  1. How are the car carrying wagons on the channel tunnel shuttles designed to control vehicle fires? Couldn't some of the systems form them be adapted.
  2. i have a couple of these wagons which are usually included within engineers trains, however just before Christmas I had a sudden moment of inspiration and decided to add a load to one. the load consists of a Matchbox Caterpillar D8 dozer, with a little extra detail and better tracks fitted and then chained onto the wagon.
  3. If the way forward for vehicles is to have battery powered cars with charging points, surely sprinklers is not really a good idea. I was always taught NEVER mix water and electric so it would have to have something like CO2 jets, or some form of sealable sections which can be either pumped full of extinguisher or all the oxygen removed thus supressing a fire.
  4. There was a large car park fire in Liverpool last night, luckily nobody appears to have been injured. Many vehicles were burnt out and the fire services have done a good job in controlling and fighting the extensive fire, however in these modern times there should be a way to make this sort of incident less damaging such as built in fire suppression equipment. I understand that in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower disaster priority must go to sorting fire safety within high rise housing, but surely we should review fire safety inside all public buildings.
  5. Having spent several years off the circuit sat at home feeling sorry for myself licking my wounds, this year is time to turn things round, pick myself up and get back in the game. So get out to some shows Start my new layout Start rebuilding the stock roster Make some new friends from RMWEB (in person at shows)
  6. A nice cold bottle of Black Sheep or 2 all the best for 2018
  7. Yes there were several different sizes on the Southern pride sprue to allow for different bogies and clearances, quite useful.
  8. If you want to use Bachmann bogies I would use brass nuts and bolts and space it using washers, epoxy the nut inside the van and put the bolt through the pivot hole on the bogie then use 3 or 4 washers to space the bogie, once your happy with how the van rides and the bogies swing easily and don't foul the chassis then secure the bolt in position from inside the van. leave the van roof of for a couple of days so the vapour from any glue doesn't frost the glazing. Another possible option would be to use Replica railways bogies.
  9. Its that time of the year when you can find alternative sources for detailing rolling stock and tracksides. After all the presents and packaging and party food and drink, you can find plenty of card, acetate (for glazing), plastic bottle stoppers (spray painted red oxide make great industrial castings), the ribbons used to wrap presents can be cut up and used to make ratchet or tie down straps on wagon loads. If you think outside the box you will find all sorts of bits and pieces and best of all have fun.
  10. May be a daft idea but have you tried contacting the NYMR to see if they have any photos and info in there archives and also you could try the NRM archives at York.
  11. Now that's what I'd call overkill, much easier with a hotwire tool and at least everyone else in the room doesn't need ear defenders or face mask, not to mention HSE training for safe use and handling.
  12. Have you checked that the wheels run true and the back to back gauge is correct as if it was out the wheels could foul on the point work .
  13. Makes you wonder just what the youths of today have learnt about respecting other peoples property. If they catch the scum they will only get a slapped wrist.
  14. | didn't think there was a flush glaze pack done for the class 90 and personaly I'd use the original glazing and with a little bit of work it can be improved.
  15. The main area that shows up the extra width of the Heljan 47 is over the bogies as the body overhangs, the bogies being narrower then stand out. The Bachmann 47s have much better lighting fitted however the red LEDs are a little to bright.
  16. I don't find the coupling an issue the bigger issue is the oversize high intensity head light.
  17. I have a suggestion for all diecast manufactuers, following on from the introduction of seated passengers within units and coaches could we now start to see drivers and passengers in road vehicles as the vast majority of vehicles seen on layouts are obviously driven by ghosts. It is one of my biggest bugbears when looking at layouts, we spend hours trying to make them look right and then when you see vehicles on roads theres no one in them.
  18. Some nice new models, now I'll have to try and find some extra housework to do to earn the extra brownie points from SWMBO so I can spend on some. Nice to see passengers now being included in passenger stock, now we need drivers and passengers in some of the road vehicles.
  19. I remember seeing 91003 leaving Leeds blunt end first, coupled to a mk1 generator coach and a set of mk1 charter coaches back in the early 90s. They also turned up coupled up pointed end to DVT (having had the coaching set turned around) occasionally in the early days due to TDM problems.
  20. The majority of trains I've travelled on are relatively easy to model being class 91 & mk4s class 158 class 156 class 150 class 144 class 142 only 2 types of unit that have not been made as a rtr model yet (of a type that I've travelled on) class 185 and class 141
  21. Whilst I like my solitude there are times when I get lonely, SWMBO works nights so spends her days in bed. As our 3 girls live with there grand parents for reasons I will not get into now, it is this time of year that really feels lonely. Friends we regularly used to see no longer call as they don't know how to treat us.
  22. If you don't fancy using a flame you could use transparent or coloured plastic rods as well as pieces of waste sprue, place them in a mini drill and then use a fine grit sand paper and gently hold it onto the end to form the neck. If you want to make it look like a bottle top put a spot of paint on the tip. You can make plates easily using thin plastic sheet and a hole punch.
  23. If you go onto Google images then put "British rail mk1 generator coach" into the search box and you should find several useful pictures which may be helpful
  24. Have you tried looking on Google images. I looked earlier and found several photos including a photo of both sides of ADB975325 in blue grey livery.
  25. I would like to see a class 58 with a well detailed cab interior, correctly working day and night lights, rotating fans and opening cab doors, sound would be nice but smoke is an issue as it just doesn't flow correctly. It would need some serious electronics to give the correct exhaust clouds. Next would be the class 45 in the final years with sealed beam marker lights and high intensity headlight, you could use smoke on this for the steam heated locos and have it escape under the nose ends, again a rotating fan would be nice and opening cab doors. An modern standard model of a class 110 would be nice with lighting and passengers/train crew. And something totally new, a tamper. Plasser 08/16 or 08/32 with lights, sound and crew would be perfect
