  1. I imagine most parts of the old Empire had a lot of British (designed if not built) equipment. I guess it's just a matter of exposure. Don't know how bothered I'd have been if I hadn't had a weekly magazine telling me about steam trains wheezing across Patagonia and modern Scandinavian electrics (as well as a healthy diet of UK trains). At least as worthy of attention as British Rail was.
  2. So here it is, according to the "World of Trains" part set that I spent my pocket money on in the early-mid 90s, this is the design which came second (sort of) to the eventually chosen class 60. I like it more than what they did build, though I like that too... "World of Trains" was money well spent, as well - it's what made me realise that there's an awful lot of interesting railway beyond the shores of the British isles; South America and Africa in particularly have some fantastic systems (I love me a Kenyan Garrett)
  3. Looks a bit nine elms to me. Though I've only ever seen a plan.
  4. Well I ordered the RS11. Christmas present to myself 2016 by the looks of it... Xmas 2015 will probably be some DCC kit then...
  5. Apparently that style front end came second in the BR class 60 styling competition. I do like how 60s look (and just 60s generally) but I think I'd like them more if they looked like that.
  6. I love those shark-nose electrics. Characteristically French (well, French speaking, since I'm sure I've seen them on SNCB as well), which made them so much more exotic than yet another 47...
  7. Thanks guys. Those magnetic set squares look highly useful.
  8. I was pretty careful in cutting those bits off, and they do go together when I push them, it's just making them stay like that that's the problem. But thanks for the response
  9. Sadly the layout is currently stored under my bed (house move stuff), which kind of stalled things for a bit. Since seeing Tilley Yard at Aldershot I've picked up a bit of mojo, so I've been building the Walthers cornerstone commissary building kit. This is what I've built so far. Looks OK from across the room. Terrified about painting it. Close up, this happens to me all the time with these plastic kits. Anyone know why/ what I'm doing wrong? Also debating ordering the Atlas RS11...
  10. I can't imagine a modern train would be specified without SDO. Crossrail ones will have the through gangway thing as well, and if its on the circle line...
  11. My experience on VIA rail was rather like that...I think we'd be in a better place if the TfL model was used nationwide.
  12. Wasn't that essentially John Major's idea of what should happen? Might work on HS2 should that ever happen, but that conventional network is a different question.
  13. In 6 feet you'd do well to get that in n gauge. ISL for industrial switching layout is a fine abbreviation as far as I'm concerned.
  14. I'm currently ruining the commissary building low relief thing. It looks ok from across the room, even only part built and badly at that... But this isn't my thread
  15. Farnham/ Aldershot was a good show. I even enjoyed watching some P4 (though there were rather too many N gauge tailchasers)... And I have to say that this layout has proved disproportionately inspiring to me, as I've been getting in a right mess with a cornerstone kit since that (even though the layout is still under the bed). Was good to put a face to a name, too.
  16. I like the first one. Agree with Gordon that there's too much track on the second. I also doubt that you'd see multiple double slips very often in reality.
  17. It's a bit too uniformly green, like a Dubai golf course. Try mixing in some yellower bits...
  18. I bought my train set so I can play with it. I couldn't care less what it's monetary value is as I have no intention of selling it, at least in the short term.
  19. Like the bus station at Hull...Will look quite good, just remember that the supports on the road side would have originally been on the removed platform. Did the other platforms have a roof originally as well? Wartime bombing damage maybe?
  20. I'll have to try to get to ally pally next year by the look of things.
  21. Agreed. Particularly if you're going for accuracy. I've seen some beautiful P4 layouts, full of incredible detailing, operated interestingly, and the illusion ruined by every single train SPAD-ing every signal. Maybe I'm in a minority being bothered by that though...
  22. I'd suggest swapping the fuel point and tank around, so the fuel could be delivered by road or rail, and the the filler pump thing could be accessed from both tracks.
  23. Looking forward to seeing it, being a frequent traveller on the Bournemouth to Birmingham XC route I see the yard a lot.
  24. Only you can determine what you want to do ultimately. You can probably be sufficiently generic with the scenery (with some care) that you can run trains from today and the sectorisation era without either looking out of place, so it really boils down to rolling stock. And who doesn't like an excuse to buy/build trains? So that's what I'd do.
  25. I think your setup without the goods shed looks better of the two. I'm impressed with your approach to just having a go at stuff. Keep at it.
