  1. Totally OT which is the joy of such sites and its taken me this long to really understand how I was educated! Won't mention when I took the exam but it was during the Festival of Britain which was the first time I had seen a BR Standard, to bring this back to trains. Brian.
  2. In that case, Chris, many locations used bridges instead so I should have thought of that. Look forward to the finished Pencarrow! Brian.
  3. I always thought of him as a baby bear with a hat and a suitcase. Quite a crowd puller though! Brian
  4. Not to worry, Rick, mine haven't moved for ages. Brian.
  5. After looking at these pictures, no model station real or imagined, should be without a footbridge as they add so much to the overall effect. If there was none then see how much the real Buckfastleigh was improved with adding one to the overall scene. It certainly adds to Brent (the model). Brian.
  6. Before the eleven plus, it was called the Oxford School Certificate, although I don't know what Oxford contributed to it. Sounds classier though! Brian.
  7. In another case of Western independence there have been unconfirmed reports of stench pipes on the WR having copper caps. Brian.
  8. There's that odd platform again, the one that nobody really knows why its there. AFAIK, BFL ( does it have a code?) was never used as a passing loop, let alone for passenger use. The most common and logical explanation is that racehorses were loaded and unloaded for Buckfastleigh races in its prime. When the line was still extended to Ashburton, its only use seemed to be for storage except for the aforementioned races, nobody ran around at Buckfast then on a regular basis. Any other ideas? Brian.
  9. Phil, don't you have one of those extractor fans in the loft? Over here, we have whole house fans in the upstairs which empties hot air into the loft space which is vented to the outside so our lofts are not really suitable for train layouts, at least in Washington State. There's beams all over the place! Brian.
  10. Hi Cap'n, thanks for the views of Buckfastleigh. Seems forever since we were last there so I appreciate the pictures. Brian.
  11. Me too, ever since the French era which started my second incarnation of Meccano. Of course, those were the days when you could afford the postage; now its virtually prohibitive to obtain Meccano from the UK. Brian.
  12. Quite possibly its because they are so different they are attractive, to some anyway. But this happens to any loco; they are either loved or hated depending on the company or the designer and in this case as mentioned, they were right for their times which surely must give them extra points for their historical significance. Brian.
  13. I've only been to the DFR twice but through all these pictures and superb models, I know it quite well. Thanks. Brian.
  14. Ask Thomas, he's full acquainted with troublesome trucks who may be troubled. Brian.
  15. Now that the siding is a regular feature, all it needs now is a dilapidated wagon against the buffers. Brian.
  16. A picture is worth a thousand words so they say which is why pictures are appreciated. When I contribute pictures, they are all on the same layout albeit moved around a bit but we all like to see the trains as we know the words. Brian.
  17. I seem to remember many heavy shunts in the past, some with wagons that got away and also coupling up on passenger trains. Both young and old survived very well, most found it exciting and provided a topic of conversation for a few minutes perhaps with a nervous laugh. So it is to be expected that the same could happen in preservation. Brian.
  18. Hi Phil, glad that its over; now what can we talk about? Trains, jokes, JA; anything to get away from the cruel, cold world. At least our little worlds are happy places, little people are on safe streets, countryside looks like something Constable would love and the there is frequent train service. I should 1/76 myself! Brian.
  19. Definitely! As the ladies do when they need distraction - go shopping!! ATB Brian
