  1. An Interesting one this one. A customer wanted a repaint of a figure he already owned. The figure had lost a hand somewhere down the line and he had an idea in his head of what the figure should look like - slightly thinner up top and no mustache. I am really busy at the moment and didn't really have the time to take a job on like that so of course I said "Yes" Here is what arrived in the post - seen much worse than this but I stripped him anyway and got cracking. Typically I didn't have a spare left hand in my bits box and Burke and Hare are on their holidays so I had to make one Here he is - so if you have a figure that you wished looked a bit brighter all isn't lost - I am sure I can freshen them up for you.
  2. I only just found this thread Very impressive work and some good tips too - bookmarked
  3. Hi Chris The layout is looking great so far If you have time could you give some more details of what you have done with the remote operation using the tortoises please From the pictures I can't quite make out if it's as simple as it looks - is that actuating rod just attached via a piece of tube soldered on ? And at the point end does it have a fixing tube to hold it down or anything ?
  4. OOOPS Thanks for telling me - that mistake logged under 'do not repeat' for next time
  5. Well just before i threw a complete paddy and threw it in the bin I decided to try a blank file and draw a square It cut properly Tried one of the old files - no good I didn't fancy redrawing everything so I pasted my shapes into a new file and they cut properly So I wonder what has happened to these old files ( same software version by the way )
  6. I am starting to wish I had never bought this thing This 'thing' being a Silhouette Portrait After many little niggles like trying to get it to cut a square that is actually square and a circular circle ( and no my material is not moving about ) I had actually manage to make it cut a few things out that I could use Today the same file that cut perfectly a few days ago all the way through in 0.25mm styrene isn't cutting deep enough to even snap it out where it normally cuts all the way through - not even deep enough to snap it out I check all the settings - they are fine and all wound up - depth 10, speed 1 , thickness 33 and double cut I reboot the pc - no different reboot the cutter - no good put a new blade in it - still no good I am not a happy bunny
  7. I am really enjoying watching this come together - thanks for sharing the build.
  8. I am a big fan of both the old Dapol figures and the Monty's figures from Dart Castings I hope you don't mind me pointing to some of my own work as you will find various 4mm 1/76 figures from both ranges here and it might give you some ideas and inspiration. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/78576-skintones-painted-model-railway-figures-by-the-purple-primer/
  9. I am going to be building a simple 009 loco and bought a Kato 103 tram chassis to run it on. This is not DCC ready so needed some soldering to convert it. I did find a description on here of how to do it that was very helpful but I am hoping this simple picture will make it even clearer. It was a simple matter of removing the white clip above the blue resistor to remove the resistor as it's not needed now. The two strips that come from the motor are carefully bent up vertical and the white clip is replaced. The photo should make it clear where I soldered the wires from the DCC decoder I now have a dcc Kato that runs smoothly and slowly - especially with the added weight Thanks to the original poster and I hope the photo makes it even clearer ( even if it is a poor photo from my phone ) NB the white plasticard base and the lead are of course my additions for testing purposes only
  10. I agree that the flaking looks very effective - would be interested to know exactly how you did that if you have time too explain
  11. Here is another of the wonderful Stadden figures I just took some photos of so he can go on my ebay store tonight. Great fun to paint - I hope next time I paint him he chooses something else from his wardrobe other than these pinstriped trousers :-)
  12. Just finished another batch I think I am happy with the skin tones now - got there in the end
  13. Only just found this thread - very impressive stuff. Any updates ?
  14. I have recently been refining a different painting style for my 7mm figures. I was using a similar style for these as the one I was using on my 4mm figures and I wasn't completely convinced it suited 7mm figures as well. It has taken quite a bit of experimentation to get this to where I want - thank heavens you can easily strip metal figures off and try again. I like to refer to these figures as 'Splash Test Dummies'. I have a few refinements to try but this is the direction I am now heading in for 7mm. The basic technique is using artists inks. I wanted to desaturate the colours without losing all the contrast. what I have aimed for is the colour depth that we are used to seeing in older colour photographs and then knocking that back even further to demonstrate the change of colours when seen at a distance - scale colouration of you like. This smaller picture might give some idea ( depends on your screen ) how it could look on a layout Here are some more brutal closeups
  15. I am really enjoying watching this - thanks for sharing it Can I ask how you did the louvers in the front grille ?
  16. Yes hand painted the hat - fun but fiddly When I get around to building my own layout I think I will have standard issues hats - in a PLAIN colour :-) I have one of those Black Watch kits somewhere - I might even get the time to build and paint it one day
  17. I love quirky looking things and that is right up my street
  18. Great layout and I love the figures - very well done
  19. I keep forgetting to add some new stuff here so let's put that right A recent small commission of 4mm figures ...
  20. I bought a silhouette based one this thread and all the great things you guys are achieving but I am having a small problem Using the software that comes with it I don't seem to be able to cut a rectangle properly - it sort of curves in on the corners and seems to be worse the smaller the rectangle Here is a poor freehand drawing that shows the problem ( sort of ) Any ideas what I am doing wrong ?
