Thanks Tim, what a treat! This must be one of the best and clearest photos of a GWR stable block I have yet come across - and  involving a Rolleiflex it seems.

Very useful too as it shows certain details which are often not clear or no longer present in other photos of stable blocks. E.g. the brickwork around the tap, which is in the drawings but I hadn't seen a photo of it.

Were the taps a standpipe like set up against the building, or did the pipe originate inside and hence, why the brick work almost defined the tap area?

    @Tim V fantastic shot :)

  2. Your doing it again Mikkel, your encouraging me!  My bank manager demands that you stop such action immediately ... personally I think you should carry on!

Only just got round to reading it, but really interesting run-down of stables - it goes to show the GWR (and indeed most other significant pre-grouping) railways I suspect did a lot more than just shovel coal into noisy mechanical things and move trucks and passengers from A to B.  The GWR Goods Services books really show another side that we don't associate with railways today, that of the cartage services, whether horse-drawn or later mechnical/petrol horses.  Really is a fascinating subject.

    Well Done.

  3. Just a comment, that doesn't really help anyone, but explains a few things - remember the software is the latest version of the software that has always been used on rmWeb.  I think if the software had been upgraded each time a new version had been released, the changes would have been minimal, but for various reasons that didn't or couldn't happen, hence there was a jump in software versions.   Because this software isn't bespoke to rmWeb, its a publicly available, off the shelf paid for system, then it will be developed using feedback from thousands of users worldwide.

What we find difficult, is more just getting to grips with a new system and the jump in software version means that we haven't seen the small progressive changes that have taken place.  No help to the actual problem, but hopefully it might help to explain why the problem has arisen.

Ha ha, thanks Rich. Photos are taken with an old point and shoot camera, one or two are image stacked. I am forever in need of a better camera. I have tried using my smartphone, looked good at first sight but the quality was poor when blown up. It's a fairly cheap  phone though, maybe an Iphone would be better.

You do really well. The latest iPhone is good, for this kind of thing with the image reduced by around 50%, quality is nice. I’ve used a cheap second hand Nikon DSLR body (must have a usb socket) with a 35mm macro lens before and the Helicon Focus software they came out really well.

Thanks Northroader. I haven't been giving this layout much attention in recent years, so it's nice to "rediscover it" and run something other than goods trains again. The original idea with these layouts was that I could dispose of one, build another, and it would still be the same station. But they have grown on me (not literally!).

Are you suggesting its a case of the tail wagging the dog Mikkel? :P

Superb photography and great at drawing the reader in, as ever.

  6. Ps anyone tell me how to add more photos??

Not sure if its the same on blogs as on forum posts, but if you edit your post, then choose to use the Full Editor (or it may be a 'Reply with Attachments' button) you can add as many as you like from there.

If you want them as attachments, just add them and upload them.  If you want them to appear within the text, add and upload as before, then click the cursor in the test where you want it to appear and click the 'Add to Post' link beside the appropriate image.

  7. Thanks Rich

the loco is scratch built, laser cut body work, some 3d printed bits for the engine block and buffers and some etched bits done for me by PPD.

Superb work David.  I quite enjoy working with wood - have experimented with laser cut items for buildings before, but never rolling stock.  Might have to give that a go :). Certainly some incentive there!  Have to go and have a look through your blog for any other views of it!

  8. David,

I dont comment very often, but follow your layout ever since I came across it on YouTube!  Simply stunning and just shows what can be done!  Well done that man ;). Hope to see FPE in the flesh someday soon.

Love the Slaters simplex - its one thats on my list of things to have a go at one day, I do love narrow gauge, but daren't start on something else, without finishing one of the other projects!

  9. Hi Paul,

I'll be interested to see how you get on with this, having heard a lot (more negative than positive in all honesty) about Digitrax Transponding. Im hoping to use it on my freight wagon sets, so that TrainController can accurately know the length of the trains heading into the fiddle yard, but have yet to actually do anything with it!  I struggle to get on with the Blogs on here, but I'm trying to follow along!
