  1. Just saw this thread and noticed this comment. You will find that Edinburgh had a prison before it had a railway. Try searching for 'Calton Gaol'. The current prison site in the Saughton Mains area dates from the earlier part of the last century; it had replaced Calton. I don't know when those held for certain serious offences began to be segregated to 'Special Units' in Glasgow and Aberdeen however Calton would have held a few in its day. To go back on thread this is really quite interesting. Thanks for starting it.
  2. Hi again Scott, Not sure if this is too late for your modelling but I picked up a book this week that has two photographs taken on the last day of passenger service; they show two different trains, one each at Pinkhill and Corstorphine. Both trains are 2-car Met Camms though one is GSYWP while the other is BFYE. Hope that's of interest. Regards, Alex.
  3. Hi again, It's at times like these that we'll miss the 'groan' button. Regards, Alex.
  4. Hi folks, It's great to see a retailer who is upfront about why they are having to change their methods. (I have had increasing numbers of problems with the same courier.) The one that H&A use for their paint orders was fine when they delivered to me last month. It's also good to see a business use a licensed courier rather than sneak it into the Royal Mail. Regards, Alex.
  5. Hi Rob, Just to back up Captain Kernow's comment, it's possible to purchase compete wheelsets from Bachmann; I did it earlier this year, and it wasn't expensive. The wheels came as an assembles set complete with coupling rod; all i had to do was drop off the keeper plate on the loco and tease the replacements into place. Just drop them an email, but you'll need to be specific about class and livery (or give them the catalogue number of the original rtr loco you're working on). Regards, Alex.
  6. Hi again, Sorry for the delay in getting this done; it's been a bit busy for a so-called week off. The following data comes from 'Modern Locomotives Illustrated' No. 202, BR Standard Shunters Classes 08, 09, 10 & 13. 13075 Green E/C (Due to the very low number I'm tempted to suggest this was a repaint.) 13282 Green E/C 13215 Black E/C 13240 Black E/C 13348 Green L/C (B&W image with caption claiming it's green. Looks to 'light' to be black.) Except as noted these pictures are in colour. There are a number of other images in B&W that show 1948 series numbers, and are clear enough to reasonably suggest whether they'r eblack or green; I can list these as well if you think it'll be of use. Hope these help. Regards, Alex.
  7. Hi Clive and Tony, Try this link for photos of both sides: Hope it gives you what you're looking for. Regards, Alex.
  8. Hi again, Managed to get a look at a few sample pages online; it looked useful so now have a copy on its way to me. Again, thanks. Regards, Alex.
  9. None of my friends would believe me if I told them a Railway Modelling website was hosting a discussion covering quantum mechanics, astrophysics, and complex mathematics all at the same time. This forum routinely throws up some truly wonderful, and bizarre, threads. PS. I was taught why/how gravity affects light but it was a long time ago and I cannot remember the explanation.
  10. That's a dangerous wish, or has it been fulfilled ......
  11. As Pink Floyd almost sang, "build up the wall"!
  12. Ah, non-Euclidian geometry ... I've not long got over that headache .....
  13. Dear Administrators and Moderators, With respect to Jim's entry, above, can we have a "terrifying" button? Thanks, Alex.
  14. Hi again, Thanks for that date. Not familiar with the 'D+EG Locomotive Directory'; could you tell me a bit about it? Thanks. Regards, Alex.
  15. Hi Sid, That really helps. I was wondering if the air brakes were added once the Mk3 sleepers came into use. Regards, Alex.
  16. Hi everyone, I have had a look in the usual places but cannot find the answer to this one. The reason behind the question is that not only did I watch the real one in action in Inverness in the early 90s, but I am also considering buying the Dapol model. Knowing when she was dual-braked would give me an idea of what stock could be run with it. Thanks in advance for any help. Regards, Alex.
  17. Why let fact get in the way of a cherished fantasy?
  18. Brilliant badge. Where do I get them, and do they do bulk discount? (I know of a few folk that would wear them simply to annoy some of our 'acquaintances'.)
  19. Memories of High School physics come flooding back .... assuming we have floods on this disk. At school I majored in maths, physical sciences, and engineering; later in life I studied theology at a respected University ... the lectures on science and faith systems were always 'colourful', especially the day we discussed red-shift.
  20. Is it not normally the case that those who believe they have sole access to the 'truth' are, almost by definition, a minority?
  21. The back of four elephants of course. They, in turn stand upon the back of a giant turtle ....... Does nobody pay attention any more?
  22. That's not good since dihydrogen monoxide accelerates the rate of corrosion of iron .....
  23. Did they mention the elephants, or turtle, at all?
  24. Hi seaber, Sorry to hear about the virus; I hope you make a full and speedy recovery. I've got some time off this week, so I'll get the information noted and posted. Regards, Alex.
  25. I agree, and if it did fail then blocking the Corstorphine branch would be a lot less of a nuisance than if it happened on the sub. (Balerno couldn't be used due to the curvature.) It all contributes to making this choice of line an inspired one.
