    Hi Guys,

Here is another one for you 'wagon spotters'.  Again at Dumfries in 1927 probably of the same train as previously but on a different day.  Again there are two cattle wagons leading but here one is of GWR origin (was this during the brief time that the GWR allowed their cattle wagons to be pooled before pulling them out?).

    Cheers Tony

I wondered what the boxes were at the side of the other track. In the larger image I see they're stacked sleepers with chairs on top. Looks as though the PW guys are going to be busy.

That's what I was planning to use Jonathan, thanks.  But I was wondering about the size and style of the lettering and numbering - I'm struggling to find any references (and also for my 4F).  Could you help please?

Up to 1938 plain black engines had black shaded gold livery. You couldn't see the black shading on a black engine. The LMS on the tender usually was at 53" spacing. After 1938 red shaded yellow livery was the norm. The only photo I have of a 2-8-0 has 10" numerals.

The latest project has been to fit a DCC chip, sound, and stay-alive to another one of the "interlopers".  Clearly too big a loco for Chuffnell R, but I like them, so Rule 1 applies yet again!  And she may be a little more at home on CR Mk II.  The decoder was incredibly sensitive to being positioned just so - if not, it refused to work.  This caused more than a little gnashing of teeth, and is why the speaker is being used to hold the rear end of the PCB in the right place!

But after a bit of effort every fitted back together, and still worked as advertised, thank goodness.

It's a lovely looking model, with loads of nice details.  Just needs some coal, fire irons, lamps, and a crew now.  I also need to find out what the correct LMS livery would be for it in the 1930s; I'm planning to renumber her as 13808, and she will also be getting airbrushed with a dirty black mix in due course, and then weathered.

Unlined plain black should be just fine.

Why is it impossible to put a loco on the track, before you take photos?

Probably because he describes it as a 3 rail loco in the Item Specifics section and he couldn't find the third rail.

  5. On with railway action. The MegaPoints stuff arrived super quickly (an adverb that seems to have been forgotten about) so I've fitted it inside the old fiddle-yard control panel box. The switch pins on the servo controller were connected to the old switches. The blue wire and green panel are for the ADM turntable in the yard.

Yes, probably, though it could be the end-door version, D351, with the end door at the end obscured by the engine. Evidently the photo dates from no earlier than 1917 but where is it?

Looking at the photo on the Rail Photoprints website the caption reads:

"GWR 2-4-0 Crane Tank 1299 at Swindon circa 1928. Initially purchased by the South Devon Railway in 'kit' form the loco was completed at Swindon and adopted as works shunter in 1881"

It did look strange pulling into Pitlochry. Even stranger was an LNER Azuma heading north.

  8. The Minx Microdrives will soon be on their way to a new home. I'm just glad that somebody can make use of them rather than going to the tip.

Here's a couple of servos in place as I wait for the delivery from MegaPoints.

  9. Well I've finally got fed-up with the Minx Microdrive system for changing turnouts in the fiddle yard and they are on offer free in the Classifieds should anybody still use them. This was an idea which was too far ahead of the technology at the time. The least bit change in temperature caused the built-in alarms to sound, as did any slight movement of the turnout itself. It also required a very smooth input.

I've plenty servos and channel to hold them. the servos will be above board and I've 4 in place already. I'm going to used MegaPoints stuff to activate them and their relays to change polarity. The existing fiddle yard control panel will still be used as ordinary on-off switches can be used instead of passing contact ones which some systems rely on. Just as a comparison I went to DCC Concepts at the weekend to see  how much their stuff would cost for the fiddle yard, just under £350! MegaPoints is less £150.

  10. Does anybody who still uses the above system want a shed-load of parts? I've plenty of Point Actuator Controllers, Actuator stall motors and cables.

If I'm the last man standing to use this system, then the lot will be heading for the LA small electrical items recycling bin.

    Just pay for postage.

  11. In bid to get away for couple of days from hospitals and chemo we went to Pitlochry for 3 nights this week. One of the days we went to Inverness via the Highland line. While waiting for our late-running train, an HST came into the station to wait for a path south.

We've not had them on for a couple of days, but here's a classic from our old chums Rocket Railways!

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115806654467

Its a Prototype Models LMS Goods Shed, carefully described through the lot as "OO gauge".

Whoever did the listing didn't bother to look at photo 2

    Apart from that minor error......

£10.50 inc post from Anticsonline or £12.85 from RR

Not a bad price for this class 20

However, look at the main picture then the rest & also the description:

NEM pockets & nice detail on the main, massive d-locks & some very black traction tyres. Also listed as "never run".

Probably just my OCD clicking in 🤣

Looks as though he's used a web stock photo for the first and the actual model for the rest.

I must admit to being a bit detached from rural farms, living in a Victorian city terrace!

I will be doing more scenic work to bed in the little farm steading, so I am off to the Canmore site for inspiration, although a fair bit of the photo archive seems derelict!

I suspect the the tidiness or lack thereof will depend on when your farm is set. I seem to remember from the late 50s and 60s farms were well looked after. I guess it was due to cheap labour being readily available. Gaps in walls were rebuilt, hedges nicely laid and no junk and rusting machinery cluttering up the place. No it's old pallets, hedges slashed to pieces and the more junk the better.
