  1. I like the use of the clamp on the Set Square, very useful idea ... Thanks for that one dt ...
  2. Your local Radio Control Model shop, should have some plastic inner control lines, which is much smoother running than Piano Wire and will negotiate bends too, without loosing any pressure on tension or compression. Regards Julian Edit. You can buy it online too.
  3. Quote ..... "Today, 10 chain curve and the old disused Harbour Station, I was given, a tour of the inside of the building,by the owner 2.week's ago. May ask Freebs to build it for the layout, late summer, if I save up my Saturday pocket money." Unquote You may need a little more that a few weeks Gob-Stopper cash for that one dt .....
  4. I seem to remember it ................. ............ was a wind which blew constantly at certain times of the year over large bits of the Continent .......
  5. That is really impressive, would that be ...... one in each hand and Jim on the shoulders ......... or one held in both hands with the other balanced on it, with Jim sat on the top ..... what about one in each hand, with Jim in-between them ...... Ok serious now, the rail paint, for the pre-ballasted bit, might benefit from one of those Paint Pens, someone here-abouts mentioned. Edit - spelling
  6. You and Marcus ........ which one of you left the the rear light switch unplugged then? .......
  7. I don't suppose you ...................... ................ have that Peterborough address handy? ..........
  8. Thanks dt ..... up there with assistance as ever ................. I will now make a cuppa and settle to some reading ....... ........... and a bit of plotting ...
  9. He can follow my Class "66" InterhubGB, around my layout, if he likes ............................... have you driven that one? ................. but he won't be able to see it at night, unless it is pulling something with a Rear Light on it. ..... I bought it, new, at the Bentley [Melksham] Show last week, but the Rear Light won't work in either direction. You probably know, it has a switch to turn it on/off, but that has no effect at all. It has a strange rattle to it, at times too, although I read somewhere, that it may be to do with the Bogie Mounts rattling. Either way, I will let Bachmann's finest look at it. Regards
  10. A book I read, some years ago had the appropriate reply to this .................. ............................................. "Get thee behind me satan Class"66" .......... PS - I think that "behind" may already have been the case [or was it another Driver that has chased Marcus's Tail Lamps around the country? ...... ]
  11. Weeeell ...... whilst waiting for another opportunity to convert the Camouflaged wall look-alikes into a layout - bit of a problem slipping it past the M-in-L Guard post in the lounge [and she staying for some days yet! ....... so another matter might get a dusting off ...... I thought a little gentle application of some Kadees might not draw too much attention of the management ........... Ssshhh 'though ..... I did a new Bachmann first, even though it had their modern springy swivel-thingys attached to the body, some long NEM shanks seemed to go in ok ... but as yet not track tested ..... Sssshhh .... Next I now arrived at some which have older Couplers. I was going to do some Bachmann “Local Suburban Set” coaches [Collett Corridor] and find they have a narrow Tension Lock, attached to the Bogies [marked 3023E, if that has any meaning]. The attachment is through a bar, screwed in the centre and 2 location pegs outboard. Looking at the height where the Kadee box would be screwed, it seems that the only possible fit might come from Underset Shank Couplers. Does anyone have any information about what Kadee couplers might be best from what is available. The attachment front edge is slightly beyond the end of the coach chassis, suggesting the Short [144 Whisker set, or 24 Normal set] Given the Buffers are not sprung the Medium length ones might also be worth a look [147 Whisker, or 27 Normal]. Not sure which of these will sit high enough, if at all. I would imagine that a set of Short and a set of Normal would allow for experiment. I am not sure if there is a variety of Boxes to fit them in, nor if any of the boxes will sit higher than others. The 56xx loco, from the Set, has pockets, which are standard old fashioned low Bachmann ones, for which it looks like, there is no Kadee suited. They are so low it may be suitable to glue another pocket on top of it and fit a 362 coupler?? Have anyone come across any reasonable answer to this one either? Regards and thank you for your time. Julian
  12. Agreed ....... although I'm rather doubtful ......... .................... that he will part with it for you ................. but there is always hope .......
  13. Looking forward to the new area, dt and the kit is already looking rather "French" ...
  14. From the many posts on these threads ................. .................................................... time is seldom kind to anyone .........
  15. Not sure anyone is allowed to contemplate this sort of activity any-more .................. ........................... without James May [ .. ] and a television crew ........
  16. Hi Scott, Nice to see track again ... It looks like you have a sizeable room there too. The first of the NMRA, second photograph, allows you to pass a Loco from one track to any of the others, without shuffling back and forth, or going all the way round the Points at the ends. That seems like an advantage to me. It does allow for parking/working different lengths of train too. On the less/more points; I would guess that, since you still have the points at both ends which allows trains to pass anything on the main lines, it rather comes down to how much you want to shunt stuff around in the storage and how many "trains" there will be to store [and therefore to manoeuvre others around them] ...
  17. In my case ............. not sure that N is much use either ....... more a matter of finding space under the Marital Thumb .........
  18. Something to do with the Devonshire air ... so it used to be said ..... Whatever the real reason for it's relaxing qualities, I'm pleased it is having the recommended effect ..... and, of course, looking forward to the results .....
  19. I'm on holiday at the moment [lucky old me] - nice and warm ..... but I will spend a good deal of time looking at her work when I get back next week .... quite remarkable stuff. Thank you for drawing our attention to it C&WR .....
  20. Given the size and accuracy needed for this project .......... ........... it would seem logical that the contribution from NR should be rather substantial ........................... assuming funding is available ........ surely possible with a Private Contract .......
  21. I wish ... [been on a better pension now ... ........ aktuerly ..... given the sides were clamped quite tightly ..... I didn't think pilot holes were needed ..... However in the event, it would seem that advice might well have been of benefit ..... Edit: crossed the "t", left the "i" ...
  22. Absolutely fantastic ................. I'm so pleased for you ................. it really cheers me up to hear that ............ ................................ I'll PM you my address .......... ............ how long do you think it will take you to solder all the droppers on my new track ...
  23. Just to be a little less frivolous for a moment, I hit a minor snag, which didn't reveal it'self until well after the Boards had been put together. As can be seen the Facing Boards/Loco stops [Fascia?] run across the joints in the boards along the sides and bolts are applied to take advantage of the vertical stiffness in the Fascia. The combination of Pattern Maker's Dowels, a couple of bolts for each joint face and the vertical Ply sheets should tie the boards to reduce any flex between the boards, where they meet. I wouldn't have bothered quite so much had the rails passed over the joints in a near right-angle direction, but they all pass over at about 45o. So any separation would have maximum effect on the track alignment. DSC00536 by JulianR 2013, on Flickr When it came to dismantle it to adopt the camouflage position, behind the En-suite door, the Fascia wouldn't separate from the Base-board sides, after all the bolts had been removed. It took quite a lot of force to shift them with a small number of little splinters which came away round some of the holes and other spots where a small bit of the drilling swarf had got firmly stuck between the boards. I had to cut bits of swarf from the boards with a knife. I had clamped the boards so they didn't move while the holes were drilled through. Having drilled them, I screwed the bolts up, to ensure complete alignment. They remained so until after the whole job was complete and all the pictures taken for your enlightenment entertainment. My guess would be that as the drilling progressed there was enough pressure at the sides of the hole for some of the swarf to be pressed between the boards, taking with it some of the glue keeping the Ply veneers together and the drill may have warmed the glue sufficiently to make it sticky again. At that point with the bolts applied the glue would cool and set again. It remains to be seen whether my guess is right or whether it is something other and there is a recurrence. I will try and see.
  24. ......................... caught you, slipping in that one of the full size building .......
