  1. Back to the Flatiron saga. Trying to get pick-ups on the chassis was a right pain  and I could only manage to do the front and rear wheels. There are holes in the chassis where you would think plunger pick-ups would go but these are not in line with the wheels.

With the final drive cog on the middle set of wheels freewheeling I could push the loco on track with no binding of the rods. Put power to the motor and the gearing ran sweetly. Tighten up the grub screw on the final drive cog and binding ensues. After a week of fiddling and general messing about, I thought life is too short for me and bought a very reasonably priced Bachmann Jinty of the Bay of e. After cutting off the outside brake pull rods and applying several slivers of Plastikard to the body to bring it up to the right height, I feel as though I'm getting there. Next a decoder fitting and then then fixing the bogie in place with frame extensions to reduced the daylight around it.

    Sorry, you lost me...

The male of the species is stereotyped by trying to get something to work or go together without reading the instructions first.

There were a number of photo's of Hartwell on a earlier rendition of RMweb, though lost long ago in the upgrades.
Hartwell was sold to me after the Wigan Show in 2003 (I think) and brought back down to west Cornwall, where I did some minor alterations to the layout, including moving the signal box and Goods shed, realigning some of the track, doubling the track over the viaduct etc., plus making the three centre boards wider by 6" and adding a further 3' scenic section to one end.
It was exhibited at major shows as Penlan until 2014, the last show being at Cardiff.
The layout is now a roundy-roundy in my 'attic' room.
The main tracks through he platforms etc., have been in place for 33 - 34 years.
I have a collection of photo's of the layout, in both phases, as Hartwell and Penlan.
    here's a couple of comparison photo's..
Hartwell, then Penlan - The Penlan signal box is now out of sight on the other side of the tracks in the bottom RH corner, which gave the signalman a much better view in either direction.

Nice to see it again. My parents were very friendly with Robbo Robinson, wife and daughter who I believe was the last(?) at Hartington or at least very near the end. He used to be at Penrith but he took part in a strike and moved to Hartington for his trouble. Few Union Laws in those days! His sons worked out of Buxton MPD.

They're at it again. Now they've messed up the Purchase history page, with a new format, which worked perfectly well previously.

It doesn't seem to have much history about it. About a month at best for me.

  5. I used to visit Peters regularly when living in Middlesbrough up to 1999 then up to 2014 while still working on Teesside. New prices were matched to box shifters and their 2nd hand was competitively priced. Don't know what's happened to them in the intervening years.

Seems anything painted yellow carries quite a premium....

If you have a long link to insert into a post, just click the link icon in the heading. You can then add the URL and a name of your choice to be displayed rather than the long link.

Or just copy to and including the "?" Then paste i.e.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185901452126?

Yup, I reckon but Google wasn't interested in being helpful and I couldn't bring myself to suggest Chris try to model a handwheel valve so small!

    Although...

...how fine is the resolution on that 3D printer again...?

Well I've addressed the ashpan on the left hand loco Ric; hopefully that looks a little better!  3D numberplates are on the way from @railtec-models, and I'll fill those mysterious holes in the spectacle plate with some Mr Surfacer.  The only one I'm not sure how to tackle (and may just leave well alone) is the seam between the dome and the boiler...

Sometimes there was a seam in the boiler clothing along the boiler top. Don't know about GWR locos though.

I'm improvising brake rodding on a 4mm 5'2” wheeled Johnson 2F and am looking for information on how these were arranged. I understand the distinction between small-wheeled-with-external-pull-rods and large-wheeled-with-internal-pull-rods.

In Essery & Jenkinson's “Illustrated Review of Midland Locomotives” vol 4, there is this comment on Plate 63, page 46:  “... whereas the larger-wheeled locomotives had their brake pull rods on the centre-line of the locomotive behind the wheels.”

If it's any help there's plate 88 of the same book and it does not appear that the loco has a pair of pull brake rods. I must admit I put a double inside pair on my large wheeled 2F.

  10. Brassmasters Black 5 to OO Gauge

Never got round to finishing this model and never will. Needs an experienced modeller to complete. Brassmasters Black 5 with sprung chassis. Almost finished and there will be the bits that were left in the box. Gear train runs very nicely but I have lost the grub screw to the final drive. The wheels and motion turn too. The cab roof isn't fitted to allow painting of the cab etc. Offers welcome.
