Hi Tim
I think Al must be thinking of your SWAG Taunton do last year when I was there with Fisherton Sarum, as I have not been to the Camrail shows yet.
-
Hi DesA
THank you for you kind comment.
I THink I know who you are...

5th of March - 45 years after the SDJR line closed - time for you to do that SDJR 7F in LMS livery you've always wanted
Hmm don't tempt me....so not being up on such things were they in unlined or lined black with LMS lettering for the post war war period?
Not that I think any ever ventured up from Templecombe as far as Salisbury!

Very neat Chris, I can already imagine the type of mechanics you have used. I look forward to taking a peak on Saturday.

Hi, I do not remove the boiler backhead or any fittings inside the cab I simply roll and fold a piece of kitchen towel or a use a piece of foam and stuff it in to the cab to mask the area from paint spray. Its simple, quick and seems to work for me.

Hi James
The question of the LMS branding on the WD tenders is very good one which I have tried to find an answer for myself.
The branding as such was inconsistant during the trials for example the stanier tenders with water scoops fitted to the Southern Bulleid pacifics when they went off Southern metals had British Railways in full Gill Sans on them and most locos in th trials were given their BR style number although Mallard retained its LNER number 22 whilst its tender sported British Railways. It seems like it was left down to the MPD concerned.
I am of the opinion thatthe whole set up of the trials was more of a poorly exceuted PR exercise rather than a mechanical comparison (for many reasons hich i discuss in my Hornby Mag article) as these inconsistancies highlight further.

Talking of heart-stopping moments Muz I dreaded turning round whenever I heard one of the empty cassettes at the end of the layout slide over!
We have to keep people on the stands next us awake somehow especially on the morning after the night before.....
-
Yes there was one heart stopping moment when a young lad being held in his father arms leaned forward and had a go at rotating my turntable by hand which didnt do the conection between the deck and and its drive shaft much good!

I had the privilege of meeting Julia and seeing this ground signal and the rest of the layout in the flesh so to speak last week.
I can only reiterate the comments above, the modelling is simply stunning, and great to be able to see it, albeit with the help of a magnifier, actually work! It is hard to tell from the picture, despite the rule, that this is 2mm modelling.
This is one layout that people will want to see again and again, such great attention to detail.

Does this mean you'll be bringing three layouts to Taunton next April ?
Well the fact that Fisherton Sarum completely fills the car (it was designed specifically to fit the whole layout in the back of my mundeo estate!) I don't think that would be an option besides I don't think the Captain would be too pleased if I did.
You of course are only saying that as with the speed at which you build layouts and their size I am sure you will have a third layout by next April!

I'm finding it hard to navigate the new site Graham!!
The Bulleid Light's look superb but as Horsetan says the cab casting is 'interesting'!!! Let me know if you run out of filler!!
Hi John
The finished model so you can see the result of my filling and painting can be found here You will like the pictures there as she has not been weathered yet!
Even with the small amount of filling involved the use of the SRG castings is still quicker and easier than my old method of making the replacement cabs from scratch in brass sheet.

Did you respray the whole loco Graham, because the colour match looks spot on.
Hi Jim
Yes I have been unable to find a good enough match for the Hornby factory finish (even the new Humbrol range does not match very well in my eyes) so I respray the whole loco and tender and line with prefix lining and number decals. Names plates are from Fox.
-
Hi. No they are not currently on the website.Drop Chris Knowles-Thomas an email his address is on the SRG site.
-
Badger, I am surprised at the 15mins comment but sorry if you saw the layout when it was not operating to its usual standard.
Down the cylinder drain pipes...adding them to Bulleid Pacifics

I did fix them to the front steps knowing that it fixes the chassis to the body however doing the exhibtion circuit with Fisherton Sarum I was finding that I was knocking off the front steps more often than I needed to get the body off. When I do I will carfully separate the front steps from the buffer as it is only a couple of small points of contact. I have fitted them to all 10 of my Light Pacifics now.
