or two and trust that ‘all is well’ in the realms of ER. I would appreciate your advice on a ‘fictitious’ scenario. Stock has been left languishing for a number of years after a former member moved without a forwarding address and was unable or unwilling to remove said stock. It is understood that a reminder was sent to his last recorded address stating that the club would not take any responsibility for its safety although a copy has not been located. A number of emails have been sent over time to a recorded known email address of that time again asking for the stock to be removed but no response has been received, neither has there been a return as ‘undeliverable’. A few months ago, a mobile number was found, and a positive answer obtained from a recognised voice when tried but while accepting that stock was still present no confirmation that a removal would be planned was received. A follow-up a few weeks later lad to an angry reply and telephone put down. In the meantime, a copy of the itemised stock was also sent by email and a further call was made three weeks later that elicited ‘number unobtainable’. The 'committee of the fictitious club' are of the opinion that it is now time to take ownership of said stock and seek advice on the best way to assure the pick-up or to make the opinion a legally viable option. It is probably unlikely that the 'fictitious' person is on the web but if 'they are' and read this, it is hoped that they make relevant steps to recover said stock.
  18. Rabbit was always our Saturday dinner. During the rugby season it was come home from school at noon, eat and go back for rugby therefore missed if it was an away game. I remember it fondly with lentils and barley and, for those of you who know, edible.
  19. John, Your blog has been inspiring in the love and care that it demonstrates and Sandy a truly loving companion. Maybe some day when you retire you will take your next dog to Wells and remind Sandy that you also remembered 'some other day'. Thoughts are with you. Peter
  20. Bomb sites - yes, they were our 'plaything' ... that has led to a rebuilding observation - the cry of 'petrol' went up and a whole garden flashed flame. Rationing - can you imagine a primary school child having the ration books and going from school at 3.30pm (no 24 hour clock used the) to the grocers to purchase the weeks supply of food and then carrying it home? No need for imagination - fact, that was one of my weekly 'duties'. Worse car drive - clutch gone and brakes failed going downhill in Croydon trying to stop at a red traffic light ... handbrake pulled so hard I was not strong enough to release it later, crunched into reverse and then glad that I belonged to the AA. Cannot comment on wines and food the first no thanks and the latter in restaurants for me is normally unpalatable. Thanks to John of Coombe ... had my shingles vaccination today.
  21. Trolleybuses. Used to use the one on the A3 long before motorway status to Tolworth after getting off the 152. I have photographs (35mm slides somewhere) of the last London trolleybus as it left Wimbledon Town Hall for Kingston. Never driven on the continent but many years ago did navigate one of the coaches when the Red Cross took a large number of people with disabilities on a holiday that included a trip on the Henri Dunant vessel in Holland. We had 19 hour days supporting them but it was so rewarding from the reactions of those who had had no chance of a holiday for a number of years.
  22. Heathrow Two thoughts - a trip with a local party circa 1951 and a guided coach tour round the airport and if you could afford a fiver a view from a small aircraft ... some of those present paid the money. Refreshments e.g. sandwiches etc. 'Bayley's' provided these to the early travellers and staff and, unlike today, if sandwiches were not all eaten they were taken home, put in the fridge and put out for sale on the following day.
  23. But what are SWMBOs for ... if you want Brownie points!
  24. Its sometimes a bit of a pain to find the right place but old 'clothing' material is recyclable.
