  1. Can I just confirm this is how my one will look please?
  2. I've gone for OOS71-001 E5003 BR GREEN SMALL YELLOW WARNING PANEL but have to say I also like the all green in the pic above. I'd also be grateful form dates in traffic clarification and a nice colour pic of a 71 as I have ordered it, if anyone can help? Thanks
  3. Looking forward to the updates on this model! really need a 71 in my collection

    Hornby P2

Hi, I did it over two videos that should cover it all.

New motor arrived from Hornby, maybe 90% better than the first but still not where near as good as the Hornby 5 pole that I fitted. I'll keep this as a spare I think. Very interesting topic.

I do not accept that fitting the 'already in stock' 5 pole motor that works well would have added any cost at all at source! Mere pence between the two at the manufacturing level. But, lets give them a chance to make this right.

Totally agree with you Keith, Hornby have indeed let themselves down with this one. And before anyone rushes to their defence! we are all entitled to our opinions and mine is now set on this. A Hejan - Clayton or Bachmann 4MT offer of a new 'good' motor 3 ot 5 pole and free work for those that need it would restore respect. They chose to fit these unreliable 10 a penny motors, Bachmann have been using 3 pole for years with no issue so there was nothing to fear from the advice that the P2 was so equipped.

Thanks, as an update Hornby have now responded to my initial request about this. I am sending the old motor back to them for testing and they are sending a new one back. Will be interesting to see how it performs as the inadequacies of the old one were very clear! Probably stick with the new one I fitted all the same. As for flywheels, Dave Cleal rejected my order for a flywheel as someone who made them has died!

Any news on the tender pick ups? I think this might be a more simple option than adding flywheels etc? Can't find any parts for it however.

Oh, I'd prefer to get a new flywheel, which one would be right?

    Hornby P2

I tried tonight, got it very hot using a flame and it would not budge at all! Maybe needs a puller of some kind, but with this much force needed I am concerned about fitting it to the new motor??

    Hornby P2

I think this is the issue, DCC and feedback control hide the terrible motor performance, I was able to get nice performance with feedback. However for those of us who can't or don't want to go DCC the loco needs to run nice, or it might be hiding a raft of problems later????

Wow, is that all I need to do? I'd love the flywheel, the capacitors only make a slight difference!

LOL, just improved the performance even more by oiling the bearings on the new motor! daft sod, hurrying last night as had to get to bed

Hi, would never use anything other than a very good smooth DC on coreless motors! I only got my feedback controller out to see if it would improve the original motor, it did but with the expected noise.

Hi all Here is my video showing the new motor in place and the results, along with experiments etc Just as a comment, where as before if I used my feedback controller I could get smooth operation from the original motor, with this new one it hates feedback and seems to run slowly!

Hi Leen Yes, had to skim a fair bit off the front otherwise I could not get it to fit in the cradle. Video underway

    Hornby P2

Update: Got the original motor on test off load, I find it starts to turn at 4 volts, however once running it dips in speed a fair bit. Has anyone else tested this? even the Smokey Joe motors I have don't do this?

    Hornby P2

Hi guys I got fed up with the running this evening so stripped her down and removed the original motor, I was able to confirm that the chassis is very free running and only pick up friction is noticeable. The motor outside of the loco displayed the same horrible 'snap into life' as it did inside. Replaced with the Hornby X????? and now I have a very smooth running Cock indeed. I did add two 10uf 63 volt non polarised capacitors however, over one point the engine does stumble a bit compared to the motor with flywheel. If only the same flywheel could be fitted to the new motor, then we'd have a lovely mechanism indeed. However I am not 95% happy. The motor swap was not a drop in affair, the new motor is ever so slightly longer and had to use a small file to reduce the length on the plastic side of it. All on video and I'd have it uploaded for you if I did not have to start work at 04:00 tomorrow. So yes its worked, would love the flywheel as there is a bit of armature pole sticking out the back, but can't see how to do it just now. Full report as time allows. Night

Hi Leen Thanks and no problem! I'll check the points you make, probably do a video on it to let others see. Have you missed the flywheel affect at all with the new motor? I was looking into using capacitors (bit like stay awake) to keep mine smooth.

Hi Leen, As you know I am soon to do this swap. Is it possible that you have photos showing the weight being removed and the wires under? It would be a big help to see what can be expected? Mike
  22. I've been trying to drum up support for this on my groups and at work (railway) but this NRM obstacle is causing concern. Really don't see why they have the right to block or delay things like this, after all one would think they would support interest in heritage and possible visits to see the real thing? Bachmann seemed to do ok with the NRM Deltic, what about calling this the NRM class 71? might sweeten things?
