  1. Except the things which are preventing such a service being run today with diesel traction - pathing, rolling stock availability and demand...
  2. Hydraulics do have a deeper floodwater threshold than locos with electric motors. Though I'm not sure if be volunteering to see if I could get through...
  3. Looks pretty good with the black cutting faces to me.Maybe not all that Cornish, though.
  4. At Reading right now platform 3 track is higher than 2. Also seen on some of the through platforms, and those all arrive on the same alignment.
  5. ...And only work properly once you've set fire to them?
  6. There's no reason to think (from that image alone) that what they were up to has anything to do with electrification. Could have been, of course, but there's loads of other stuff that they could have been doing.
  7. I agree. What I meant by that was that a classic puzzle is pretty much guaranteed to have interesting, if not strictly authentic operations. I valued having the certainty of having a defined game to play. When I do the next one I'll have a different set of requirements, I imagine.
  8. A classic shunting puzzle (inglenook/ timesaver) is a good choice for someone like myself who is very inexperienced, as it avoids building a layout where operations will be pointless and boring. A downside is that I have collected things like "a blue boxcar" and "an ACL boxcar". They can still be proper model railways though. Just don't look at my layout thread for proof That's more than enough hijacking of the thread from me now...
  9. For me, I have 4' 6" x 1' for my layout. I have chosen to use that for a 3-2-2 inglenook, which wouldn't work with longer cars than 40'. And so my criteria for selecting vehicles was "40' for under a tenner", and my cars are mostly 'very well suited to weathering practise' It's just one way to skin that particular squirrel, if you don't want a classic shunting puzzle then you can do a lot of different things in a tiny space.
  10. *raises hand*40 foot cars are what you need for small shunting puzzles. I'm not embarrassed by my post Rio Grande merger GP60 pushing them around.
  11. I don't know about peco, but the Hornby curved points link 2nd and 3rd radius, so you could get a crossover into a 90deg curve. Some people will tell you they're not the most reliable thing in the world; I have no personal experience, but that would save some space on the straights.
  12. Thanks guys, plenty of induction noise going on there, at least on my phone speaker.
  13. Does anyone have a suggestion for a GP60? I'm totally green on dcc (and most other things), so just what to look for would do as a start...
  14. Based on the evidence we've seen here, of course it doesn't seem likely that there will be a conviction. Most people would be acquitted if the jury only listened to the case for the defense. Once the prosecution has had their say and the witnesses have been cross examined the picture will look very different. Maybe the accused will be proven innocent, maybe not, but we are in no position to suggest that this is a ridiculous prosecution on this forum.
  15. I don't know the facts, but if the rmt and merseyrail are both standing behind the chap, you'd have to assume the CPS think they have quite a strong case. I guess the legal process will play out. We certainly can't judge here based solely on the case for the defense, which is what we've got right now.
  16. I think you'll need a more independent source than the rmt to understand what's actually going on. Not that I'm anti union, but their job is to stand behind their members rather than present a balanced report...
  17. So if you're into goods only and shunting, why include a station? Don't take that the wrong way, it's just if it's not your area of interest, use the space and resources for something you are into. Can still send passenger trains through if you like, they just won't have to stop (You could actually run longer trains if not constrained by platform length). Anyway, my point remains make sure you build whatever it is that you want, not what convention dictates you should.
  18. I'm not sure where you are with this, but before spending loads more money, go to some shows, read loads of threads on here and work out what it is that you want from a layout. Do you enjoy watching trains circulate? Do you like shunting? Do you get more pleasure from finding the tiny details that people put in? Also, how much time do you have to put into it? How much money? Are you a skilled scratchbuilder or are you like me and struggle to build a box from a kit? Make sure your eventual design is something that you have the capability of building, our you'll get overwhelmed and end up with a shed full of dissatisfaction. Maybe you've already done that, but once you've worked out what you want from your layout, then it's time to decide which tracks go where. To my eyes, your plan looks very ambitious got someone who hasn't been involved with the hobby for 45 years. Other opinions are available. I'm only newly retuned myself...
  19. Take HST power cars and replace them with EMD E or F units...
  20. Love it. There's not enough of this kind of thing out there, hope to see it in person sometime.
  21. Not sure about the tunnel on the right, but otherwise that's the layout I wanted as a kid.
  22. From what i know, you wouldn't usually have a return conductor in an autotransformer system, those are particular to booster transformers. You could have an earth wire and an auxiliary feeder though, i believe.
