  1. I prefer to solder to the rail rather than to the rail joiner.

Firstly it avoids the expansion issue, and secondly if problems are caused by unreliable conduction through the rail joiners, what is the benefit of soldering to the rail joiner?

  2. My only experience of negative feedback was years ago when I gave negative to a buyer who sent me a dud cheque.  He retaliated and claimed he had told me not to lodge the cheque and to wait for a second one.  Meanwhile I had sent the item, never got the message referred to but I did lodge the second check when it arrived.  This second cheque worked.

I sent all the details to e Bay and at my request they removed both negative feedbacks.

I was also sorely tempted to leave negative for a buyer who claimed that the Jouef class 40 I sent him failed to arrive. Unfortunately I had no proof that it did, but have used tracked post ever since.

One of the reasons for the relatively early demise of the Westerns was their inability to power aircon stock as it proved impossible to fit them with ETS.

Slightly OT but I'm curious as to why the concept of the generator  van was not common on BR as it has been in Ireland for decades, NIR, CIE and RPSI.

  4. Rather than try to find the poor joint, I would suggest making a second, parallel  connection to the fiddle yard. Make the connection well past where the trains slow.  If that works, then problem solved.  The poor joint will still be there somewhere but that doesn't matter.

  5. My own layout is housed in a pre existing block built shed that came with the house.  I used contractors to get a new roof put on, but I did the remaining work (flooring, insulation, ceiling, lighting, electrics, windows and door) myself.  While I am happy with the result it took me a long time, and with hindsight if I was doing it again I would make greater use of contractors so that I could get to the model railway construction sooner.

Regarding the size limitations of permitted development, there is always the option to  exceed those restrictions by applying for planning permission.

  6. I was watching a YouTube review today of a GT3 from one of the re runs. The author complained that the cab light did not come on.  When he raised the issue with KR he got a response along these lines ( and I quote) ;

"The rivet counters complained about the cab light on the first run so I discontinued it.  lt's the rivet counters whohave spoilt it for everyone else!"

    Wow!

  7. If he can't pay now he really shouldn't have purchased, but then you did agree to wait and you're stuck with that.   I hope you won't  be posting the item until you get paid

He may be waiting to see if he can get the same item cheaper elsewhere but let's hope that is not the case.

Lesson learnt I'm afraid.  Been there myself.

  8. BoD I thought Clockman was  referring to the arrangement where a relay is energised then one of its own set of  contacts maintains the energy to the coil.

Such an arrangement  requires a current  through the coil.  The interruption of that current by pressing a normally closed push button then switches the relay off.

Are you referring to some kind of mechanical  latching? How is such a relay then switched off?

Thanks Ian. The relays are latching types so once triggered they stay switched. I note your comment on the relay parameters, though!

    Martin Ballard

A latching relay requires a constant current which the cdu  won't give.  I suppose  it would work with a twin coil relay of some sort  using a second supply to keep it latched.

So ingrained is the recitation of the script they do not respond to any attempt to stop them once they are in flow.

I have found that hanging up works for me, though I can't tell if they actually stop. 😀

If pressed, KRM WILL refund IN FULL - I know - I rejected the 'half - half' Fell and got a full refund.

Agree.  I cancelled my prepaid order for Bellerophon due to it being clear that it did not have the fully operating valve gear.  KR Models refunded in full with no quibble.  After I got the refund they asked why I had cancelled and I told them it was the valve gear issue.
