  1. Out of curiosity, what is the typewriter-shaped device on the near track on the third photo, please? Also, does Ron have any more photos he would like to share with us? The ones so far look really good.
  2. Elevated shunting signals seems most likely for the bottom groups, as there are no other signals for shunting manoeuvres at the locations where these colour lights are - and they would surely be necessary? On the second photo, for example, there are 2 lights in the bottom group on the signal post on the platform and 2 discs in the 6 foot for the adjacent middle siding, rather than colour lights.
  3. From the photo caption in Flickr For transport minded people the interest will be in the cars parked along the now pedestrianised street. Right to left we have a black Vauxhall Velox, an MG Magnette, a lovely little Austin 7 special, pehaps an Ulster, overshadowing the Austin is a stately Rolls-Royce saloon dating from the late 1930's, following on is a Ford Consul, and two Austin A30's sandwich an Ausin A50. Nearest the camera are a Morris Oxford, Morris Minor and earlier Ford Consul.
  4. There were very few compact Midland main line termini. The original station at Gloucester is the only other one that immediately springs to mind, though with substantial sidings and other appendages attached.
  5. Its unfortunate that the only large scale OS maps of Buxton appear to be 1922 and the 1960s. Basing your model on the late LMS track plan or later would get rid of some nasty pointwork in the goods yard and loco shed area too.
  6. Yes. You really have to draw the scissors and the double slip together in Templot. That was really why I raised my query with the OP. He had just drawn an ordinary turnout where the double slip is, which is nothing like the same.
  7. Here is an enlarged view of the area you are modelling. It shows the "scissors" from your earlier photo. There is clearly a double slip attached to it in the foreground. This is the same as the image in Bill Hudson's book I referred to earlier. I was going to offer to draw the formation in Templot for you, but this really is beginning to seem too much like hard work
  8. But the OP is trying to draw an accurate model of more than what you enclosed in the blue oval, Clive. His trackwork extends halfway into the red circle. I am worried that he has drawn an ordinary turnout when the map suggests a diamond or a slip and the photo in Bill Hudson's book shows a double slip.
  9. Actually, looking at photos, it's a double slip. See 'Through Limestone Hills' by Bil Hudson Plate 245. I am talking about the formation ringed in Echo's post, which is one end of the formation you are asking advice on. Or was it different in the period you are modelling?
  10. The maps suggest that the turnout nearest the station in your formation is actually a slip - presumably a single slip?
  11. On a medium to large layout you will need power districts that have to be isolated from each other.
  12. There were lots of illuminated manuscripts to prepare too
  13. I remember reading about an early 1900s unfulfilled plan to link up all the tramways on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire borders into one vast network. Just imagine Chesterfield, Derby, Mansfield and Nottingham all joined up. Lots of rurality in-between!
  14. What goes up must (generally) come down sooner or later. Promotion is vastly overrated, even with the extra income
  15. Looks great! How big is the layout please?
  16. Only just noticed this thread - is there still room for one more, please?
  17. I thought the champions of the Highland League and the Lowland league played against each other to decide who played Montrose? Interesting scenario if Berwick Rangers or Queen of the South had been bottom and lost to Brora. Presumably there would have been some adjustment of HL and LL clubs to keep things in balance? EDit Yes, Brora played Edinburgh City over two legs. 1-1 home and away, but won 4-2 on penalties
  18. On a similar note, The Chocolate Shop in Oban
  19. Those photos are really Budiful Very inspiring!
  20. That "modern classic", the Hindustan Ambassador is dead http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-27572306
  21. A policemen sees a car doing 40mph in a 30mph area. The car is also bouncing and rocking from side to side. He pulls the car over and see a man in chauffeur's uniform in the drivers seat, with a lady and gentleman in the back, hurriedly rearranging their clothing. The police explained the bit about speeding then just had to ask why the car was bouncing around so much. The chauffeur replied - I am afraid to admit that that Sir and Madam were having it off on the back seat, officer. The police officer thought for a moment and replied - If she gets pregnant I suppose that gives a whole new meaning to the saying "life begins at 40", doesn't it!
  22. I rather like the artistic use of oily rags seen in some pre-grouping photos, giving a "chequer plate" kind of look to paintwork. If they had time to do that, they may even have had time to do the cleaning as well?
  23. Didn't the German railbuses have a similar problem with spares? They had different engines fitted to solve the problem, if I remember correctly?
  24. The Maunsells are down for Q2 2014 release according to Dapol's website.
  25. I prefer to dream in abstract ways and think of features and services that every modeller needs... - Start up a discreet delivery service that only arrives when the wife is out. - Have a new decoder function that alternately displays on the underside of the loco the lettering "owned by xxxxx" (the real owner) and "owned by yyyy" (some fictitious person - only displayed when the wife is on the vicinity). - Have a part exchange service so we can trade our kits in when the RTR version comes out. - Develop smart storage solutions that hide all the things we bought but didn't tell her about. - Develop right-angled track to reduce the space that hidden curves take up on the layout. ........but above anything, we need a nice selection of industrial steam locos - Manning Wardles and the like
