  1. That's not what the NRM says - they say at least the rear two thirds of Scotsman's frames are original (i.e. from 1923).
  2. Yes, it was still at Glasgow in 1969, but when was the last time it was fired up and used to heat carriages? I presume a fair bit before its sale to the KWVR...
  3. 3rd of August was last scheduled steam-hauled passenger train. There was some shunting etc. carried out by steam on the 4th & 5th, as well as a couple of enthusiast specials. But from a brief look over it does genuinely seem that the few remaining survivors didn't turn a wheel between the 6th and the 10th. On a side note, does anyone know if any of the steam locos used as carriage heating boilers were still being used for that purpose by August? I know the B1s weren't, but they weren't the only ones.
  4. BR initally rejected adoption of the LNER system across the entire network on the grounds of cost, but changed their minds after 17 people were killed in the 1955 Sutton Coldfield accident, where a diverted express train derailed while doing 60mph in a 30mph zone. The Recommendations section of the accident report provides a good insight into the thinking at the time:
  5. A search of the index turns up some articles on Manning Wardle and Bagnall, but there's no indication that they deal with the cabs.
  6. I am looking for photographs of the cabs of locos built by the following manufacturers in the following time periods: Manning Wardle locos built circa 1880s W G Bagnall locos built circa 1890s Kitson & Co locos built circa 1870s-1890s
  7. Frankly in America you're lucky to have half barriers. Or lights.
  8. I am personally of the opinion that providing sources is always something to be encouraged, regardless of someone's credibility. It helps prevent things like honest mistakes. This is not a comment on whether or not one person is more credible than the other.
  9. Hornby have tried that sort of thing in the past - I remember there was a Thomas the Tank Engine series when Royal Mail did some commemorative stamps that came with an engine and their respective stamp.
  10. A lot of doom and gloom in this thread. What am I wondering is whether or not there has been a survey of volunteers in steam loco-related roles, their ages, and their motivations for volunteering.
  11. It may also be worth looking into 15mm scale wargaming stuff - this is often quoted as 1:100, but wargaming scales are very fuzzy things and there must be plenty of stuff that's appropriate for 1:120. As a general rule, you can get away with a lot as long as it lacks stuff that is scaled around the human body like doors.
  12. Well - right for the mindset he was working from - i.e. the all-too-common at the time one of "the railway must make a profit". Once the country actually saw what a network built to be profitable would look like in the form of The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes they baulked, and by the time the 70s dawned the idea that the railway would always require some subsidy had become much more common. We don't have the railway Beeching wanted, and thank God for that! But the problem was not Beeching the man, but the failure to answer the question of "what is the point of the railways, and what was the point of nationalising them?".
  13. Do you have any actual evidence that the railways that offer such experiences have not assessed the risk of them?
  14. A somewhat related thought I had a day ago; until very recently there were enthusiasts who travelled the world chasing the last remaining steam locomotives in regular non-heritage service - in a few decades' time will we see the same for diesels?
  15. That is a matter of personal taste. I would hesitate to make sweeping statements about the maximum degree of compression permitted.
  16. Or you could run 1 x 4-car units. It's not like loco-hauled stock tends to be full length in model form anyway...
  17. This post leaves out the Beatles-themed wagons announced for this year, including a truly hideous White Album one. Avert your eyes...
  18. This is an interesting idea, but it seems there is no physical controller and it has to be done through an app. I do not trust Hornby not to drop the system after a few years.
  19. Seeing as it's being sold in a pack with L&M coaches, and IIRC there are no preserved L&B locos...
  20. Or it's Playtrains-related.
  21. Something that I don't think's been mentioned, but that I think is definitely worth mentioning and probably explains a lot of stuff about the Fell reviews, is that if you're an actual reviewer - that is, someone who buys or is given models for the primary purpose of reviewing them - as opposed to someone who reviews items bought for other reasons you're probably going to be in a situation where you have to review a model of something that's outside your area of expertise. Something like performance is easy enough to determine, but an inaccuracy is something you'll only know if you know the prototype. Obviously this can be mitigated somewhat if you're a magazine with multiple reviewers, but you're unlikely to have an expert in everything. And of course, if you're familiar with the prototype you're probably going to have a more negative view of any inaccuracies on the model.
