  1. To be fair, the old school 'pocket rockets' actually still might work for my idea- it's inspired by 33c's NLR tank engine; just the earlier inside cylinder version.
  2. I will admit, I've always been intrigued by this set, ever since I first discovered it; and I also do have hopes that they'll 'de-mob' the F5 and make a regular version of the body shell.
  3. Speaking of which, when did Hornby gear down their "Pocket Rockets"? I'll want that for nabbing a model or two.
  4. A bit off-topic, but I had one of those J39 models; I could never work out where the tender drawbar was supposed to go- was it under the back of the loco chassis, or through the slot under the cab?
  5. I find myself honestly intrigued, amazed, and impressed by everyone's work here; and indeed, I fancy a go myself. But first, does anyone know where I could go to find line drawings, preferably 00 scale? I fancy taking a bash at something like the NLR 4-4-0T's, similar to what @33C did; albeit with the earlier inside cylinder versions.
  6. Oddly enough, in my case, it's something I saw at a swapmeet this past weekend; a boxed tender-drive Hornby model of A3 "Cameronian" in LNER Apple Green, going for $80 NZ; looked in pretty good condition too.
  7. I'm aware of those; but I was thinking something a bit more extravagant than just an old four-planker; no, I was thinking like an actual proper tender for carrying coal and water.
  8. I was just curious mainly, as I've decided to have a crack at doing a 'light railway oddity'; taking a page out of the Ffestiniog Railway, and kitbashing a tank engine to also have a tender.

  10. Well, 'The Unlucky Tug' on YT used an ex-GCR J11 from Bachmann as his model- it did mean he needed to do a lot of cutting through the dicast, though.
  11. Another JAFFA and OO-gauge LNER enthusiast here, with nowhere to operate or store his grab-bag collection of models, and no means to travel to events unassisted.
  12. Okay then; I was planning something similar for my Woolworth, but with an LNER cab.... I actually have a spare of a 3D printed J21 bodyshell that I got a while ago, now that I think about it... Incidentally, I ended up changing plans and getting a second Woolly for my hack.
  13. Hey, Corbs? Just asking for reference purposes, but it looks like the "Woolworths" have quite a short cab, right? How did you attach the Stanier cab on the frames? Did you just hack the whole Maunsell cab off, frames and all? And connected to that, how did you go about bodging the new connection between loco and tender?
  14. Well, it arrived today, so now comes the hard bit; trying to find when the next swapmeet is in my area, to get a scrap bodyshell for parts.
  15. It was listed as 'split chassis' at Hattons; and unlike Hornby, Bachmann doesn't exactly make it easy to look through their back catalogues- esp given it's listed as a model from 1998.

  17. Bringing my thoughts here so as to stop cluttering up other threads. I do have some ideas that could be both nice to see and useful in plugging the gaps in the LNER locomotive rosters; if we stick to the GER theme, the Holden T26 'Intermediates', aka the LNER E4 2-4-0's would be nice filler, to both the 'branchline' scenes, and also the pre-Grouping set; while the other one plugs one of the big holes- the 'North-East deficit; that being the paucity of RTR locomotives from the North Eastern Railway and the other constituent railways from further north. Specifically I refer to Sir Vincent Raven's S3-class mixed traffic 4-6-0's; otherwise better known as the LNER B16's; mainly the B16/1's, as they had the longest run, but from what I've seen in pictures, the Gresley rebuilt B16/2's and the Thompson rebuilt B16/3's are almost identical to each other, so that would save a bit on retooling.

Personally speaking, there's one loco that would get me reaching for the wallet, no questions asked at announcement; one that would fill a particularly noticeable gap in the LNER line up- that being the ex-NER S3-class mixed-traffic 4-6-0's designed by Sir Vincent Raven, otherwise known as the LNER B16's. The B16/1's in particular would have the widest range of use, from NER up to BR Late Crest.

Thanks; I'm currently planning ahead, to find out the bits I'll need; obviously a replacement for the smokebox door is one- but I'm not sure what would be an apt replacement, or if the door on one of those old Bachmann loco's is even a separate piece. Also, in my head I'm thinking that at some point after being built, during one of its' overhauls it had the Maunsell cab replaced by an LNER Group Standard cab, for better weather protection.

Fair enough; the idea I was playing with was that my planned layout, located in a fictitious market town on the North Norfolk coast (possibly somewhere near Hunstanton), connects to a light railway called the Jarlshaven 'Light' Tramway (the 'Jolt'); due to long-standing agreements that the owners of the line made, first with the Eastern Counties Railway, then the GER, and later still the LNER, the 'Jolt' has maintained running rights all the way to King's Lynn- they were rarely used in the past, but in WWI and afterwards, the increase of traffic on the 'Jolt' meant that they needed to make use of those running rights, and for that, a 'big engine' was needed. In the event, a kit of a "Woolwich N" was purchased in 1920, and once it was constructed, it became the aforementioned 'Big Engine' for the 'Jolt'.

I've just put an order through to Hattons for a second-hand Bachmann 'split-chassis' ex-SECR N-class, as part of a kitbashing project I fancy taking on, styled after @Corbs "Sudrian Histories" locos. My idea is that one of the post-war 'Woolwich' kit engines was purchased by a 'light railway' somewhere in East Anglia (in the style of Colonel Stephens' empire), and ends up getting various detail differences (new paintjob at minimum, maybe a new smokebox door or cab) to distinguish it from the rest of the N's. I'm just seeing if there's any advice that anyone is willing to share about the feasibility?
  22. This might seem an odd idea, but how big would a 'light' railway have to be, theoretically speaking, to require something bigger than a smallish tank engine? I was asking as I was watching one of @Corbs videos about his 'plausible reboot' of the Island of Sodor, and he mentioned the 'Woolwich' N-class Moguls, and how many of the kits were sold off far and wide.
  23. Really, there were GE variants? Well then, that would be useful- my planned layout is technically ex-GER metals.
  24. Probably, yeah; on the whole, both models have their good points, but I'm not sure how far either might have theoretically been able to wander around the LNER from NER metals.
  25. Hey there, @tmc; I'm tempted to get one of your LNER liveried models for my layout, but I cannot decide for the life of me which one to get.
