I'm hoping nothing comes of this moron on another forum and his complaint Jim, as someone who knows nothing of the 'big railway' I find this thread and your input a fantastic insight into the life of railway staff. I also think this thread shines a great light on Colas, and shows a positive proactive company in a way the public don't normally see.
Keep up the good work, and the great pics and information. 99.9% of us really do appreciate it.
Mark
Perfectly put Mark......well done.

Interesting hypothesis. While I have noted the condition of some of the "like new" items is anything but, other pre-owned items are in excellent condition and I have bought some of them - three out of production Farish locos and two tank wagons. One of the locos was offered at a hefty discount, the other two were offered at prices comparable to current eBay sales. The tank wagons were discounted a pound each compared to when they were new. All the items were in excellent shape when I received them.
And as an overseas custmer...I didn't pay VAT on any of it. Which makes Hatton's "like new" items a real bargain for me when compared to eBay. Not only does it mean the Hattons items are effectively discounted about 20% when compared to the same items offered on eBay, but Hatton's overseas p+p charges are also significantly lower than those charged by most eBay sellers. That, plus the fact when I deal with Hattons, I know who I'm buying from which is not usually the case with an eBay seller.
I don't know who Hattons is targetting with its "like new" service, but as far I am concerned, as an oversears customer I really like it.
Matt
My understanding is the dealers dont usually offer more than one third of the new price for second hand goods. If they then sell for two thirds the original new price....thats a 100% profit. better than Hornby can give dealers on new stuff. No wonder dealers are stocking more and more second hand.
My figures were supplied by a dealer with shop premises.....not made up by me.
Its risky enough I would have thought buying new by mail order when overseas........but to buy second hand....that scares me. Is there any come back if its not as new as you had expected.

Quite right, I think Wigginton is just north of Tamworth - whoops!
John.
Eggington Jnc was where the line went off to Derby Friargate, then that line latterly used as a test track.
-
Bob, thanks for this. Thinking backwards, I guess this explains why the few pictures that exist of the unique larger Clayton were taken on test around Wigginton, not far away.
John.
John......
Wigginton...??? Do you mean Eggington, which is close by.

Hi Bob,
I've driven through Hatton a few times in the last year or so, and wondered if it was the home of Clayton - thanks for the confirmation. As I'm sure you know, the locos carried quite a prominent plate on their cabsides advertising Clayton Equipment of Hatton - I have one kindly given to me over 40 years ago by the Polmadie shed foreman when they were awaiting scrap!
John.
Hi John,
Have a look at this thread I started a couple of years ago......I passed it in my car regularly, and thought I would take a few pics before it went.
In the sixties, I used to pass by on the train, when off on a spotting trip somewhere. There were usually one or two locos parked up outside as we went past.

Surely if he has said that openly on a Forum.....he would be instantly removed........that would happen on here I'm sure.

Hi Martin,
Its a nice little project replacing the motor........not quite a drop in fit, but with a bit of ingenuity it works ok.

Hi John,
My Clayton expired in a cloud of very acrid smoke a few years ago....motor burnt out.
replaced with a Mashima.....ran perfectly eversince.......as you say.....its a lovely little model of the prototype, and the Danes need commending for providing it for us.
The prototypes were built in a village called Hatton near Derby....only 10 miles from where I live in Uttoxeter.....hence I have a bit of a soft spot for them.
During the past 12 months or so, the Clayton factory was finally demolished.

I did think that Crewe might be a bit of a distant memory judging by your work pattern.
I shall look forward to popping in one evening this summer to watch the trains running.

Hi
just been looking at there site and looked at the pre-owned, bit strange that they are selling pre-owned Maunsell Corridor Composite for more than they are selling them new, even selling an LY tank for more than a new one! ,what that all about?.
I would like to know how they come up with these price for there pre-owned that cost more than a new one!.
I agree.......Hattons should be aware that this practice could end up giving them a bad name.

Jim,
Have any Colas locos pulled any Charter Tours at all....???
My pal was wondering, as he needs haulage behind 4 of the 5 class 60's that were towed to Toton last week.???
-
hi Jim,
Who owns the refuelling points..........and how does payment etc get done by the different companies........I assume you dont have to pay with credit card, or get green shield stamps etc.,
Bob.

Bachmann English Electric Type 4 and Sulzer Type 4 shunting
Lovely videos, and a nice bit of sound.
I notice that both locos tended to shoot off when then started.......have you adjusted any of the CV values on the sound decoders, or are they straight from the box so to speak.??
Perhaps a higher value for CV3 would smooth the acceleration.
Not being critical....just trying to help.
Were both locos bought with sound already fitted, or are they special projects..??

having now driven a few im quite impressed with them, very powerful machine, there are a few niggles though, they are over complicated in places, difficult to get comfortable while driving (ive still not worked out how to drop the seat yet!)
Perhaps you could ask Colas if they could retro fit you something more comfortable Jim..??

Where exactly are they being taken to for restoration.??
Which route did they take out of Stoke.............heading for the WCML or Derby direction..??

Here we go again......!!!!!!!
For what it's worth , I'll give my two pennoth again.
TCS and DCC Concepts decoders are, in my opinion, not as good as a Lenz Standard.
The TCS ones are not cheap either.
The DCC Concepts may well be cheaper, but perform similarly to the TCS.
My problem was running a train up and down my gradients, 1 in 80.
A train doing a scale 40/50 mph at the top of a hill would speed up to a scale 50/60 mph at the bottom. Looks ridiculous, going round a curve through a station at that point.
I operate alone generally, keeping 3 or 4 trains going at the same time. I can't DRIVE each one at the same time, so rely on the decoder.
The Lenz performs perfectly for the way I want to play trains, the other two are POOR in comparison, FOR THE WAY I WANT TO PLAY TRAINS.
But that is me...... Others find them acceptable......I don't.
That's why I fixed on the Lenz Standard decoder. And in the UK , a price of about £17 or £18 each is acceptable to me for a £100 loco.
If you want to save 4 or 5 pounds, buy the cheaper item.....!!!
However, ALL my TCS and DCC Concepts decoders have failed over the last three or four years........ everyone single one( over a dozen).
Never had a Lenz fail yet. So to me, buying cheap was false economy in the longer term....... But that is purely my own honest experience.

There's a pic already posted on wnxx newspages of a model Colas liveried 60. It looks pretty good. I believe it may have been done by one of our resident painters here on RMW(not me I hasten to add).
Cheers,
Mick
Cant we get a pic posted on here then, seeing as you know who our resident Rembrandts are....??

Today it finally happened!!
I was in Riverside yard, Exeter unloading some S&C timbers and 70 801 excelerated away heading in the Taunton direction with a long rake of Falcons.
I must admit to finding the whole experience fairly impressive! I was pleasantly surprised.
The loco was being throttled up to full power, the sound reminded me of a 60 and a 4REP in all in one.
Would have made a great video but it took me completely by surprise.
Yes.......I saw one accelerate away quite recently too....impressive to say the least.

I'm a fan of the smoke too. Many think it's too thin to be realistic, which is true, but I say no smoke is even less realistic! Besides you'd soon not be able to breath if it had prototypical volumes of smoke!
I just want the smoke........we'll just have to hold our breath.......they are really good vids, and as Biff says, the synchronised smoke is fantastic.

It is electronically scanned when it leaves the delivery office or individual postman on your doorstep.Your signature is not needed.
I only use the following......
1st or 2nd class Recorded Delivery......which is not tracked, but is signed for
or
Special Delivery, (next day before 1pm)......which IS tracked and signed for.
I'm struggling to find the service which is tracked but not signed for........?????
Can you tell me which service it is on the Post Office website....????
-
I recently came home to find a Royal Mail Tracked Delivery package in my porch that was for a different name and address than mine, so Tracked Delivery doesn't necessarily mean it went to the correct address.
Doesnt a tracked delivery have to be signed for.??

Living in the US I use Hattons BECAUSE they offer tracked shipping options. There's nothing more frustrating, to me, than placing an order for a couple hundred of dollars worth of loco's and then have the shipment dissapear into the ether.
About 5 years ago I placed an order with Hattons using Royal Mail Airmail and it never arrived, I called them and they redid the order no questions asked, but in all it took over 6 weeks to get the goods. Nowadays I use their DHL option and typically receive the orders within 2 business days with full tracking.
I recently ordered some stuff from another well respected Model shop in the UK. I placed the order at the beginning of December hoping to get the goods before Christmas, and they acutally arrived in under two weeks using their standard Royal Mail Airmail option, so far so good. BUT the loco I had ordered didn't run, so I sent it back to them mid January and used the US Postal Service Tracked option which cost an extortionate $50, the loco only costs $100!, but I didn't want to wait months to get the loco sorted. The loco arrived at the model shop within two days, they fiddled with it for a while and then replaced the chassis and returned it to me by standard airmail on February 18th, It's still not here and I have no way of figuring out when it arrive or whether its been lost.
For me, personally, I'd always rather have the peace of mind that tracked shipments give you, even if its 2-3 times the standard airmail price.
John P
Agreed.............tracked/recorded delivery is more expensive, and most people are reluctant to use it for that reason........UNTIL ONE GOES MISSING.

I appreciate your position Matt....buying from abroad, you have few options, and Hattons is certainly well up there.
I hope your dealings continue to be happy ones.
