  1. I hope you don't mind me resurrecting this thread, however I am curious about this wagon photo that was posted here over five years ago. The location is fairly local to me, however what really caught my eye was the end door; only ever seen a five plank with end doors in china clay use. Can anyone enlighten me on the origins of this one? Many thanks for any help. Regards, Alex.
  2. Grim .... a bit like the grey of a covenanter's uniform.
  3. Hi again, Ah, back to jokes ..... Do we end the discussion of civil wars here, or start a new thread somewhere else? Regards, Alex.
  4. Hi Scott, Not the GA dwg, but a scale one: I seem to remember that in the latter years of the MRC there was a series of scale drawings of various BR shunter classes; one of the online indices may help you find out if your answer is there. Regards, Alex.
  5. See fog on the Forth ruining the view across to Fife - Haarmageddon
  6. Pedant Mode On! - 'English Civil Wars' - also known as the 'wars of the three kingdoms' - note that there were several of them through the late 16th century into the 17th - Pedant Mode Off! (On a lighter note, in the 1990s a friend of mine once had to work with two neighbouring villages who had not spoken kindly to each other after ending up on opposing sides in at least one of the above conflicts.)
  7. Hi folks, Bit the bullet, so to speak, and ordered to Comrie one (HE 3818 / NCB 19) from my local model shop. As I said elsewhere on her, the livery is awful, but correct. I used to have two of the DJ ones in BR colours, that I bought when they were released. Both ran like a dream until I chipped them; the less said about what happened next, the better. Shop graciously took them back as they were no use to me at the time if they didn't run well under DCC. To be honest, the release of this has enabled me to decide on my next project. It will be analogue controlled. Regards, Alex.
  8. Hi folks, Sadly, reality of the previous few posts doesn't just impact on our American friends. An acquaintance of ours has US family through marriage. A couple of weeks ago one of the Americans was beaten, and then shot dead. He was not a criminal; he was not armed; he was murdered for simply wearing the 'wrong' colour of sweater! Regards, Alex.
  9. Hi folks, Very interesting video. What caught my eye, and made my wife ask "did they really paint it like that?", was Comrie's no. 19 (HE3818). Very ugly, but "I want one"! Once repainted a Farish one in that scheme, only to be told that there never was one like that despite me having a magazine article (c/w colour photo) to prove it. Regards, Alex.
  10. Hi everyone, Latest sign outside one of local pubs reads: Special Offer Whisky with free H2O croutons. Regards, Alex.
  11. Absolutely anything but surprised by this!
  12. Back in the days when you created a class 27 (in 00) from a Lima 33, one of the boys in the club decided to do his one in two-tone green. On numerous occasions at shows you could hear the stage whisper going, "hey never did one like that"; my friend would then produce a book with a photo of the real one. The response - "that photo has been doctored!" Have you seen the photo of the 9F on new tankers of the type that later became TTA/TTV?
  13. Hi again, There is only one, real, problem with that wagon books and its companion volumes - you will be tempted to build even more wagons because of the inspiration and nice pictures. You have been warned! Regards, Alex.
  14. Hi again, I've noticed a couple of references to MTK. Several decades ago I picked up a couple of their coach kits for what I thought was a give-away price. After several attempts to come to terms with the body shells (aluminium?) I began to understand the price, and gave up! I think the term I would use now is 'scratch-aid'. Regards, Alex.
  15. Hi again folks, If I were to tell my non-modelling friends that this forum branches out into such subjects as comedy, music, philosophy, political and social history, physical sciences, and now classic English literature they would never believe me. What a wonderful place this is! Regards, Alex.
  16. If the end of the run-rounds at Peak Rail, and Bradford Exchange are anything to go by then a very tight fit would be prototypical (if not necessarily good for the nerves).
  17. Brilliant ... try Googling those, and watch the software give up! Both sound as if they come from a bygone age, and have a certain believability to them; again, brilliant.
  18. HI Mike, I think you miss my point - I wanted to exclude the area of 'collecting', hence the use of the word 'model' in the thread title. The references, earlier, to the '1963 BLT' or the Minories and Hornby-Dublo are along the lines of what I am thinking though from an era with which I am not yet familiar. I have nothing against collecting models of, or from, any era, which is why I mentioned my enjoyment of the Tri-ang displays. Regards, Alex.
  19. Hi again, Sorry for the lack of clarity in my thinking. The distinction is based on the idea that both of these subjects, i.e. 3-rail, and Tri-ang, have what seems to me to be a significant following. I've seen a few displays of both of those, and enjoy them. On the basis of the quality and detail available now, I agree. Like some of those who collect Dublo, etc, I think it's because, for me, it's the era during which I got interested in the hobby. As ever, many thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Regards, Alex.
  20. Hi folks, There is at least one thread on the forum dealing with 'old-fashioned' 0-gauge; despite searching I haven't been able to find anything similar in respect of 00. Is it something that anybody models in or with? I don't mean collections of three rail stock, or the wonderful Tri-ang collectors' layouts that I sometimes see at shows; rather, I am thinking about those who choose to model with items that were available before the early 1980s. For example, would anyone choose to model British Rail of the late 1970s using only the stock available at the time (e.g. Tri-ang Met-Camm dmu, Hornby classes 25/37/47/HST)? It's something that has appealed to me, so I am curious if it has appealed to anyone else. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Regards, Alex.
  21. Hi again, Posted the above some three weeks ago yet only realised this week that I hadn't got around to taking and posting a picture; sorry. Anyway, evidence that Superquick may have gone into production of 12":1' scale brickpaper: The prototype is on the King's Buildings campus of the 'University of Edinburgh'. From a reasonable distance it simply looks like a new-ish building, but as you get closer you realise that no bricks were harmed in its construction. Thanks for the patience. Regards, Alex.
  22. Hi, Interesting to read your comments about varnished card. It's an underated approach, yet it has real benefits to it. It's good to see you, and others on here, working with it. Previously I have used mounting card sealed with enamel gloss varnish; it worked well, and lasted a very long time. Regards, Alex.
