  1. Hmm, just thought i'd tease a little bit more...

this is what is sounded like on Wilpshire bank with 13 on, imagine I had to put up with a whole day of this..., I slept very well that night.

Try getting that sound on DCC.

  2. It could always be British Rail engineers grey, with double arrow, and yellow smokebox ?

BR did have to inherit the livery/shade from somewhere..

lets see what Hornby come up with.

  3. If you cant trust colour pictures, it goes without saying you cant trust black and white.

its been pointed out the original source is on file. I’m sure those at the NRM, Darlington etc would be ecstatic to work on this model with Hornby so any resources available could be researched.

So barring any hiccup in China, or the emergence  of a 130 year old Doncaster Apprentice   holding a dried out tin of paint marked Hush..and with a precious 1930’s colour film taken over several months from all angles and all weathers ... everything we say is uninformed speculation by comparison.

Why its painted grey is lost to history, only thought I had could maybe related to heat resistance/dissipation ? But history continues until modern precedent.. Deltic was Blue, Lion was white and Falcon was lime and Kestrel was Brown/Mustard.

Of course even 2 years ago, Azuma 800001 was in a prototype Hitachi  livery.

Or populate the carriage seating areas, or put curtains in first class, or some more detail on the interiors such as seats and seat backs in prototypical colours rather than one plain moulding in whatever colour comes to hand?!

    that costs more though.

more printing, more painting, more parts.

people responded negatively to paying more for passengers preinstalled in some recent coaches.

tooling an odd window open, on a glazing tooling mould costs nothing if done at time of manufacturer... Bachmann class 47 is one such example, and is better for it.. one of the cab windows is open.

The whole point of the thread is that it can be (or rather is) quicker and easier to sell to a trader even if you do not realise quite as much...possibly, maybe........

perhaps 20 years ago, but with the internet things have moved on.

A lot of retailers don't touch second hand any more.
i’m surprised at some of the stuff Hattons does touch.

But the poster referred to hawking around Shows etc.. those days have largely gone to history too, online has mostly replaced those options too.

so is Hattons faster, easier ? -

maybe, from what i’m reading above, there is a benefit of an instant sale of very old models mass produced that are low value and twice retooled since.

But  if youve a desirable loco in excellent condition i’m sure a lot of people would yank your hand off at the shoulder on here if you offered it at a Hattons trade in price, or higher... and that would be as fast and as easy i’d wager.

  6. Ive noticed the panic buying subsided, and aside of Chicken, Eggs and Cleaning produce, finally everything is back to normal in our area.

Though weve pivoted away from Supermarkets, Ive seen some horrendous queues around Zone5’s retailers... They arent designed for everyone in the locality working from home, eating at home, it is designed more of just a “few” working from home and the rest eat in the city/school/restaurant largely by passing the local supermarkets.. they simply dont have space, for people or stock, the local supermarket here actually has trailers in the car park with extra stock in it, as they lack the storeroom space, they are constantly replenishing, though at least now thats something they can do.

They are overwhelmed, with stories of 3 hour shopping trips, online delivery is no chance still here, its booked out.

Weve found a good butcher, farm shop, Polish shop and a Turkish shop, theyve catered to everything. Were also cooking from raw ingredients much much more. The Turkish shop is a life saver, being by the train station they were used to “stack it high” for those going home at night, now that business has gone, they are doing a good trade all day long instead.. but to get the best you need to go early, where as before you went late.

Weve only tried ordering online takeaway twice, both times resulted in failure, whilst theres moped drivers everywhere Justeat /Uber just cant get enough of them.

In short weve all adapted in our locality, the local shops more than ever are benefitting, one is even using the currently closed pub as an extension of its store,. Though a shopping trip is always >1hour jaunt, where ever you go, if your selling food on the local high street there laughing right now.

  7. Around our way postman comes daily,

our online ordering is considerably more than before.

I ordered from Hattons a Colas Class 70 on sunday, it arrived today.

My order from Wizard models 10 days ago has not.

An order from Hereford models took around 3 days.

An Electrtren 0-6-0 from Spain (won Apr 27th), took 7 days, the one from France won the same day still isnt here, ebay wants me to wait until May 27th before investigating.

it was a lot slower 3 weeks ago, but i’m finding it closer to normal now.

It was exhibited at some pretty high profile events though. Especially the Liverpool & Manchester Railway centenary where it was one of the main exhibits.

This is the condition I expect it to be. Certainly doesn't look light grey. And worth considering the locomotive behind is black.

    Jason

I’m not even convinced the loco and tender are the same colour in that picture !

Though looking at its curvy nature, where would a nameplate have gone on that , even the smoke box & cab sides are curve angled.. the only flat side I see is where the worksplate is!

Another option would be to rub 60009’s tender down to bare metal and see what shows through its layers, they found 70 year old Apple green on 60008’s wheels after all, ive got plenty of railwayana with layers of paint on through decades of service.. tender plates, water scoop plates etc are very revealing. 60009 is attached to 10000’s original tender.

  9. I find the sound of a double chimney’d Duchess at speed on a heavy load to be like a record player, my last ride behind 6233 I kept having to remind myself to pause the recording occasionally, it just ran like a dream.

Princess sounds much more “traditional” by comparison.

6201 on Shap... (to get to the point goto 2mins in)

6233 on Shap (from 2m10 in)

    (both random videos from Youtube)

tbh, Ive not been impressed by DCC sound on steam locos, a bluetooth speaker costing £5 on Amazon hidden in the lead coach, playing either of the above videos (or any other video for any other loco ) sounds better, ok I dont have the “f”’s and start up, but then i’m DC only anyway.

  10. I think D6515 is going to be a silent best seller.

Its getting a few miles in down here in the South and developing a bit of a following, that and its a celebrity variant that gives a change to 33008.

Oddly enough I have emailed Fox suggesting they maybe do a run of "Rambo" plates for 08624 (which is a readily available Bachmann model so you'd expect people to want to name it as real life). If they consider that they'll maybe take other suggestions. Printed nameplates suck!

    i thought they stuck ?

  12. i. With so few locos in the livery,

ii. all of the preserved ones remaining may have very little original material if any to recover (fyi 60008 did recover Apple green in 2013 during its repaint)

iii. memories being around 70 years old, in people at least 80

    and..

    iv. Pictures being unreliable...

I think chances are what ever Hornbys researched, everyone will have an opinion on.

with all the above 4 being variables, is there any written (or even a stored research sample) that remains to use as original research ?

demonstrates why we need a reliable test for those having had it, it would give confidence to those having had it, and at last, an accurate sizing test for the government.

Given todays new message about staying alert, stay apart (rather than stay home), if we had mass testing in around 10 days we would know if its working. As we don't, then in around 20 days Hospitals will know if its working, and in 30 days government statisticians will know...

I’m not sure if that message means the lockdown is over, but if it is, next week is probably the only safe window to go out, before the next wave starts to grow exponentially...

I await 7pm with apprehensive baited breath, with three options..a. stay home, b. get my mother out of her isolation and stay home again or c. get out of the country with the family before it goes off big style.

confused, concerned, cocooned.. thats my message.

Yes and I'd say they have retracted the decision to keep tooling it, the 67 is newer (I think, as they used the Lima tooling for a while) and it doesn't have them.

Ive got to admit I like it though, whilst operationally sprung doors, posable vents even sprung buffers are pointless, so are in cab lights.

But when your buying a £150 loco, being able to occasionally touch, feel and know they are there, it gives you a sense of value, something to show off. I admit to being disappointed when I touch the fixed buffers on Bachmann's more recent releases, it feels cheaper, lower quality even if its operationally pointless.

  17. 7 hours ago, Half-full said:

Why?  Whats the point in opening doors?  What value to they add to the model?  Extra tooling and assembly costs, passed on to the consumer, for no added value.  Its a bad enough gimmick on loco's but at lease you'll see a loco in action with a door open, you dont see that with coaches.

It was a selling point of China super detailed models 25 years ago.

Proto 2000 series in the US took off in a big way. Early Hornby diesels tooled in China copied this (they might even be the same factory as the bogie assemblies are similar to the point I can use class 50 spares in Proto 2000 models).

Thing is they were tooled that way and remain so.

Removing posable vents, opening doors etc will make newer versions less feature rich than older versions, a selling point to some, and a barrier to a competing model being released, all which lengthens the roi of the tooling for a few extra pennies of assembly time.

tbh if someone tooled up a new 31/50 I doubt i’d upgrade for opposite reasons....

50’s ive already got every livery I need and I dont think a new tooling will cut it. So i’ll stick with Hornby at this point, they pull the house down, look good and have excellent detail that isnt going to be beaten at their current price.

: 31’s theres so few liveries released, the shape isnt best and their history with Mazak isnt good, so instead Ive upgraded my Lima fleet with cheap railroad class 66 wheels/drive systems and i’m all set.

That sharp “sssshhhhhhhpp” sound followed by the relief as the vac is destroyed was a trademark 1st gen DMU sound...

I did notice that the way drivers drove 1st gen DMUs changed when 142/150’s arrived, prior they seemed to gently pull from the station and ramp up revs on the move  (to the point of the exhaust rattling) prior each gear change and slowly build up speed.

But after the 142’s arrived, drivers seemed to rev them up high, start moving, then gear change at a higher speed at shorter intervals, much the same way as pacers/ sprinters go.

Would it be newspaper empties, rounded up from various locations and returning to Manchester for another 'paper round'?

Thanks for all the fantastic information.

I know Rule #1 applies anyway, but I may use the fuelling point as an excuse to run a 56 onto the layout from time to time.  I remember them being introduced on the Port Talbot-Llanwern ore trains. 56 036, the pioneer of the large logo livery, was my first 56. It also happened to be the photo in my 1979 Ian Allan Motive Power book. The double headed 56s were impressive, but the sight and sound of the triple headed 37s they replaced was like something out of a mad max film.

56’s were frequent through Manchester in the 1980’s.. Cawoods coal workings (Accurascale pfas) were at least 2-3 times a week.

whilst I always saw them via Miles Platting, theres little stopping them going turning right at Victoria...

dont forget Redbank stored the stock between duties for the club trains to Blackpool, Southport and Barrow... when that first started, anything at all could show up.. Railfreight 31,37,47,60...  it was only when it became a long term thing that 31/4 in Blue/Regional Railways, 31/5 Dutch, & 37/4 in Mainline/Regional Railways became solid performers...

hers a 47/3 on NSE stock in the early days...

as for parcels, that produced some surprises too...

Longsight provided the shunters... seen here at Victoria.

    oh and er.... these...

This was my trip back from redbank, with the 31 waiting whilst 44932 reverses back into victoria..

Two regulars at Victoria for banking, pilot duties were 31232 and 31242.. they were perpetually there.

fantastic theme for a layout, all the best and excited to see it develop.. a lot of great memories relating to Red Bank... I look to see it develop with interest !
