    Hornby D16/3

The Hornby website must have been updated in the last few days, as all versions of the D16 are now showing as expected 17th September. This follows the Crosti, which was expected this week, apparently put back to mid August. Helps my wallet, as having just had the Heljan Class 05 Eastern Region models come out earlier than I expected (ahead of the first announced Scottish Region versions) it needs a breather.
  2. It's interesting that the models released, according to Invicta Models, are the later announced by Heljan, North Eastern Region versions. They seem to have leapfrogged the Scottish Region versions
  3. No more Doors or Neil Young music on the BBC as those artists withdrew from MCPS who distribute rights on downloads/plays. Riders of the Storm LA Woman

  4. I've ordered exactly the same mix. From the early ep examples I'm hoping that the individual loco prototype differences in the 3 'Lyme Billies' will be modelled. It's looking positive, and waiting for the livery version Oxford model photos to see the individual detail.
  5. David, as far as I can see, the umber on these is the same as other recent Hornby Pullman models, I've compared it to the Brighton Belle, early 60s model and the Bournemouth Belle 3 axle bogie types and it is the same shade. The cream colour is less yellow (paler) than the latest Brighton Belle (1960s version), but is the same shade as the Bournemouth Belle 3 axle bogie types from the 1950s set. The roof is off white/ivory, rather than white. I will probably paint the roof mid grey to match my other 1950s stock.
  6. Wouldn't the named coaches be suitable up until 1960, as the crest is the pre 1960 version and afaik the scrolls for the names remained the same. The 'Third Class' coaches would not be suitable post 1955 approx, when BR removed the 'Third Class' from the coaches leaving them as 'Car No --', but I'm hoping that 'Agatha' and 'Loraine' are suitable for BR up till 1960 period. Grateful for advice.
  7. Ian, I would think that it is a later drawing and not one of the ones used in the original r&d, as Hornby first showed this model at EP stage, in early January 2014, only 3 weeks after it was announced. To be at that stage at that time indicates design work throughout 2013 and probably earlier.
  8. You'll need to apply Rule 1 to mix some of these latest coaches with your other stock, as the unnamed coaches carry 'Third Class' side markings, fixing them to the 1930s to mid 1950s, when BR changed third class to second class. For that reason I'm hoping Hornby release the later markings in the next run, similarly to the second version of the Brighton Belle.
  9. I have D817 Foxhound in maroon- Bachmann 32-050, which has crew at both ends, which is the only one of my three 42s that has this. Probably a production issue
  10. Correct, however the Hornby website is saying that the late BR and Southern Railway liveries are expected to arrive at Hornby today, 23 June, so not long to wait
  11. The difference is that this is not a Kickstarter project, it is being sourced by investors with funds held in trust by Kernow Model Rail, who release funds to DJM as they are satisfied that specified milestones in the R&D have been completed. The return for investors is a completed model, if they maintain their investment.
  12. This post, relating to the financial arrangements for the funding of the Class 71 project, is completely incorrect and defeats the assertion made as a result. The payments made by the investors are fully refundable at any stage up until the models are ready for despatch, so DJM does not have a 'captive' audience and risks losing funds below the level of their investment if investors decide to back out. This is all covered in the Project material on the Kernow Models website, which is easily looked up . Further, DJM has not yet completed the crowd sourcing final target, but it has achieved a level to enable development of the model to take place. Finally, the intention was to have a later production run of models with different running numbers, to be sold via normal retail means, which would be the potential profit return on the tooling for DJM. So DJM have every reason to wish to keep aspects of their model away from a competitor producing the same model, as they hope to be able to sell a later run of their model to those who have not taken part in the crowd sourcing, where any technical or scale superiority could be an advantage in capturing sales.
  13. At the moment they've only listed one livery, but with Hornby's previous practice on coaches I would expect there to be pre nationalisation and post nationalisation livery versions in the first release year. As far as I can recall, all other pre nationalisation coaches that Hornby have produced, have been issued in 2 liveries to cover a post nationalisation option, in the first year of release, even the Hawksworth, despite few receiving GWR livery. The only coaches that didn't follow that pattern were the Pullmans, as the overall colour scheme remained the same.
  14. Just received the link to these from Hornby. I think the description given of the Diag 98 6 compartment lav third is incorrect, as the link to the model sample shows it to be a brake coach with end duckets and a guards/stowage area with double doors, the panelling between the compartments differs in width so I think it is a six compartment lav brake composite, which would tie in with the two brake coaches seen in the Adams Radial video late last week, the other being the Diag 99 8 comp brake third. Another 4 coaches and suburbans at that for country line use, this is impressive from Hornby. 9 new coaches announced for 2016 already, can there be anymore? am I in heaven?
  15. Big assumption made that Hornby are going to be first to market with this model. Although they are ahead in terms of R&D, it doesn't mean they will get their model into production before DJM. Recent history has shown that for motorised models, Hornby still has significant production delay problems, with all but one of their new motorised models from 2014 being significantly delayed, well after final EPs were shown, with 3 still outstanding and still being put back later into 2015. Bearing in mind Hornby pre advised this model, as a 2016 catalogue item, are they going to try and leapfrog it into 2015, even if they could, with such a significant back catalogue issue. The announcements already made by DJM on the samples of the CAD drawings and the technical specification are already more detailed than Hornby has released about their model, we know little if anything about the Hornby models motor system or electronics; lighting;pantograph;cab layout;DCC sound capability etc etc. As someone who has invested in this model with DJM I am very pleased with the progress and the detail supplied about its spec, which is sufficient to keep me interested and with the belief on information supplied so far, that it will be technically superior to the rival model. We should also remember that one of the key technical parts of all DJM models, announced at the beginning of the business, was to have circuit boards designed in the UK and manufactured in Japan, rather than Chinese manufactured, in order to mitigate the level of failures that have occurred previously. Dave is wise to keep back some details of his model, as the other manufacturer is still only at first EP stage, which enables them to change the tools or technical spec of the model without serious cost. But at the end of the day, we still know a significant amount more about the proposed features of the DJM model than we do about the Hornby model.
  16. I don't see how anyone can criticise the frequency or extent of Kernow's updates on their commissioned models progress. These appear when there is progress to report. I posted less than a month ago details of the updates given by Chris Trerise in the January BRM. Like others I receive the Kernow weekly newsletter and this gives updates on progress, when there is progress to report. I fail to see the logic of having regular period updates which say,'no further progress' or similar. It should be quite obvious that this model has been significantly delayed by two main factors beyond Kernow's control, the first being that the original commissioned company did not progress the CAD drawings and the development had to be moved elsewhere, the second was that without access to a preserved prototype, and probably a lack of full drawings (similar to other North British designed diesels) a decision was made to use a 1/32 scale model, being built by a professional model maker, as the master for scanning into 'oo' gauge. This meant having to wait until that model maker finished his work. Updates on progress made with the master model were posted on Kernows website and in the weekly newsletter, culminating in the finished model being sent to Hong Kong for scanning and CAD design work earlier this year. With these delays, the model also slipped back in order of potential production, with other commissioned models having CAD work completed. I don't know Kernow's financial position, but can summise that as a model shop investing in production of a range of models, they need to get returns on that investment before going on to the significant expense of a new set of tools, which cost tens of thousands of pounds. Currently Kernow have invested in tooling for the O2 loco and the Gate Stock coaches, with no income yet from those models. My logic indicates to me that they need income from that investment before they can invest in tooling for the next models, bearing in mind they have also contracted Bachmann to produce further versions of the Thumper diesels, which again have not yet received any income on that second batch. I have a D600 on order, I also have a 10203 diesel on order, which Chris has said is still needing further prototype drawings. It is not life or death, I would like those models, but I realise the situation and apply logic. I also have the benefit of the updates that Kernow provide, and know realistically that it is unlikely that another manufacturer would try and produce these models due to their limited range and liveries
  17. Dave, this is looking very impressive. Normally, close photography of models, like the images that Andy has taken in his usual excellent quality, can be very cruel, highlighting minor flaws, but in this case they only allow us to see all the additional detail. For me the cab floor was a knockout, with the planking and 'rough' finish effect, the inside metalwork for the circular cab windows and the buffer beam supports from the chassis, the saddle tank supports under the tank to the cab front and smokebox collar, all sublime. The close up photo of the cab, taken side on, makes you think you could step into it in 1:1. This will be a superb model, correction - is a superb model and I'm looking forward to my BR livery versions from the standard range and the Hattons special. You say in the video that you've added the Giesl ejector option, that's going to extend the options for this model, as the Giesl versions have had to be after purchase conversions up till now.
  18. Don't be fooled, it's just a mirage put out by Kernow/DJM, which will disappear into vapour, or it will if you believe some people. Another positive step, heard from Chris's update that the Gate Stock were in tooling, but to get the first mould samples is unexpected. Another step towards my two sets in BR crimson and green. Well done Kernow/DJM, now about that 10203 diesel.
  19. Started a Class 121 trailer build using Lima 117 power car and centre car, plus Silver Fox 117DMS conversion parts. Thanks to previous posts was able to confirm these did not have corridor connections when built.

  20. Hi I've sent you a pm about a shop that may still have stock and does website and telephone mail order.
  21. County of Yorkshire" 3) Hornby obviously belive that catering vehicles don't sell, hence no retool of the venerable H33 restaurant car. 4) As previously stated, it's a bit of a shame they couldn't stretch to an E128 brake composite. and give this carriage range the same breadth that the Maunsell range benefits from. Can we all try to petition Hornby to include the E128 before the final tooling is cut?! Hornby have a history of producing additional coach types for the super detailed ranges introduced since 2000. The Gresley, Maunsell and Hawksworth corridor ranges all had additional types added after the original models were produced, particularly so with the Maunsells, so there is always the possibility of additional types, although sadly I agree unlikely to be catering types. I managed to produce a Maunsell catering vehicle by using Ian Kirk kit sides and a Hornby Maunsell donor vehicle with sides cut out and roof sanded of detail.
  22. The final coach of the planned run of 6 types, 57ft Brake Third, has now arrived at retailers, picked mine up this afternoon. Livery and detail seem to be on par with the other 5 earlier issues, as well as the same bogie issues, with the leading wheels being too slack due to the open end and the overall buffer height being a tad low. I have the plasticard fillets ready, as per Coachman's adaption last year.
  23. Kernow Models is now showing the LBSC E4 with 3 of the 4 Modified Halls and the Brake Third Porthole coach and the Shakespeare set with Collett Hall as in stock. Was updated this afternoon. Looks like the shipment has arrived. Should also include the grain hoppers.
  24. Kernow Models is now showing the LBSC E4 with 3 of the 4 Modified Halls and the Brake Third Porthole coach as in stock. Was updated this afternoon
  25. Hornby magazine, June edition, shows a picture of what seems to be the final engineering sample, decorated. It incorporates changes to the tooling, described as rivets on the curved top and newly tooled Gresley bogies. This EP also doubles as the first decorated sample, in green with small yellow ends. The other livery sample models are expected over the coming weeks. No date for availability is advised yet. There is only a side view, so not possible to see if the body has the side tumblehome for this version, but no reason to believe it doesn't as they've taken the decision to retool the bogies.
